    Environmental effects on galaxy evolution. II: quantifying the tidal features in NIR-images of the cluster Abell 85

    This work is part of a series of papers devoted to investigate the evolution of cluster galaxies during their infall. In the present article we imaged in NIR a selected sample of galaxies through- out the massive cluster Abell 85 (z = 0.055). We obtained (JHK) photometry for 68 objects, reaching 1 mag/arcsec^2 deeper than 2MASS. We use these images to unveil asymmetries in the outskirts of a sample of bright galaxies and develop a new asymmetry index, alpha_An, which allows to quantify the degree of disruption by the relative area occupied by the tidal features on the plane of the sky. We measure the asymmetries for a subsample of 41 large area objects finding clear asymmetries in ten galaxies, most of them being in groups and pairs projected at different clustercentric distances, some of them located beyond R500 . Combining information on the Hi-gas content of blue galaxies and the distribution of sub-structures across Abell 85, with the present NIR asymmetry analysis, we obtain a very powerful tool to confirm that tidal mechanisms are indeed present and are currently affecting a fraction of galaxies in Abell 85. However, when comparing our deep NIR images with UV-blue images of two very disrupted (jellyfish) galaxies in this cluster, we discard the presence of tidal 1 interactions down to our detection limit. Our results suggest that ram-pressure stripping is at the origin of such spectacular disruptions. We conclude that across a complex cluster like Abell 85, environment mechanisms, both gravitational and hydrodynamical, are playing an active role in driving galaxy evolution.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for Publication in A

    A model of maxilla resection to test new hybrid implants:macroporous titanium and tissue engineering elements

    Maxillary bone loss in commonly found in humans, due to bone ageing, tooth loos, periodontal disease and, more severely, to trauma, radiotherapy and tumor resection. Masillofacial reconstructive surgery is a still unmet clinical demand, available therapies include grafting of autologous or heterologous bone tissue and/or the implantation of metallic plates, buy these treatments are still unable to resume form and function. The emrgence of 3D-printing technology applied to metal alloys now allows the manufacturing of customized, patient-tailored prosthetic implants. However, poor bone quiality at the implant site due to ageing or disease still hamper proper osseointegration. By combining Electron Beam Melting metal sintering and tissue engineering, we are developing hybrid maxillofacial implants, wher a metal framework of Ti6Al4V alloy confers both and appropiaate shape and mechanical stabilty, while stem cells and osteogenic molecules stimulate bone growth into the metal framework, thus pormoting osseointegration.     Astrophysical science with a spaceborne photometric telescope

    The FRESIP Project (FRequency of Earth-Sized Inner Planets) is currently under study at NASA Ames Research Center. The goal of FRESIP is the measurement of the frequency of Earth-sized extra-solar planets in inner orbits via the photometric signature of a transit event. This will be accomplished with a spaceborne telescope/photometer capable of photometric precision of two parts in 100,000 at a magnitude of m(sub v) = 12.5. To achieve the maximum scientific value from the FRESIP mission, an astrophysical science workshop was held at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, November 11-12, 1993. Workshop participants were invited as experts in their field of astrophysical research and discussed the astrophysical science that can be achieved within the context of the FRESIP mission

    Adopting AI-Enabled Technology: Taking the Bad with the Good

    From autonomous vehicles to smart home assistants and telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI) enabled technologies are increasingly available in the market. Consumers are saddled between the benefits and the risks of these new technologies, yet research has seldom accounted for both facilitators and inhibitors of AI-enabled technology adoption. We introduce a theoretical model that includes both facilitators and inhibitors of AI-enabled technologies, which we test using structural equation modeling with a cross sectional survey of U.S. consumers across three AI categories: autonomous vehicles for robotic AI, smart home assistants for virtual AI, and telemedicine for embedded AI. We also include in the model the role of brand trust. We find that perceived uncertainty, loss of control, and privacy risk inhibit intention to use AI-enabled technologies by reducing perceptions of convenience, customization, and efficiency, so facilitators mediate the relationship between inhibitors and intention to use. We also find that brand trust contributes to intention to use by positively affecting facilitators and negatively affecting inhibitors. Finally, we ran the classic Technology Acceptance Model and found that our proposed model is a better fit to predict intention to use AI-enabled technologies

