Resíduos de jardim

Este capítulo do Manual apresenta indicações para a gestão dos resíduos de espaços verdes. Os resíduos vegetais de jardins são gerados de forma natural, com a queda de folhas, frutos e mesmo de ramos, ou como resultado das acções de manutenção dos espaços verdes, pelo corte, poda ou abate. Vulgarmente tratados como resíduos convencionais são muitas vezes depositados em contentores de resíduos indiferenciados ou, em alternativa, são queimados. No primeiro caso, o destino provável serão os aterros sanitários, onde irão ocupar volume, contribuindo para o seu rápido enchimento e gerando múltiplos impactes ambientais. No caso da queima, existe naturalmente o risco de propagação de fogos, agravado se esta for desenvolvida em períodos mais quentes ou se não forem tomadas as devidas precauções. Effect of European Sovereign debt crisis on banks’ stock market performances: application to Portuguese data

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Finance from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis paper studies the impact of the European sovereign debt crisis on Portuguese banks’ share prices. I employ an event study methodology to assess the behavior of banks’ share prices before, and after a credit rating announcement in relation to both the sovereign and the banks individually. I find that sovereign credit ratings have a significant impact on banks’ stock market returns while individual bank credit ratings seem to have little influence. This is probably due to the fact that banks’ credit ratings have been reflecting changes in sovereign ratings rather than any idiosyncratic factors of banks’ solvency. Among the rating agencies studied the most predominant is Standard & Poor’s. Furthermore, I find that the behavior of banks’ stock returns exhibit a certain degree of market inefficiency and anticipation

Biotechnological applications of mammalian odorant-binding proteins

The olfactory system of mammals allows the detection and discrimination of thousands of odors from the environment. In mammals, odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are considered responsible to carry odorant molecules across the aqueous nasal mucus to the olfactory receptors (ORs). The three-dimensional structure of these proteins presents eight antiparallel ?-sheets and a short ?-helical segment close to the C terminus, typical of the lipocalins family. The great ability of OBPs to bind differentiated ligand molecules has driven the research to understand the mechanisms underlying the OBP function in nature and the development of advanced biotechnological applications. This review describes the role of mammalian OBPs in the olfactory perception, highlighting the influence of several key parameters (amino acids, temperature, ionic strength, and pH) in the formation of the OBP/ligand complex. Ways of engaging. Re-assessing effects of the relationship between landscape architecture and art in community involvement and design practice

Universidade de CoimbraIn 2000, the European Landscape Convention has introduced and highlighted a number of key points which intended to renew the ways of approaching the landscape, also covering the subjects of public participation or the diversity of disciplinary articulations — for example, a greater concern was expressed about the places where people live, such as urban and periurban areas; the public should have an active role and responsibility as well as awareness raising, training and education through an enhanced part in participation actions; crossdisciplinary and more diversity on the approaches related to landscape matters are needed. It was from this context that this investigation was developed, proposing a different perspective of analysis between landscape architecture and art, that is: on the one hand, it was intended to address the current challenges related to the public engagement and participation taking into account the long experience of the art practices in participatory projects; on the other hand, it was intended to contribute to a better clarification on how different disciplines such as landscape architecture and art address similar themes and concerns, and how this can contribute to more efficient design practices and diversified collaborations. Thus, different approaches were analyzed and discussed, produced from temporary projects carried out by artists or by different collaborations between art, landscape architecture and other disciplines, in order to contribute not only to more efficient and inclusive design practices, but also to improve engagement processes between the public, the design team and the project. Environmental performance of a portuguese winery

O setor vinícola apresenta grande relevância para a economia nacional, devido à sua elevada capacidade exportadora, contribuindo de forma positiva para o saldo da balança comercial. As preocupações de carácter ambiental e o desenvolvimento sustentável do negócio assumem-se crescentemente como áreas fulcrais para a competitividade das organizações do sector. E neste contexto que surge este estudo, que contempla a avaliação do desempenho ambiental de uma organização de produção de vinhos, com o objetivo de identificar os aspetos ambientais significativos e delinear estratégias e ações que permitam uma melhoria do seu desempenho. No âmbito desta análise aplicaram-se igualmente indicadores de ecoeficiência, contribuindo para o delineamento de objetivos e metas de redução dos consumos de energía, água e matérias-primas e, cumulativamente, reduzir a produção de resíduos, efluentes e ruído. Após a identificação dos aspetos e impactes ambientais e a aplicação de um método para o cálculo do índice de significância, foi possível avaliar os aspetos ambientais significativos da organização, nomeadamente o consumo de energia elétrica, o consumo de água, a utilização de embalagens de vidro e cartão, os efluentes líquidos e a utilização de gases fluorados nos sistemas de refrigeração.
