Alpha-Line Characterization of Electronic Density in Plasmas Generated by Laser Shock Processing

Laser Shock Processing (LSP) is based on the application of a high intensity pulsed Laser beam ( I > 109 W/cm2 ; T < 50 ns) on a metallic target forcing a sudden vaporization of its surface into a high temperature and density plasma that immediately develops inducing a shock wave propagating into the material. One of the physical processes that should be deeply studied consists of the interaction between plasma and the surface of the material and how it can be affected by mechanisms different from the mere mechanical interaction with the shock wave. To study such process, it is necessary to know the properties of plasma generated by the interaction between the laser and the metallic surface. This type of plasma studies have been realized for years and they are known as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). The difference of this research with the classical LIBS technique either in air or in liquid medium, depends on the shielding the flow water applies on the emission of every present species in the plasma but for the Hydrogen emission

The Masked Polar Group Incorporation (MPGI) Strategy in Drug Design: Effects of Nitrogen Substitutions on Combretastatin and Isocombretastatin Tubulin Inhibitors

    Get PDF
[EN] Colchicine site ligands suffer from low aqueous solubility due to the highly hydrophobic nature of the binding site. A new strategy for increasing molecular polarity without exposing polar groups—termed masked polar group incorporation (MPGI)—was devised and applied to nitrogenated combretastatin analogues. Bulky ortho substituents to the pyridine nitrogen hinder it from the hydrophobic pocket while increasing molecular polarity. The resulting analogues show improved aqueous solubilities and highly potent antiproliferative activity against several cancer cell lines of different origin. The more potent compounds showed moderate tubulin polymerization inhibitory activity, arrested the cell cycle of treated cells at the G2/M phase, and subsequently caused apoptotic cell death represented by the cells gathered at the subG0/G1 population after 48 h of treatment. Annexin V/Propidium Iodide (PI) double-positive cells observed after 72 h confirmed the induction of apoptosis. Docking studies suggest binding at the colchicine site of tubulin in a similar way as combretastatin A4, with the polar groups masked by the vicinal substituents. These results validate the proposed strategy for the design of colchicine site ligands and open a new road to increasing the aqueous solubility of ligands binding in apolar environments

In this work, the microplastic content of sediments collected in July 2020 between 5 and 7 m depth was studied in four locations of La Palma island (Canary Islands, Spain). At each sampling location, three samples were taken parallel to the shoreline. The microplastic content in each sampling corer was studied every 2.5 cm depth after digestion with a H2O2 solution followed by flotation in a saturated NaCl solution. Visualization of the final filtrates under a stereomicroscope revealed that all the sediment samples evaluated contained mostly microfibers (98.3%) which were mainly white/colorless (86.0%) and blue (9.8%), with an average length of 2423 ± 2235 (SD) mm and an average concentration of 2682 ± 827 items per kg of dry weight, being the total number of items found 1,019. Fourier Transform Infrared microscopy analysis of 13.9% (n = 139) of the microfibers also showed that they were mainly cellulosic (81.3%). No significant differences were found between the depths of the sediment. However, significant differences were found between the number of fibers from the sampling sites at the east and west of the island. Such variability could be driven by the winds and ocean mesoscale dynamics in the area. This study confirms the wide distribution of microfibers in sediments from an oceanic island like La Palma, providing their first report in marine sediments of the Canary Islands.En prensa3,20

Molluscan assemblages from shelf and slope soft bottoms of the Alboran Sea have been sampled with a beam trawl during 2014 and 2015 MEDITS expeditions. A total of 134 spp. of molluscs (shell size > 3 mm) were identified, being gastropods the most diverse and dominant group. Four main depth related assemblages were detected in multivariate analyses and characterized by (1) Turritella communis, Chamelea striatula and Nucula sulcata for the inner shelf, (2) Timoclea ovata, Clelandella miliaris and Neopycnodonte cochlear for the outer shelf, (3) Nassarius ovoideus, Calumbonella suturale and N. sulcata for the upper slope and (4) Abra longicallus, Euspira fusca and Aporrhais serresianus for the middle slope. Species richness and abundance decreased with depth, unlike evenness and Shannon-Wiener diversity which displayed an opposite pattern. A higher spatial variability was detected for the shelf, indicating that more assemblages may occur at this level and further sampling is needed for covering all sedimentary habitat types of the Alboran Sea.Versión del edito

