Two-photon exchange measurements with positrons and electrons
Two-photon exchange contributions have potentially broad ranging impact on
several charged lepton scattering measurements. Previously believed to be
extremely small, based in part on comparisons of positron scattering and
electron scattering in the 1950s and 1960s, recent data suggest that the
corrections may be larger than expected, in particular in kinematic regions
that were inaccessible in these early positron scattering measurements.
Additional measurements using positron beams at Jefferson Lab would allow for a
detailed investigation of these contributions in a range of reactions and

Spin-to-Orbital Angular Momentum Conversion and Spin-Polarization Filtering in Electron Beams
We propose the design of a space-variant Wien filter for electron beams that
induces a spin half-turn and converts the corresponding spin angular momentum
variation into orbital angular momentum of the beam itself by exploiting a
geometrical phase arising in the spin manipulation. When applied to a spatially
coherent input spin-polarized electron beam, such a device can generate an
electron vortex beam, carrying orbital angular momentum. When applied to an
unpolarized input beam, the proposed device, in combination with a suitable
diffraction element, can act as a very effective spin-polarization filter. The
same approach can also be applied to neutron or atom beams.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

New measurement of charge asymmetry from HERA
After presenting the recent measurements of neutral current cross section in
DIS at HERA, we explain the effect of the interference at the
electro-weak scale, visible on these data. Then, the beam charge difference
is measured and the interference itself is extracted. Results are

Feasibility and tolerability of whole-body, low-intensity vibration and its effects on muscle function and bone in patients with dystrophinopathies: a pilot study.
IntroductionDystrophinopathies are X-linked muscle degenerative disorders that result in progressive muscle weakness complicated by bone loss. This study's goal was to evaluate feasibility and tolerability of whole-body, low-intensity vibration (WBLIV) and its potential effects on muscle and bone in patients with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy.MethodsThis 12-month pilot study included 5 patients (age 5.9-21.7 years) who used a low-intensity Marodyne LivMD plate vibrating at 30-90 Hz for 10 min/day for the first 6 months. Timed motor function tests, myometry, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography were performed at baseline and at 6 and 12 months.ResultsMotor function and lower extremity muscle strength remained either unchanged or improved during the intervention phase, followed by deterioration after WBLIV discontinuation. Indices of bone density and geometry remained stable in the tibia.ConclusionsWBLIV was well tolerated and appeared to have a stabilizing effect on lower extremity muscle function and bone measures. Field Emission Dark Current of Technical Metallic Electrodes
In the framework of the Low Emittance Gun (LEG) project, high gradient
acceleration of a low emittance electron beam will be necessary. In order to
achieve this acceleration a -500 kV, 250 ns FWHM, pulse will be applied in
between two electrodes. Those electrodes should sustain the pulsed field
without arcing, must not outgass and must not emit electrons. Ion back
bombardment, and dark current will be damageable to the electron source as well
as for the low emittance beam. Electrodes of commercially available OFE copper,
aluminium, stainless steel, titanium and molybdenum were tested following

Optimal investment and location decisions of a firm in a flood risk area using impulse control theory
Flooding events can affect businesses close to rivers, lakes or coasts. This paper provides an economic partial equilibrium model, which helps to understand the optimal location choice for a firm in flood risk areas and its investment strategies. How often, when and how much are firms willing to invest in flood risk protection measures? We apply Impulse Control Theory and develop a continuation algorithm to solve the model numerically. We find that, the higher the flood risk and the more the firm values the future, i.e. the more sustainable the firm plans, the more the firm will invest in flood defense. Investments in productive capital follow a similar path. Hence, planning in a sustainable way leads to economic growth. Sociohydrological feedbacks are crucial for the location choice of the firm, whereas different economic settings have an impact on investment strategies. If flood defense is already present, e.g. built up by the government, firms move closer to the water and invest less in flood defense, which allows firms to generate higher expected profits. Firms with a large initial productive capital surprisingly try not to keep their market advantage, but rather reduce flood risk by reducing exposed productive capital

A low-voltage retarding-field Mott polarimeter for photocathode characterization
Nuclear physics experiments at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator
Facility's CEBAF rely on high polarization electron beams. We describe a
recently commissioned system for prequalifying and studying photocathodes for
CEBAF with a load-locked, low-voltage polarized electron source coupled to a
compact retarding-field Mott polarimeter. The polarimeter uses simplified
electrode structures and operates from 5 to 30 kV. The effective Sherman
function for this device has been calibrated by comparison with the CEBAF 5 MeV
Mott polarimeter. For elastic scattering from a thick gold target at 20 keV,
the effective Sherman function is 0.201(5). Its maximum efficiency at 20 keV,
defined as the detected count rate divided by the incident particle current, is
5.4(2) x 10-4, yielding a figure-of-merit, or analyzing power squared times
efficiency, of 1.0(1) x 10-5. The operating parameters of this new polarimeter
design are compared to previously published data for other compact Mott
polarimeters of the retarding-field type.Comment: 9 figure
Productive pedagogies in expressive arts lessons in Malawi
AbstractThe national government in Malawi implemented a new Curriculum: the PrimaryCurriculum and Assessment Reform in 2007. The purpose of this study was to investigatethe enactment of one of the Learning areas, Expressive Arts in three urban and three ruralschools in Zomba district where teachers were first trained to teach Expressive Arts. Thestudy is framed by the Productive Pedagogies framework (Lingard, Hayes, Ladwig, Mills,Bahr et al., 2001). Following a qualitative research design, data were collected throughobservation and post-observation interviews. Data analysis showed limited productivepedagogies in most lessons. The majority of lessons were predominantly characterised bylower intellectual quality, a focus on instrumental knowledge, integration at a superficiallevel, dominance of communalising and gendered practices rather than ‘engagement withdifference’, prevalence of localising discourses ‘rather than connectedness to the world’ anda pedagogy aimed at national examinations. It appears that dominant pedagogic practices inthe Expressive Arts classroom serve to position learners in parochial orientations andissues. There was an obvious disjuncture between the intended curriculum and enactedcurriculum.The overall findings is that the enacted curriculum gave students limited opportunities forthe acquisition of knowledge and development of skills, values and attitudes required forthem to actively participate in the changing Malawian context and to be able to competesuccessfully in other contexts
