A Comparison of Parent and Teacher Ratings of Child Behaviours: the Pygmalion Effect Revisited

    Get PDF
Early schooling experience is a reliable predictor of later school and professional adjustment. In the context of important investment made in the preschool curriculum to promote early academic achievement among children at risk of failure, the validity of screening and referring procedures is a rising issue. 384 children and their family participated in an 18 months longitudinal study from kindergarten to first grade. Results of the present study confirmed the value of screening protocol based on consensus between parents and teacher for greater attention to children needs. However, further results suggested that kindergarten’ teachers might be considered as a unique and valid informant to predict early academic achievement

All Means All: Exploring Co-teaching Dyads Working with Students with Significant Support Needs

Co-teaching is a framework that teachers utilize to support one another and actively include students with diverse learning needs. However, it is not frequent that special education and general education teachers use co-teaching to provide meaningful inclusion for students with significant support needs (SSN). This qualitative study explored effective general and special education co-teaching dyads who worked with students with SSN within the general education classroom. Participants included six teachers (three general education and three special education) who participated in semi-structure and dialogical interviews, virtual and verbal classroom walks, and provided artifacts and reflections. Interviews with participants were conducted separately and served as the primary source of data collection. A combination of case study and portraiture design was used to address the following research questions and sub-questions: What are the experiences of educator dyads (general education teachers and special education teachers) who co-teach with students who have significant support needs (SSN)? What are co-teachers’ (general education teachers and special education teachers) perceptions of elements they believe to be critical in supporting inclusive education for students with significant needs? What are co-teachers’ (general education teachers and special education teachers) perceptions of the challenges to the co-teaching process with students who have significant support needs? What are co-teachers’ (general education teachers and special education teachers) perceptions of the benefits to the co-teaching process with students who have significant support needs? Both within case and across case analysis were conducted to establish common themes among participants. Themes that emerged included meaningful inclusion for students, the importance of school leadership support, and the importance of having deep understanding of both co-teaching and communication needs. Additionally, participants demonstrated that shared goals and beliefs including having high expectations for students and believing they were general education students first and wanting them in the general education classroom were apparent. Themes surrounding vital elements regarding participants’ intense co-teaching partnerships included flexibility, knowing and understanding each other’s roles, communication and collaboration, trust and vulnerability, and achieving the mind meld. Themes around challenges included shared struggles around time and scheduling, individual challenges with stacking classrooms, and building wide responsibilities; and finally, perceptions of teacher benefits as well as both academic and social benefits for students. Findings were integrated with current research, lessons for implementation were provided, and recommendations for future research and limitations were discussed

The text argues that the transhumanist project corresponds to an attempt to control the process of formation of life reduced to a process of production. This logic of control relies on a radical denial of the inform, abject part of the bodies, that is the part that escapes to the human will and master. Against this logic, the ecological crisis manifests and makes possible an experience of the resistance of the bodies

Couple adaptation to the birth of a child : the roles of attachment and perfectionism

    Get PDF
Abstract : This study aims to examine two explanatory factors of relationship satisfaction and parental alliance among both parents of a new child, namely romantic attachment and perfectionism. A sample of 80 couples completed individual online questionnaires. Path analyses based on the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model were carried out to explore the actor and partner effects of each explanatory variable (attachment, perfectionism) on both partners’ postnatal relationship satisfaction and parental alliance. Results revealed that attachment avoidance is negatively related to each partner’s own relationship satisfaction and parental alliance, whereas attachment anxiety is related to their own lower parental alliance. Maladaptive perfectionism is negatively related to each partner’s own relationship satisfaction, whereas adaptive perfectionism is positively related to each partner’s own relationship satisfaction. These results extend the understanding of the factors contributing to parental and couple adaptation in the postnatal period. They highlight the role of attachment and perfectionism for improving postnatal professionals’ interventions

Extracorporeal Treatment in Phenytoin Poisoning: Systematic Review and Recommendations from the EXTRIP Workgroup

The Extracorporeal Treatments in Poisoning (EXTRIP) Workgroup conducted a systematic literature review using a standardized process to develop evidence-based recommendations on the use of extracorporeal treatment (ECTR) in patients with phenytoin poisoning. The authors reviewed all articles, extracted data, summarized findings, and proposed structured voting statements following a predetermined format. A 2-round modified Delphi method was used to reach a consensus on voting statements, and the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method was used to quantify disagreement. 51 articles met the inclusion criteria. Only case reports, case series, and pharmacokinetic studies were identified, yielding a very low quality of evidence. Clinical data from 31 patients and toxicokinetic grading from 46 patients were abstracted. The workgroup concluded that phenytoin is moderately dialyzable (level of evidence = C) despite its high protein binding and made the following recommendations. ECTR would be reasonable in select cases of severe phenytoin poisoning (neutral recommendation, 3D). ECTR is suggested if prolonged coma is present or expected (graded 2D) and it would be reasonable if prolonged incapacitating ataxia is present or expected (graded 3D). If ECTR is used, it should be discontinued when clinical improvement is apparent (graded 1D). The preferred ECTR modality in phenytoin poisoning is intermittent hemodialysis (graded 1D), but hemoperfusion is an acceptable alternative if hemodialysis is not available (graded 1D). In summary, phenytoin appears to be amenable to extracorporeal removal. However, because of the low incidence of irreversible tissue injury or death related to phenytoin poisoning and the relatively limited effect of ECTR on phenytoin removal, the workgroup proposed the use of ECTR only in very select patients with severe phenytoin poisoning
