OPTIMAL SHARING OF SURGICAL COSTS IN THE PRESENCE OF QUEUES

We deal with a cost allocation problem arising from sharing a medical service in the presence of queues. We use a standard queuing theory model in a context with several medical procedures, a certain demand of treatment and a maximum average waiting time guarantee set by the government. We show that sharing the use of an operating theatre to treat the patients of the different procedures, leads to a cost reduction. Then, we compute an optimal fee per procedure for the use of the operating theatre, based on the Shapley value. Afterwards, considering the post-operative time, we characterize the conditions under which this cooperation among treatments has a positive impact on the average post-operative costs. Finally, we provide a numerical example constructed on the basis of real data, to highlight the main features of our model.Surgical Waiting Lists; Queueing Theory; Cost-Sharing Game.

El desarrollo cultural de las Islas Cícladas durante el Bronce Antiguo a través del mundo funerario

Los hallazgos arqueológicos de las últimas décadas han venido a enriquecer el panorama funerario cicládico del tercer milenio a. C. y a romper con la homogeneidad que anteriormente parecía caracterizar el desarrollo cultural isleño. Las variantes locales y los paralelos con las vecinas áreas del Egeo refuerzan la idea de un desarrollo regional diferencial muy marcado por el estado de los circuitos de comunicación marítima en los que las Cícladas se insertan. Igualmente, la identificación de estas influencias junto con el reciente estudio de los vestigios de estructuras y objetos especiales asociados a las tumbas pueden darnos pistas sobre la existencia de un ritual vinculado al mundo funerario. Asimismo, a través del estudio de ajuares y disposición de las estructuras funerarias, pueden inferirse algunas cuestiones sobre la jerarquización social (y, en general, sobre la valoración política y social) en un mundo que, por el momento, nos niega tal acercamiento atendiendo a la estructura de los núcleos poblacionales. Finalmente, a mayor escala, las costumbres funerarias serán una de las variables que puedan ayudarnos a encontrar continuidades y rupturas dentro de la secuencia cultural cicládica que acusa tan importantes lagunas para el Bronce Antiguo.The archaeological discoveries of the last decades have enriched the knowledge about Cycladic burial habits in the third millennium BC. Theyhave broken as well the homogeneity that seemed to define the cultural development of the island. Local variations and similarities with other Aegean areas reinforce the idea of Cycladic regional development influenced by the evolution of the maritime interaction networks. Furthermore, we can learn that there exists a ritual linked to the funerary world through the study of cultural influences, burial structures remains and some special objects related to the graves.We can also infer some matters about the social structure and, in general, about the politics of value through the grave offerings and the arrangement of the tombs. This is especially relevant because of the bad preservation of the settlements. Finally, on a largescale, the burial habits will be one of the keys to find cultural continuities and changes within the Early Cycladic Age

Las nuevas tecnologías, especialmente, el correo electrónico e Internet se han convertido a lo largo de la última década en herramientas clave para la comunicación y gestión de procesos entre individuos, empresas e instituciones. Existen pocas evidencias, no obstante, acerca de qué modo las organizaciones están utilizando dichas herramientas de modo eficiente en su relación con sus audiencias clave y, especialmente, con los medios de comunicación, labor ésta de la que normalmente son responsables los departamentos de relaciones públicas y/o comunicación corporativa de las organizaciones. En este contexto, esta comunicación analiza la utilización de Internet -en su relación con los medios de información- por parte de las empresas españolas, de varios países de la Europa Occidental, de Estados Unidos y, Singapur. Para ello, el estudio se basa en una muestra de 170 empresas, líderes en facturación, de Alemania, Dinamarca, Francia, Gran Bretaña y Noruega, Estados Unidos y Singapur, además de España. En la comunicación se ofrecen resultados acerca de las características de las Salas de Prensa Virtuales de las empresas líderes de cada uno de estos países y se indican los aspectos comunes y diferenciales más relevantes de todos ellos

The use of the "Quirina" by Claudius. About "CIL II", 159

Se estudia el epígrafe CIL II, 159 hallado en la ciudad lusitana de "Ammaia" para valorar si la letra grabada entre el nombre gentilicio y el "cognomen" del homenajeado, "P. Cornelius Q. Macer", puede interpretarse como "Q(uirina)". Lo excepcional que resultaría abreviar la tribu "Quirina" únicamente con la inicial en el ambiente de "Ammaia" durante el siglo I no constituye argumento válido para descartar esta posibilidad. Sabemos que este personaje recibió la ciudadanía romana de Claudio, quien, si la tesis aquí defendida es correcta, le habría inscrito en esta tribu antes de la llegada al poder de la dinastía Flavia.The aim of this paper is to study the inscription carved on an epigraphic source (“CIL” II, 159) found in “Ammaia” (Lusitania). It is suggested to interpret as “Q(uirina)” the letter between “nomen” and “cognomen” of “P. Cornelius Q. Macer”. We can not reject this explanation on the basis that Q. would be an unusual abbreviation for “Quirina” in the first century AD in a place like “Ammaia”. If my interpretation proves right, the new citizen was included in the “Quirina” by Claudius before the Flavian dynasty

Quantum Corrections to Unimodular Gravity

The problem of the cosmological constant appears in a new light in Unimodular Gravity. In particular, the zero momentum piece of the potential (that is, the constant piece independent of the matter fields) does not automatically produce a cosmological constant proportional to it. Behavior of propagating and evanescent components in azimuthally polarized non-paraxial fields

The contribution of the propagating and the evanescent waves associated with freely propagating non-paraxial light fields whose transverse component is azimuthally polarized at some plane is investigated. Analytic expressions are derived for describing both the spatial shape and the relative weight of the propagating and the evanescent components integrated over the transverse plane. The analysis is carried out within the framework of the plane-wave angular spectrum approach.
