Decent Peoples, Political Legitimacy, and Informed Consent

In The Law of Peoples, John Rawls attempts to work out principles of justice for the foreign policy of a reasonably just liberal people. One of his primary goals is to establish the minimum requirements necessary for a people to be an equal member (or a \u27members in good standing\u27) within a Society of Peoples (SoP). While Rawls believes that all well-ordered liberal peoples meet these requirements, he also believes that there are non-liberal peoples that are capable of doing so as well. He thus imagines the possibility of a non-liberal, well-ordered people. He calls such peoples Decent Hierarchical Societies (DHS). For Rawls, then, a fully just SoP need not constituted exclusively by liberal peoples. In this paper I argue against the inclusion of DHSs within the SoP on social epistemic grounds. More specifically, I argue that because DHSs do not secure for their members certain liberal rights--namely, the freedom of speech (and, consequently, freedom of the press)--such members will not have available to them the necessary means to give their legitimate (or free) support. This will result in DHSs violating a necessary condition of \u27well-orderedness,\u27 namely, that members freely support the basic institutions of their society, or what I call the political legitimacy condition. As such, DHSs should not be regarded as members in good standing within the SoP

Dinamika socialistiÄŤnega oblikovanja nacij: Kratkotrajni program promocije jugoslovanske nacionalne identitete in nekateri primerjalni vidiki

Adopting a historical perspective, the article discusses the politics of nation building in Socialist Yugoslavia and the dialectics between Yugoslav national identity and national identities developed in the Federation’s constitutive republics.

Risk averse asymptotics in a Black-Scholes market on a finite time horizon

We consider the optimal investment and consumption problem in a Black-Scholes market, if the target functional is given by expected discounted utility of consumption plus expected discounted utility of terminal wealth. We investigate the behaviour of the optimal strategies, if the relative risk aversion tends to infinity. It turns out that the limiting strategies are: do not invest at all in the stock market and keep the rate of consumption constant

Embedding in Brownian motion with drift and the Azéma–Yor construction

    Get PDF
AbstractWe consider the embedding of a probability distribution in Brownian motion with drift. We first give a sufficient condition on the target measure, under which a variant of the Azéma–Yor (1979a, Séminaire de Probabilités XIII, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 721, Springer, Berlin, pp. 90–115) construction for this problem works. A necessary and sufficient condition for embeddability by means of some stopping time, not necessarily finite, is also provided. This latter condition is then analyzed in some detail

    Making Remote Learning Engaging

    Get PDF
This article provides extant background on online learning including best practice frameworks at multiple educational levels. The authors also discuss important considerations of remote and online learning when one is planning or teaching in that modality. Perhaps most importantly, this piece details the account of one highly qualified teacher’s experience transitioning to remote learning during the spring of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can serve as an exemplar to others. This example will demonstrate how teachers can be effective when mandated to utilize remote or hybrid teaching. The piece will also share implications for the future of teaching and teacher preparation

Kompetenzen und Aufgabenbereiche von Advanced Practice Nurses auf der Notfallstation : ein Internationaler Literaturreview

    Get PDF

Kosovo in the 1980s – Yugoslav Perspectives and Interpretations

    Get PDF
The introductory article in this issue argues for greater consideration of the impact of the Kosovo crisis on political developments in other Yugoslav republics and on the entire federal state structure of Yugoslavia after Tito’s death. It also calls for a closer examination of alternative paths that were considered by various actors to resolve the conflict but were not or could not be pursued. Such a discussion of developments in Kosovo in the 1980s in a broader Yugoslav perspective would, it is argued, also have the potential to contribute to a more complex understanding of the Kosovo crisis itself.Peer Reviewe

Renormalization Group Flow in a General Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
The renormalization group flow in a general renormalizable gauge theory with a simple gauge group in 3+1 dimensions is analyzed. The flow of the ratios of the Yukawa couplings and the gauge coupling is described in terms of a bounded potential, which makes it possible to draw a number of non-trivial conclusions concerning the asymptotic structure of the theory. A classification of possible flow patterns is given.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, ITP--UH--10/9
