Efficiency in the management of urban water services. What have we learned after four decades of research?

The analysis of efficiency in the management of urban water services offers valuable information both for the managers of this service and for public bodies in order to introduce improvements in business practices and in the design of public policies. Since the pioneering study carried out by Ford and Wardford (1969), there have been many attempts to follow this line of research. Due to the importance of the subject and the volume of publications in this field, we believe it is necessary to provide a balance of the work carried out over the last four decades. In this overview, we look at the main questions which have arisen over this period, we provide a synthesis of the results obtained and, finally, we point out some challenges for future research.Water utilities; Efficiency; Firm behaviour; Water

Gender wage gap. A complete view from Italy

Wage discrimination has been widely investigated so that I try to contribute to this strand of the literature showing if there is evidence to exist in Italy for the period from 2000 to 2012 by using panel data from SHIW. Moreover, I focus the investigation on the informal labour market but I also do on the formal one. To get this, I perform Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition model. The main goal of these estimates is observing whether the results change when I include a variable to control non-random selection processes. In accordance with this, I obtain that gender wage gap is larger among formal workers when I control for this correction term than when I do not control for it and smaller among informal workers. Finally, I perform a robustness check to observe how this discrimination affects in each part of the informal workers distribution

Interacciones entre fármacos de libre venta y de prescripción.

Tesis (Químico Farmacéutico)Los medicamentos son una de las herramientas terapéuticas más utilizadas en la práctica de la medicina, cuyo uso de manera apropiada permite la obtención de importantes beneficios sanitarios representados por la prevención, diagnóstico, curación, atenuación y tratamiento de las enfermedades y sus síntomas. No obstante, su utilización puede llevar a problemas importantes de morbilidad y de mortalidad. Las reacciones adversas son el resultado de una interacción entre el organismo el medicamento y una serie de factores extrínsecos adicionales. Influyen, por tanto, los factores propios, los ambientales, los ligados al propio enfermo (procesos farmacocinéticos, edad, estado patológico) y las asociaciones entre medicamentos. Estas últimas pueden dar lugar a i'11teracciones farmacológicas. Las cuales son necesarias conocer, para predecir las probables interacciones y así advertir a la población y a los profesionales del área de la salud, sobre los potenciales riesgos. Dado que no existen estudios en farmacia comunitaria sobre las interacciones farmacológicas potenciales. Se realizó un estudio observacional, transversal y descriptivo, mediante una encuesta aplicada a 731 clientes-pacientes que frecuentaban los locales de Farmacias Ahumada, de la Provincia de Santiago, con el objetivo de estudiar las posibles interacciones que pudiesen presentarse en la administración conjunta de fármacos de prescripción y de libre venta. De las encuestas realizadas se obtuvo que: el 76,34% de los clientes-pacientes se administra 3 o 4 medicamentos concomitantemente; el consumo promedio fue de 3,92 medicamentos; del total de fármacos el 59,97% corresponde a analgésicos, cardiovasculares y antiinfecciosos; las interacciones de severidad mayor corresponden a fármacos analgésicos + sistema nervioso central; las interacciones más frecuentes corresponden a fármacos analgésicos + cardiovasculares..

Redes y eticidad como pensamiento estratégico de la comunicación organizacional frente a los legados de la cultura de la “gran madre”

Este artículo tiene el propósito de proponer y reflexionar sobre la necesidad de construir un modelo de mediación comunicativa en general y para el desarrollo de la vida en las organizaciones en lo particular, basado en la colaboración y la participación social que se constituya como una nueva perspectiva civilizatoria que permita no sólo comprender la complejidad del fenómeno comunicativo, sino también para hacer habitable y sustentable nuestra condición de existencia en el mundo social e institucional para salva-guardarnos como especie, frente a dos fenómenos culturales que comienzan a ser dominantes a nivel de los valores y la comunicación. Uno de ellos, se refiere a la creencia de que toda autoridad por el simple hecho de serlo se convierte en sí misma en sacra y por ello intocable y sin poder criticar, esto en función de la herencia que nos dio la cultura de la gran madre. Y dos como, este fenómeno de lo sagrado se lo apropia el capitalismo para desarrollar formas de comunicación simbólica que elaboran un discurso de la comunicación como un aspecto eminente-mente comercial (que se observa en los lenguajes de las empresas) y la reducción de lo comunicativo a pautas de mensajes y de persuasión.This article aims at proposing and reflecting on the need to build a general communicative mediation model in general; and the development of life in organizations in particular, based on the social participation and collaboration constituted as a new perspective that allows not only to understand the complexity of the communicative phenomenon, but also to make habitable and sustainable our condition of existence in the social and institutional worlds. Thus, a model that helps to safeguard us as specie facing two cultural phenomena that have gained prominence when it comes to values and communication. One of them refers to the belief that every authority, just because it is, becomes in itself sacred, therefore, untouchable and unsuitable for criticism, based on the legacy given to us by the great mother. Graphic study and geovisualization of the old windmills of La Mancha (Spain)

