    First record of Abrothrix jelskii (Thomas, 1894) (Mammalia: Rodentia: Cricetidae) in Salta province, northwestern Argentina: Filling gaps and distribution map

    Abrothrix jelskii is one of the lesser-known species in the genus Abrothrix, and it has only been recorded in a few localities in highland environments along the central Andean range. In Argentina, existing records are restricted to just one locality in Jujuy province. We have recently recorded this species in Salta Province, extending its known distribution 150 km northward in northwestern Argentina and 175 km further to the southeast compared to existing records from localities in southern Bolivia. Ten other rodent species were also recorded in the same area, with some of these records, such as those for Auliscomys sublimis, Akodon boliviensis, and Phyllotis sp., being noteworthy as well.Fil: Jayat, Jorge Pablo.     Consideraciones Epistemológicas para una Educación Inclusiva más oportuna: la necesidad de un nuevo paradigma epistémico

    Este documento analiza las problemáticas fundacionales del enfoque de educación inclusiva y sus repercusiones, en la consolidación de un enfoque de Educación Para Todos (E.P.T.). Se reconoce el desplazamiento de una matriz epistémica del tipo trans-ontológica por sobre los desafíos fundacionales que cruzan la ciencia educativa en general en el marco de la post-modernidad. Inicialmente, se identifica, mediante una observación reflexiva, la transformación de ciertas necesidades sociales y su eficacia simbólica, develando la urgencia de contribuir a sentar las condiciones epistémicas y extra epistémicas más coherentes con los desafíos de asumir la heterogeneidad como parte de un enfoque legitimador de la totalidad humana. Se concluye reconociendo la existencia de un estatus científico hibrido e impreciso en la materia, apuntando a refundar aquellas visiones fundacionales que lo sostienen y evaluando los límites y las limitaciones de aquellos apriorismos en la construcción de saberes pedagógicos oportunos respecto de los desafíos del nuevo siglo

    8 páginas, 2 figuras, 1 tablaData on opportunistic sightings of diamond-shaped squid Thysanoteuthis rhombus egg masses in the Canary Islands (Atlantic Ocean) are presented. A total of 16 egg masses of this species were recorded and photographed from 2000 to 2010 around the western islands of the archipelago (El Hierro, Tenerife and La Gomera). These data reveal the existence of an important spawning area for diamond-shaped squid around the Canary Islands, in subtropical east Atlantic waters.     Neogene activity of the Barrancas Bancas Fault and its relationship with Hydrothermal and volcanic activity

    The chronology and nature of the Neogene-Cuaternary deformation in the Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ) in the north of Chile is partially unclear. Some authors have identified compression in isolated areas of the western slopes of the Altiplano-Puna Plateau between the 23,5 and 25ºS, which deformed Miocene and Pliocene deposits (e.g. Gonzalez et al., 2009). In this context, Barrancas Blancas fault, located in the western limit of the Western Cordillera, outcrops in a scarp oriented NS and represents a record of the tectonic activity during the Miocene (Gardeweg et al., 1993). This fault affects to Pampa de Mulas gravels (23,6±1,6 Ma) and Rio Frio Ignimbrites (17,3± 1,7 Ma), and is covered by Miocene-to-Holocene alluvial deposits. In the eastern side of Punta Negra Salar was emplaced the Monognetic Punta Negra volcano, located over the Barrancas Blanca-Fault scarp (10±0,8 Ma) and immediately to the south of Punta Negra volcano, travertine deposits are present in the footwall of Barrancas Blancas fault (10-2 Ma; Quade et al., 2017). This work presents the preliminary results from geomorphologic and stratigraphic data, and structural analysis from Barrancas Blancas fault, and the sediment wedge related with the fault scarpament. These results were combined with geochronological data from magmatic and hydrothermal related rocks/minerals, with the objetive to rebuild the activity of Barrancas Blancas fault and its relation with the magmatic activity during Miocene-Pliocene. Our results show that Barrancas Blancas fault has reverse displacement during Lower Miocene, which caused folding of the Rio Frio ignimbrite and Pampa de Mulas Formation. This period has a maximum age of 11,7 Ma and can be related to the local uplift of the Altiplano-Puna plateau. Using a cinematic analysis, we have identified a period with transtensional activity for Barrancas Blancas fault, which had been coeval with magmatic/hydrothermal activity, the last represented by monogenetic (Punta Negra volcano, ca. 10 Ma) and geothermal activity. The hydrothermal activity in the Barrancas Blancas fault would have lasted until to ca. 2 Ma, coeval with the depositation of alluvial fans related with the scarp backward movement. Our hypothesis suggests that transtensional activity of the Barrancas Blancas fault is related with the uplift and local collapse of the Altiplano

