    Un artesonado poliédrico manierista en Castroverde de Campos (Zamora, España)

    This paper analyses an outstanding case in the field of historic Spanish carpentry. Built in the sixteenth century, the fivepanel wood coffered ceiling in the church of Santa María del Río in Castroverde de Campos (Zamora, Spain) shows a Renaissance layout with polygonal coffers. It combines Hispano–Islamic technological heritage with some innovative features, including singular disposition of timber, duplicity of structures and unorthodox carpentry joints. Furthermore, convex coffers are introduced among traditional concave ones giving it a marked Mannerist appearance. The likely double role of the author as designer and contractor explains the relevance of prefabricated elements in the construction process of the ceiling, since this effort for modulation and systematization rationalizes procedures and reduces labour costs.Este artículo analiza un caso excepcional en la carpintería de armar en España. Se trata del artesonado de cinco paños de la iglesia de Santa María del Río, en Castroverde de Campos (Zamora). Construido en el s. XVI, con una trama de artesones poligonales en su intradós, combina el diseño renacentista con la tradición técnica hispano-musulmana de estructuras de madera, y presenta aportaciones novedosas como la inusual disposición de escuadrías, la duplicidad de estructuras y las poco ortodoxas uniones carpinteras utilizadas. Además, la introducción de artesones convexos junto a los convencionales artesones cóncavos le confiere un marcado aspecto manierista y resuelve ingeniosamente el encuentro entre paños. La muy posible coincidencia de diseñador y constructor en la misma persona explicaría un proceso de construcción con módulos prefabricados, con el consiguiente ahorro de costes y riesgos laborales

    The combination of halogen and hydrogen bonding: a versatile tool in coordination chemistry

    4-Iodo-N-(4-pyridyl)benzamide (INPBA) and four derived coordination complexes were synthesized in order to explore the combination of halogen and hydrogen bonding interactions in coordination chemistry. An electron-withdrawing carbonyl group attached to the aromatic ring bearing an iodine atom has been introduced to increase its halogen bonding ability. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses ofINPBA, [Ag(INPBA)2]NO3(1), [ZnBr2(INPBA)2](2), [Zn(OCOPh)2(INPBA)2](3) and[HgI2(INPBA)]n(4) show the versatility of theINPBAbuilding block yielding a variety of different interesting structures. Iodine atom arrangement plays a key role by reinforcing and extending crystalline structures into diverse 3D supramolecular networksviaI¿O, I¿N, and I¿I halogen bonding interactions. Besides this, the overall supramolecular architecture of the coordination complexes is modulated by the N-H¿O, N-H¿Br, and C-H¿O hydrogen bonds formed by the carboxamide group.     La triple escalera de caracol en el Convento de Santo Domingo de Bonaval (Santiago, España): hipótesis de diseño y construcción

    By 1700 Domingo de Andrade, at that time master builder of the Santiago de Compostela cathedral (North-west of Spain), built a unique spiral staircase in the Santo Domingo de Bonaval’s Convent, on the outskirts of the city. This paper provides a construction process hypothesis based on the available knowledge and technical resources at that time, involving the geometry, layout, stonework of the steps and their positioning on the site. A 1:5 scale model has been made to demonstrate that the staircase could have been built with no scaffolding at all. That would have meant for Andrade, architect and builder, an important cost reduction. Moreover been a masterpiece with an undeniable show of prowess, it is quite possible that economic reasons had driven the master to this bold design.Hacia 1700, en los últimos años de su carrera, el maestro mayor de la catedral de Santiago de Compostela, Domingo de Andrade, realizó un alarde técnico sin precedentes al construir una singular escalera de caracol en el Convento de Santo Domingo de Bonaval. El presente trabajo ofrece una hipótesis constructiva de la obra en base a los conocimientos y medios disponibles en la época, atendiendo a su geometría, trazado, labra de los peldaños y puesta en obra en condiciones de estabilidad estructural. Se ha realizado una maqueta a escala 1:5, que ha permitido demostrar la hipótesis de que la escalera pudo ser levantada sin necesidad alguna de apeos. Tal circunstancia habría supuesto para Andrade, arquitecto y contratista, una reducción importante de los costes de construcción. Más allá de la indudable demostración de pericia, es muy posible que motivaciones económicas animaran al maestro en su audacia

    Photodegradation Diuron herbicide with TiO2-Al2O3 catalysts supported on graphene nanoplatelets

    Objective: To photodegrade Diuron with TiO2-Al2O3 nanomaterials supported on graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) Design/methodology/approach: The synthesis of the materials was carried out by the sol-gel method under mild conditions. Subsequently, the obtained materials were subjected to thermal processing for structural stabilization and pulverized. Synthesized nanomaterials were then characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Uv-Vis spectroscopy. Results: The adsorption/desorption results indicated that the ternary TiO2-Al2O3/GnPs nanomaterials were found to have complex porosity, which suggested that TiO2-Al2O3 was formed on agglomerated GnPs. X-ray diffraction data revealed that the anatase phase of TiO2 and the g-Al2O3 phase coexist with the crystalline phase of graphene. The morphology of the materials indicates that the nanoplatelets were randomly dispersed in a continuous mixed oxide phase. About the UV analysis, the presence of GnPs at 1 wt % concentration reduces the band gap by 6%. Limitations on study/implications: The physical and chemical properties of GnPs make the material an excellent candidate for the degradation of pollutants by photocatalysis.     An updated list of the Mexican herpetofauna: with a summary of historical and contemporary studies