In Spain, one can find geographical diversity and unique sites of great significance and cultural heritage. Many of the nation’s treasured places, however, have deteriorated or have even disappeared. What is left, then, should be studied and documented both graphically and infographically. It is important to preserve and document Spain’s unique locations, especially those related to vernacular heritage, to transhumance and visual impact assessment in many national infrastructures projects. Windmills are important examples of agro-industrial heritage and are sometimes found in the beds of streams and rivers but can also be found high in the hills. Their presence is constant throughout the Iberian Peninsula. These mills are no longer in use due to technological advances and the emergence of new grinding systems. The aim of this study was to present a specific methodology for the documentation of windmills, to create a graphical representation using computer graphics, as well as to disseminate knowledge of this agro-industrial heritage. This research has integrated graphic materials, including freehand sketches, photographs, digital orthophotos, computer graphics and multimedia in the creation of a specific methodology based on cutting-edge technology such as a digital photogrammetric workstation (DPW), global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), computer-aided design (CAD) and computer animation

In the Line of Investigation that in the department of “Technical Drawing” in the School of Agriculture Engineering of Madrid, we carry out on the study of The Technical Curves and his singularities, we demonstrate an interesting property of the Logarithmic Spiral. The demonstrated property consists of which the logarithmic spiral is a autoisoptic curve, that is to say that if from a point P anyone of the spiral tangent straight lines draw up to the previous arc, these form a constant angle α. This demonstration is novel and in addition we get to contribute a method to calculate the angle α given the equation of the spiral

Network coevolution drives segregation and enhances Pareto optimal equilibrium selection in coordination games

In this work we assess the role played by the dynamical adaptation of the interactions network, among agents playing Coordination Games, in reaching global coordination and in the equilibrium selection. Specifically, we analyze a coevolution model that couples the changes in agents' actions with the network dynamics, so that while agents play the game, they are able to sever some of their current connections and connect with others. We focus on two update rules: Replicator Dynamics (RD) and Unconditional Imitation (UI). We investigate a Pure Coordination Game (PCG), in which choices are equivalent, and on a General Coordination Game (GCG), for which there is a risk-dominant action and a payoff-dominant one. The network plasticity is measured by the probability to rewire links. Changing this plasticity parameter, there is a transition from a regime in which the system fully coordinates in a single connected component to a regime in which the system fragments in two connected components, each one coordinated on a different action (either if both actions are equivalent or not). The nature of this fragmentation transition is different for different update rules. Second, we find that both for RD and UI in a GCG, there is a regime of intermediate values of plasticity, before the fragmentation transition, for which the system is able to fully coordinate in a single component network on the payoff-dominant action, i. e., coevolution enhances payoff-dominant equilibrium selection for both update rules.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Scientific Report

Educación en el contexto de las IDE.

La demanda de recursos humanos capacitados es fundamental para la puesta en marcha de las iniciativas IDE, así como la generación de estrategias que contribuyan a su difusión y acercamiento a los distintos niveles educativos. En este contexto, se indaga en la normativa relacionada con IDE para identificar qué papel se le asigna a la educación. En particular INSPIRE apoya implícitamente la importancia de la educación y formación en el marco de las instituciones y organizaciones. Mucho más explícitas son las recomendaciones lanzadas desde instituciones y organizaciones nacionales e internacionales, como es el caso de la IDE de España, la iniciativa GSDI y el OGC. En algunos de estos casos, las organizaciones disponen de material de apoyo a la docencia (videos instructivos, listas de discusión, cursos, etc.) o recursos que han realizado orientados a otros niveles educativos, específicamente a la Educación Secundaria Obligatoria de España. Se hace una mención especial al reciente libro ?Fundamentos de las Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales?, que representa un nuevo recurso susceptible de ser utilizado para impartir docencia. Este trabajo, incluye una parte del contenido incluido en uno de los capítulos del libro. Se presentan a continuación una serie recursos educativos de referencia susceptibles de ser utilizadas para la formación en IDE. Finalmente, se presentan unas breves conclusiones haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de dar a conocer a los ciudadanos las potencialidades de las IDE a través de distintas estrategias de formación y difusión orientadasa los distintos niveles educativos con la colaboración de instituciones relacionadas con la IG