    Resting and Post-Exercise Blood Pressure Response to Repeated Bouts of Aquatic Treadmill Exercise

    Aerobic exercise is known to reduce resting blood pressure as well as induce and acute post-exercise hypotensive response. Purpose: Determine the effect of repeated bouts of aquatic treadmill exercise on consecutive days in physically untrained, pre-hypertensive men. Methods: Nine male subjects (SBP: 132 ± 8 mmHg; DBP: 79 ± 8 mmHG; 33 ± 8 years; 183 ± 7 cm; 103 ± 31 kg; 32 ± 10% Fat; 36 ± 7 ml·kg-1·min-1) participated in the study. All subjects completed an acute aquatic treadmill exercise session (60% VO2max; 300 kcal) on two consecutive days. Prior to each exercise session and following 10 minutes of seated rest, blood pressure and heart rate were automatically taken every 3 minutes for a total of 3 measurements. Following each exercise session, blood pressure and heart rate were measured automatically every 10-minutes from 20 to 60 minutes post while subjects were seated at rest. Pre-exercise and post-exercise measures were averaged. A dependent sample t-test was performed to compare the average values between the first (ATM1) and second (ATM2) exercise sessions. Results: Data are displayed in table below. Both pre-exercise and post-exercise systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures were lower for ATM2. Conclusion: A single bout of ATM exercise resulted in reduced resting blood pressure 24-hours later. Furthermore, post-exercise blood pressure was lower following a second ATM exercise session. These data support both the efficacy of ATM exercise in regulating blood pressure and the cumulative benefit of repeated exercise bouts.     The Role of Social and Technological Predispositions in Participation in the Sharing Economy

    This study contributes to the growing body of research on drivers of participation in the sharing economy. We extend the well-established technology acceptance model and include layers of personality architecture related to the social nature of these markets (extraversion) and their technology intermediation (technology proclivity). Findings from a cross-sectional survey (n = 292) show that extraversion is related directly to the intention to use sharing economy applications, such as in home gig services, and related indirectly to likelihood to use these technologies and to engage as a provider of such services, through technology proclivity and the technology’s perceived usefulness

    Ante la relativamente nueva introducción de la denominada mediación intercultural en el escenario del trabajo con la inmigración extranjera en España, se han multiplicado los debates y posiciones sobre la figura profesional que ha de ejercer tal actividad de mediación intercultural. Para contribuir a dichos debates aportamos el resumen de los resultados de un estudio que pretende delimitar el perfil del llamado "mediador o mediadora intercultural". El estudio ha consistido básicamente en hacer un recorrido por tres fuentes de información fundamentales: la formación que se ha proporcionado a mediadores y mediadoras interculturales en diferentes contextos europeos, las características y competencias que se les han atribuido y, por último, las funciones que se dice debe cumplir la mediación. Estos tres ámbitos de información deben dar respuesta adecuada al perfil del mediador o mediadora intercultural, destacando en especial su delimitación profesional, las proximidades y relaciones con otras profesiones y, en especial, el tipo de formación necesario para la capacitación profesional.In the face of the relatively new introduction of the named intercultural mediation in the context of work with foreign immigration in Spain, debates and positions on the professional figure that intercultural mediation has to be wielded have multiplied. In order to contribute to such debates, we provide the summary of the results of a study that aims to delimit the profile of the so called ‘’intercultural mediator’’. The study basically consisted of taking a tour for three fundamental sources of information: The training provided to intercultural mediators in different European contexts, the characteristics and competences attributed to them, and lastly, the functions that are said to be fulfilled by the mediator. These three aspects of information must give an adequate answer to the ’intercultural mediator’ profile, highlighting his professional delimitations, the proximities and relations with other professions, and especially, the type of training required for the vocational training