    A case–control study to assess the effectiveness of pertussis vaccination during pregnancy on newborns, Valencian community, Spain, 1 March 2015 to 29 February 2016

    In the Valencian Community (Spain), the programme of maternal pertussis vaccination during pregnancy started in January 2015. The objective of this study was to estimate in this region the vaccine effectiveness (VE) in protecting newborns against laboratory-confirmed pertussis infection. A matched case–control study was undertaken in the period between 1 March 2015 and 29 February 2016. Twenty-two cases and 66 controls (+/− 15 days of age difference) were included in the study. Cases were non-vaccinated infants < 3 months of age at disease onset testing positive for pertussis by real-time PCR. For every case three unvaccinated controls were selected. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated by multiple conditional logistic regression for association between maternal vaccination and infant pertussis. Other children in the household, as well as mother- and environmental covariates were taken into account. The VE was calculated as 1 − OR. Mothers of five cases (23%) and of 41 controls (62%) were vaccinated during pregnancy. The adjusted VE was 90.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 56.6 to 98.1). The only covariate in the final model was breastfeeding (protective effect). Our study provides evidence in favour of pertussis vaccination programmes for pregnant women in order to prevent whooping cough in infants aged less than 3 months

    Presented at the Role of irrigation and drainage in a sustainable future: USCID fourth international conference on irrigation and drainage on October 3-6, 2007 in Sacramento, California.Includes bibliographical references.This study, carried out between October 2004 and November 2005 on the island of Tenerife, covers: (1) characterization of the irrigated crops and quantification of the gross irrigation requirements (GIRs) of each crop using surveys; (2) field evaluation of drip/micro, spray and sprinkle irrigation systems to obtain global distribution uniformity (DU) as indicated by the Cal Poly ITRC (Irrigation Training and Research Centre, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, USA); (3) analysis of on farm irrigation efficiency using local climatic data; and (4) inclusion of this data into a Geographic Information System (GIS). Crop GIRs show high deviations mainly because of the multiple microclimate conditions on the island, the irrigation methods used, the crop systems (greenhouses, etc) and the irrigation management. Field evaluation provided an average DU of 0.83 in drip/micro and spray irrigated banana crops, 0.69 in sprinkle irrigated ones, 0.58 in sprinkle irrigated horticulture and 0.81 for tomato crops (100% drip). Data showed that approximately 30% of the non-uniformity was due to pressure differences in the irrigation system, 3% due to unequal drainage, 7% due to unequal application rates, and 60% was due to other causes (which include manufacturing variation, plugging, and wear). Irrigation efficiency is around 80% in drip irrigated tomato and banana crops and 75% in sprinkle systems. Data showed that efficiency is slightly lower in greenhouses and mesh greenhouse crops than in non-protected crops basically due to the fact that although protected crops require less water, they receive an equal quantity of water. Inclusion of the data into a GIS makes possible a high level of agronomic water consumption control on the island

    La ontología social y el círculo virtuoso de la educación pública

    En este artículo argumentamos que la naturaleza pública o privada de la educación tiene una incidencia directa en las instituciones que conforman la realidad social. Para sustentar lo anterior, en primer lugar discutimos cómo, según Searle, habitamos un mundo de instituciones gobernadas por reglas y poderes deónticos, ontológicamente irreductibles. Luego, postulamos que la intencionalidad colectiva requiere de la confianza para mantenerse, y esta aumenta cuando gobiernan reglas y poderes deónticos en circunstancias normales. Finalmente, planteamos que la educación pública es una institución que, a diferencia de la privada, privilegia el espacio de lo común. Sócrates es un ejemplo de esto, al proponer una filosofía que no solo busca la verdad, sino que además privilegia el reconocimiento de la ley por sobre la satisfacción inmediata de deseos e inclinaciones personales. De todo esto se explica el círculo virtuoso: la educación pública, al ser inclusiva y beneficiar a todos, potencia las instituciones sociales que tutelan ese interés y, dentro de ellas, el servicio público