Around the world, prickly pear fruits are valued as a source of dietary functional compounds and ingredients for innovative foods. Growth and physicochemical changes of Opuntia albicarpa S. fruits were recorded from 0 to 132 days-after-flowering (DAF) to identify non-destructive maturity-indices. Optimum-ripened fruits were freeze-dried to study physicochemical and functional characteristics of dried and rehydrated pulp. Principal component analysis confirmed growth turned into fruit ripening in DAF 99, and it lasted until DAF 132. Changes in color parameters of the peel correlated with fruit texture and pulp sugar content and taste index (P < 0.01). During freeze-drying, plate temperature had more significant effects than the thickness (P < 0.05). At 30°C, color ΔE between dried and fresh slices augmented, but, texture Δ´s (medium force) between rehydrated and fresh pulp was lower. Color tests could be used to harvest commercially-ripened fruits. Freeze-drying at 30°C improves the rehydrated slices texture regarding thickness maintaining rehydration coefficients. This work was supported by the SIMORELOS program of CONACyT

General Microbiota of the Soft Tick Ornithodoros turicata Parasitizing the Bolson Tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus) in the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve, Mexico

The general bacterial microbiota of the soft tick Ornithodoros turicata found on Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) were analyzed using next generation sequencing. The main aims of the study were to establish the relative abundance of bacterial taxa in the tick, and to document the presence of potentially pathogenic species for this tortoise, other animals, and humans. The study was carried-out in the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve in the northern-arid part of Mexico. Bolson tortoises (n = 45) were inspected for the presence of soft ticks, from which 11 tortoises (24.4%) had ticks in low loads (1–3 ticks per individual). Tick pools (five adult ticks each) were analyzed through 16S rRNA V3–V4 region amplification in a MiSeq Illumina, using EzBioCloud as a taxonomical reference. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) revealed 28 phyla, 84 classes, 165 orders, 342 families, 1013 genera, and 1326 species. The high number of taxa registered for O. turicata may be the result of the variety of hosts that this tick parasitizes as they live inside G. flavomarginatus burrows. While the most abundant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, the most abundant species were two endosymbionts of ticks (Midichloria-like and Coxiella-like). Two bacteria documented as pathogenic to Gopherus spp. were registered (Mycoplasma spp. and Pasteurella testudinis). The bovine and ovine tick-borne pathogens A. marginale and A. ovis, respectively, were recorded, as well as the zoonotic bacteria A. phagocytophilum,Coxiella burnetii, and Neoehrlichia sp. Tortoises parasitized with O. turicata did not show evident signs of disease, which could indicate a possible ecological role as a reservoir that has yet to be demonstrated. In fact, the defense mechanisms of this tortoise against the microorganisms transmitted by ticks during their feeding process are still unknown. Future studies on soft ticks should expand our knowledge about what components of the microbiota are notable across multiple host–microbe dynamics. Likewise, studies are required to better understand the host competence of this tortoise, considered the largest terrestrial reptile in North America distributed throughout the Chihuahuan Desert since the late Pleistocene

Nuclear 11.3μm PAH emission in local active galactic nuclei

    A. Alonso-Herrero et al.We present Gran Telescopio CANARIAS CanariCam 8.7 μm imaging and 7.5-13 μm spectroscopy of six local systems known to host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and have nuclear star formation. Our main goal is to investigate whether the molecules responsible for the 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature are destroyed in the close vicinity of an AGN. We detect 11.3 μm PAH feature emission in the nuclear regions of the galaxies as well as extended PAH emission over a few hundred parsecs. The equivalent width (EW) of the feature shows a minimum at the nucleus but increases with increasing radial distances, reaching typical star-forming values a few hundred parsecs away from the nucleus. The reduced nuclear EWs are interpreted as due to increased dilution from the AGN continuum rather than destruction of the PAH molecules. We conclude that at least those molecules responsible for the 11.3 μm PAH feature survive in the nuclear environments as close as 10 pc from the AGN and for Seyfert-like AGN luminosities. We propose that material in the dusty tori, nuclear gas discs, and/or host galaxies of AGN is likely to provide the column densities necessary to protect the PAH molecules from the AGN radiation field. © 2014 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.AA-H and AH-C are partly funded by the Universidad de Cantabria through the Augusto G.
