Highly anisotropic thermoelectric properties of carbon sulfide monolayers

Strain engineering applied to carbon monosulphide monolayers allows to control the bandgap, controlling electronic and thermoelectric responses. Herein, we study the semiconductor-metal phase transition of this layered material driven by strain control on the basis of first-principles calculations. We consider uniaxial and biaxial tensile strain and we find a highly anisotropic electronic and thermoelectonic responses depending on the direction of the applied strain. Our results indicate that strain-induced response could be an effective method to control the electronic response and the thermoelectric performance.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Decays of polarized top quarks to lepton, neutrino and jets at NLO QCD

We compute the differential and total rate of the semileptonic decay of polarized top-quarks t→ℓνℓ+bjet+jett\to \ell \nu_\ell + b{\rm jet} + {\rm jet} at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling with an off-shell intermediate WW boson. We present several normalized distributions, in particular those that reflect the tt-spin analyzing powers of the lepton, the b-jet and the W+W^+ boson at LO and NLO QCD.Comment: Latex, 22 page

1-D Cluster Array at the Three Phase Contact Line in Diluted Colloids Subjected to A.C. Electric Fields

Colloidal particles provide an efficient mean of building multiple scale structured materials from colloidal dispersions. In this Brief Report, we account for experimental evidence on the formation of a colloidal cluster array at a three-phase contact line. We study the influence of low frequency external alternating electric fields on a diluted colloidal dispersion opened to the air. We focus on the cluster formation and their evolution in the meniscus by measuring characteristic times and lengths. We observe that the clusters are separated by a well-defined length and that, in our experimental conditions, they survive between five a fifteen minutes. These new results could be of technological relevance in building tailored colloidal structures in non-patterned substrates.Comment: There is supplementary information (see refs. 24, 27), which is available upon request ([email protected]

In-gap impurity states as the hallmark of the Quantum Spin Hall phase

We study the different response to an impurity of the two topologically different phases shown by a two dimensional insulator with time reversal symmetry, namely, the Quantum Spin Hall and the normal phase. We consider the case of graphene as a toy model that features the two phases driven, respectively, by intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking. We find that strictly normalizable in-gap impurity states only occur in the Quantum Spin Hall phase and carry dissipationless current whose quirality is determined by the spin and pseudospin of the residing electron. Our results imply that topological order can be unveiled by local probes of defect states.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Parity violation in quasielastic electron-nucleus scattering within the relativistic impulse approximation

We study parity violation in quasielastic (QE) electron-nucleus scattering using the relativistic impulse approximation. Different fully relativistic approaches have been considered to estimate the effects associated with the final-state interactions. We have computed the parity-violating quasielastic (PVQE) asymmetry and have analyzed its sensitivity to the different ingredients that enter in the description of the reaction mechanism: final-state interactions, nucleon off-shellness effects, current gauge ambiguities. Particular attention has been paid to the description of the weak neutral current form factors. The PVQE asymmetry is proven to be an excellent observable when the goal is to get precise information on the axial-vector sector of the weak neutral current. Specifically, from measurements of the asymmetry at backward scattering angles good knowledge of the radiative corrections entering in the isovector axial-vector sector can be gained. Finally, scaling properties shown by the interference γ−Z\gamma-Z nuclear responses are also analyzed.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