    Podoplanin expression in the development and progression of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Podoplanin expression is attracting interest as a marker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. We therefore investigated the expression pattern and clinical significance of podoplanin during the development and progression of laryngeal carcinomas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Podoplanin expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from 84 patients with laryngeal premalignancies and 53 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. We found podoplanin expression extending from the basal to the suprabasal layer of the epithelium in 37 (44%) of 84 dysplastic lesions, whereas normal epithelium showed negligible expression. Patients carrying podoplanin-positive lesions had a higher laryngeal cancer incidence than those with negative expression reaching borderline statistical significance (51% <it>versus </it>30%, <it>P </it>= 0.071). Podoplanin expression in laryngeal carcinomas exhibited two distinct patterns. 20 (38%) cases showed diffuse expression in most tumour cells and 33 (62%) focal expression at the proliferating periphery of tumour nests. High podoplanin expression was inversely correlated with T classification (<it>P </it>= 0.033), disease stage (<it>P </it>= 0.006), and pathological grade (<it>P </it>= 0.04). There was a trend, although not significant, towards reduced disease-specific survival for patients with low podoplanin levels (<it>P </it>= 0.31) and diffuse expression pattern (<it>P </it>= 0.08).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Podoplanin expression increases in the early stages of laryngeal tumourigenesis and it seems to be associated with a higher laryngeal cancer risk. Podoplanin expression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas, however, diminishes during tumour progression. Taken together, these data support a role for podoplanin expression in the initiation but not in the progression of laryngeal cancers.</p

    Efficient unidirectional nanoslit couplers for surface plasmons

    Plasmonics is based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes which can be laterally confined below the diffraction limit, thereby enabling ultracompact optical components. In order to exploit this potential, the fundamental bottleneck of poor light-SPP coupling must be overcome. In established SPP sources (using prism, grating} or nanodefect coupling) incident light is a source of noise for the SPP, unless the illumination occurs away from the region of interest, increasing the system size and weakening the SPP intensity. Back-side illumination of subwavelength apertures in optically thick metal films eliminates this problem but does not ensure a unique propagation direction for the SPP. We propose a novel back-side slit-illumination method based on drilling a periodic array of indentations at one side of the slit. We demonstrate that the SPP running in the array direction can be suppressed, and the one propagating in the opposite direction enhanced, providing localized unidirectional SPP launching.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Development and implementation of a virtual laboratory for training process improvement in the mechanics of continuous media

    The project arises from the need to develop improved teaching methodologies in field of the mechanics of continuous media. The objective is to offer the student a learning process to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge, cognitive skills and the responsibility and autonomy to professional development in this area. Traditionally the teaching of the concepts of these subjects was performed through lectures and laboratory practice. During these lessons the students attitude was usually passive, and therefore their effectiveness was poor. The proposed methodology has already been successfully employed in universities like University Bochum, Germany, University the South Australia and aims to improve the effectiveness of knowledge acquisition through use by the student of a virtual laboratory. This laboratory allows to adapt the curricula and learning techniques to the European Higher Education and improve current learning processes in the University School of Public Works Engineers -EUITOP- of the Technical University of Madrid -UPM-, due there are not laboratories in this specialization. The virtual space is created using a software platform built on OpenSim, manages 3D virtual worlds, and, language LSL -Linden Scripting Language-, which imprints specific powers to objects. The student or user can access this virtual world through their avatar -your character in the virtual world- and can perform practices within the space created for the purpose, at any time, just with computer with internet access and viewfinder. The virtual laboratory has three partitions. The virtual meeting rooms, where the avatar can interact with peers, solve problems and exchange existing documentation in the virtual library. The interactive game room, where the avatar is has to resolve a number of issues in time. And the video room where students can watch instructional videos and receive group lessons. Each audiovisual interactive element is accompanied by explanations framing it within the area of knowledge and enables students to begin to acquire a vocabulary and practice of the profession for which they are being formed. Plane elasticity concepts are introduced from the tension and compression testing of test pieces of steel and concrete. The behavior of reticulated and articulated structures is reinforced by some interactive games and concepts of tension, compression, local and global buckling will by tests to break articulated structures. Pure bending concepts, simple and composite torsion will be studied by observing a flexible specimen. Earthquake resistant design of buildings will be checked by a laboratory test video