    The growth in our knowledge of the diversity of the herpetofauna of Mexico has occurred over the period of approximately 445 years from the work of Francisco Hernández to that of a broad multinational array of present-day herpetologists. The work of this huge group of people has established Mexico as one of the most significant centers of herpetofaunal biodiversity in the world. This status is the result of a complex orography, in addition to diverse habitats and environments and the biogeographic history of Mexico. The current herpetofauna consists of 1,421 native and introduced species, allocated to 220 genera, and 61 families. This figure is comprised of 1,405 native species and 16 non-native species (as of April 2023). The non-native species include two anurans, 13 squamates, and one turtle. The level of endemism is very high, presently lying at 63%, with this level expected to increase with time. Species richness varies among the 32 federal entities in the country, from a low of 50 in Tlaxcala to a high of 492 in Oaxaca. Amphibian species richness by state-level can be envisioned as comprising three levels of low, medium, and high, with the lowest levels occurring in the Peninsula of Baja California, a group of seven states in north-central and central Mexico, and a group of three states in the Yucatan Peninsula, with the highest levels occupying the southern states of Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, and the medium level in the remaining states of the country. Reptile species richness also can be allocated to three categories, with the lowest level occupying Baja California Sur, a group of central states, and the states of the Yucatan Peninsula, and the highest level found in a cluster of the states of Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Knowledge of the Mexican herpetofauna will continue to grow with additional studies on systematics, conservation, and the construction of checklists at various levels

    Electron transport in real time from first-principles

    While the vast majority of calculations reported on molecular conductance have been based on the static non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism combined with density functional theory (DFT), in recent years a few time-dependent approaches to transport have started to emerge. Among these, the driven Liouville-von Neumann equation [C. G. Sánchez et al., J. Chem. Phys. 124, 214708 (2006)] is a simple and appealing route relying on a tunable rate parameter, which has been explored in the context of semi-empirical methods. In the present study, we adapt this formulation to a density functional theory framework and analyze its performance. In particular, it is implemented in an efficient all-electron DFT code with Gaussian basis functions, suitable for quantum-dynamics simulations of large molecular systems. At variance with the case of the tight-binding calculations reported in the literature, we find that now the initial perturbation to drive the system out of equilibrium plays a fundamental role in the stability of the electron dynamics. The equation of motion used in previous tight-binding implementations with massive electrodes has to be modified to produce a stable and unidirectional current during time propagation in time-dependent DFT simulations using much smaller leads. Moreover, we propose a procedure to get rid of the dependence of the current-voltage curves on the rate parameter. This method is employed to obtain the current-voltage characteristic of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons of different lengths, with very promising prospects.Fil: Morzan, Uriel.     La organización y agrupación como eje toral para el diseño de esquemas de atención a caprinocultores en el norte de México: estudio de caso

    The present study aimed to organize and group goat farmers with similar socioeconomic and technological profiles to design targeted attention schemes according to their needs. The study consisted of two phases: As for the first phase, the socioeconomic and productive profile of the producers were stratified and characterized. In the second phase, goat producers' perceptions were considered to carry out the main problems and limitations of the production system. The data were analyzed through Multiple Correspondence Analysis. As a result, five groups of producers were identified: G1 with the highest milk production d-1 (p=0.03), the highest number of hectares susceptible to cultivation, and with the hectares sown (p<0.0001); G2 with the highest educational level (p=0.0002); G3 compounded by elder people (p<0.0001), with a great number of children (p<0.0001), and without a difference in commercialization price; G4 compounded by elder people (p=0.0001) with inactivity time (p=0.0011), and, G5 with the highest number of children (p=0.0001), the highest flock size (p=0.03) with more hours dedicated to grazing (p=0.02). The analysis of Principal Components indicated, that, CP 1 and CP 2, presented the highest proportion of the variation (46.55%). Additionally, producers reported the main problems that limit their productivity. The stratification and grouping of goat farmers based on their similarities allowed defining critical points of attention, in such a way that strengthening policies towards these marginalized groups will easily fulfill their missionEl objetivo del presente estudio, fue organizar y agrupar caprinocultores con perfiles socioeconómicos y tecnológicos similares, con la finalidad de diseñar esquemas de atención dirigida y acorde a sus necesidades. El estudio constó de dos fases: En la primera se estratificó, delimitó y caracterizó el perfil socioeconómico y productivo de los caprinocultores. La segunda fase se realizó considerando la percepción de los productores hacia los principales problemas y limitantes del sistema de producción. Se realizó un análisis de correspondencia múltiple. Se identificaron 5 grupos de productores. G1 presenta la mayor producción de leche d-1 (p=0.03), el mayor número de hectáreas susceptibles a cultivo y hectáreas sembradas (p<0.0001). G2 posee el mayor nivel educativo (p=0.0002). G3 presenta mayor edad (p<0.0001), mayor número de hijos (p<0.0001) yprecio de comercialización (sin diferencia). G4 tiene la mayor edad (p=0.0001) y tiempo en la actividad (p=0.0011), y G5 mayor número de hijos (p=0.0001), tamaño de rebaño (p=0.03) y horas dedicadas al pastoreo (p=0.02). El análisis de componentes principales indicó que los CP 1 y CP 2 presentan el 46.55% de la variación. Los productores refirieron los principales problemas que limitan la productividad. La estratificación y agrupación de productores basados en sus similitudes permite definir claramente puntos críticos de atención, de tal manera que las políticas de fortalecimiento hacia estos grupos marginados cumplirán más fácilmente su cometid
