    Oval Domes: History, Geometry and Mechanics

    An oval dome may be defined as a dome whose plan or profile (or both) has an oval form. The word Aoval@ comes from the latin Aovum@, egg. Then, an oval dome has an egg-shaped geometry. The first buildings with oval plans were built without a predetermined form, just trying to close an space in the most economical form. Eventually, the geometry was defined by using arcs of circle with common tangents in the points of change of curvature. Later the oval acquired a more regular form with two axis of symmetry. Therefore, an “oval” may be defined as an egg-shaped form, doubly symmetric, constructed with arcs of circle; an oval needs a minimum of four centres, but it is possible also to build polycentric ovals. The above definition corresponds with the origin and the use of oval forms in building and may be applied without problem until, say, the XVIIIth century. Since then, the teaching of conics in the elementary courses of geometry made the cultivated people to define the oval as an approximation to the ellipse, an “imperfect ellipse”: an oval was, then, a curve formed with arcs of circles which tries to approximate to the ellipse of the same axes. As we shall see, the ellipse has very rarely been used in building. Finally, in modern geometrical textbooks an oval is defined as a smooth closed convex curve, a more general definition which embraces the two previous, but which is of no particular use in the study of the employment of oval forms in building. The present paper contains the following parts: 1) an outline the origin and application of the oval in historical architecture; 2) a discussion of the spatial geometry of oval domes, i. e., the different methods employed to trace them; 3) a brief exposition of the mechanics of oval arches and domes; and 4) a final discussion of the role of Geometry in oval arch and dome design

    Dielectric relaxation dynamics of high-temperature piezoelectric polyimide copolymers

    Polyimide co-polymers have been prepared based on different diamines as co-monomers: a diamine without CN groups and a novel synthesized diamine with two CN groups prepared by polycondensation reaction followed by thermal cyclodehydration. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements were performed and the dielectric complex function, ac conductivity and electric modulus of the co-polymers were investigated as a function of CN group content in the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 107 Hz at temperatures from 25 to 260 °C. For all samples and temperatures above 150ºC, the dielectric constant increases with increasing temperature due to increaseing conductivity. The α-relaxation is just detected for the sample without CN groups, being this relaxation overlapped by the electrical conductivity contributions in the remaining samples. For the copolymer samples and the polymer with CN groups an important Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars contribution is detected.     The novel coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, had been reported for the first time in December 2019, in Wuhan China. To date, around 6 777 435 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed and 395 597 deaths worldwide. The COVID-19 outbreak is the largest in the past decades and is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). On March 11th, 2020, the world Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 a “Pandemic” with high rate of morbidity and mortality. This review synthesizes the scientific evidence and reports in the literature. The content of this manuscript presents the opinions of specialists and we present our interpretation and recommendations to the Peruvian government.La enfermedad del coronavirus o COVID-19, fue reportada por la primera vez en diciembre del 2019, en la ciudad de Wuhan China. A la fecha más de 6 777 435 casos de COVID-19 y 395 597muertes han sido reportadas globalmente. El brote del COVID-19 es causado por el virus SARS-CoV-2, siendo el brote más grande de las últimas décadas. Por lo cual la Organización Mundial de Salud (OMS) declaró al COVID-19 como pandemia (marzo 11, 2020), asociada con una importante morbilidad y mortalidad. Esta síntesis bibliográfica recapitula las evidencias científicas y los reportes publicados en revistas médicas. El contenido de este manuscrito recoge las opiniones y experiencias de especialistas.     Municipal mortality due to thyroid cancer in Spain

    BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer is a tumor with a low but growing incidence in Spain. This study sought to depict its spatial municipal mortality pattern, using the classic model proposed by Besag, York and Mollié. METHODS: It was possible to compile and ascertain the posterior distribution of relative risk on the basis of a single Bayesian spatial model covering all of Spain's 8077 municipal areas. Maps were plotted depicting standardized mortality ratios, smoothed relative risk (RR) estimates, and the posterior probability that RR > 1. RESULTS: From 1989 to 1998 a total of 2,538 thyroid cancer deaths were registered in 1,041 municipalities. The highest relative risks were mostly situated in the Canary Islands, the province of Lugo, the east of La Coruña (Corunna) and western areas of Asturias and Orense. CONCLUSION: The observed mortality pattern coincides with areas in Spain where goiter has been declared endemic. The higher frequency in these same areas of undifferentiated, more aggressive carcinomas could be reflected in the mortality figures. Other unknown genetic or environmental factors could also play a role in the etiology of this tumor
