    Magnetic and magnetorheological properties of nanofiber suspensions

    International audienceIn this work the preparation and characterization of magnetorheological (MR) fluids constituted by CoNi nanofibers (56 nm length, 6.6 nm width) are reported. The properties of these new fluids were characterized by usual techniques (including magnetometry and magnetorheology). The results were compared with those obtained for conventional suspensions constituted by CoNi nanosperes

    Steady shear flow of magnetic fiber suspensions: theory and comparison with experiments

    International audienceThis paper is focused on the rheology of magnetic fiber suspensions in the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the flow. At low Mason numbers, Mn<0.1, the experimental flow curves show a steep initial section corresponding to the inclination and stretching of the gap-spanning aggregates formed upon magnetic field application. At higher Mason numbers, aggregates no longer stick to the walls and the flow curves reach a Bingham regime, with the dynamic yield stress growing with the magnetic field intensity. This yield stress appears to be about three times higher for the fiber suspensions than for the suspensions of spherical particles. Such difference, measured at relatively low magnetic field intensities, H0<30 kA/m, is explained in terms of the enhanced magnetic susceptibility of the aggregates composed of fibers compared to the aggregates composed of spherical particles. For weak magnetic fields, the forces of solid friction between fibers are expected to play a minor role on the stress level of the suspension. In order to confirm these findings, we propose a new theoretical model, taking into account hydrodynamic interactions. The flow curve and the yield stress predictions are in a good agreement with the experimental results for semi-diluted suspensions

    On the effect of wall slip on the determination of the yield stress of magnetorheological fluids

    We studythe effect ofwall slip on themeasuredvalues ofthe yield stress of magnetorheological (MR) fluids. For this aim we used a rheometer provided with parallel-plate geometries of two types, distinguished by having smooth or rough surfaces. We found that wall slip led to the underestimation of the yield stress when measuring geometries with smooth surfaces were used,and that this underestimation was more pronounced for the static than for the dynamic yield stress. Furthermore, we analysed the effect that both irreversible particle aggregation due to colloidal interactions and reversible magnetic field-induced particle aggregation had on the underestimation provoked by wall slip. We found that the higher the degree of aggregation the stronger the underestimation of the yield stress. At low intensity of the applied magnetic field irreversible particle aggregation was dominant and, thus, the underestimation of the yield stress was almost negligible for well-dispersed MR fluids, whereas it was rather pronounced for MR fluids suffering from irreversible aggregation.     Hypothyroidism modifies lipid composition of polymorphonuclear leukocytes

    Thyroid hormones are important regulators of lipid metabolism. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are essential components of innate immune response. Our goal was to determine whether hypothyroidism affects lipid metabolism in PMN cells. Wistar rats were made hypothyroid by administrating 0.1 g/L 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in drinking water during 30 days. Triacylglycerides (TG), cholesterol and phospholipids were determined in PMN and serum by conventional methods. The mRNA expression of LDL receptor (LDL-R), 3hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCoAR), sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP-2), and diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT-2) were quantified by Real-Time PCR. Cellular neutral lipids were identified by Nile red staining. We found hypothyroidism decreases serum TG whereas it increases them in PMN. This result agrees with those observed in Nile red preparations, however DAGT-2 expression was not modified. Cholesterol synthesizing enzyme HMGCoAR mRNA and protein was reduced in PMN of hypothyroid rats. As expected, cholesterol content decreased in the cells although it increased in serum. Hypothyroidism also reduced relative contents of palmitic, stearic, and arachidonic acids, whereas increased the myristic, linoleic acids, and the unsaturation index in PMN. Thus, hypothyroidism modifies PMN lipid composition. These findings would emphasize the importance of new research to elucidate lipid-induced alterations in specific function(s) of PMN.Fil: Coria, Mariela Janet.     Fusarium Mycotoxins and Metabolites that Modulate Their Production

    The genus Fusarium is a group of fungi producing several types of toxins with toxicological effect in both humans and animals. Such fungi are commonly found in soils so it can contaminate various types of crops, preferably cereals, leading to significant economic losses. Relative humidity, storage temperature and various handling in cereales increase the possibility of contamination by Fusarium toxins. Cereals naturally have secondary metabolites that may help attenuate contamination by these toxins, but it is necessary to know strategies and mechanisms that generate inactivation mycotoxins. This chapter reviews relevant information about cereal mycotoxin contamination, as well as the production of cereal secondary metabolites as a strategy to reduce the possibility of mycotoxin contamination

    Influenza-Associated Disseminated Aspergillosis in a 9-Year-Old Girl Requiring ECMO Support

    Nens; Influenza humana; IsavuconazolNiños; Influenza humana; IsavuconazolChildren; Human influenza; IsavuconazoleA previously healthy 9-year-old girl developed fulminant myocarditis due to severe influenza A infection complicated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Twelve days after admission, Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated in tracheal aspirate, and 12 h later she suddenly developed anisocoria. Computed tomography (CT) of the head showed fungal brain lesions. Urgent decompressive craniectomy with lesion drainage was performed; histopathology found hyphae in surgical samples, culture-positive for Aspergillus fumigatus (susceptible to azoles, echinocandins, and amphotericin B). Extension workup showed disseminated aspergillosis. After multiple surgeries and combined antifungal therapy (isavuconazole plus liposomal amphotericin B), her clinical course was favorable. Isavuconazole therapeutic drug monitoring was performed weekly. Extensive immunological study ruled out primary immunodeficiencies. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) follow-up showed a gradual decrease in fungal lesions. Influenza-associated pulmonary aspergillosis is well-recognized in critically ill adult patients, but pediatric data are scant. Clinical features described in adults concur with those of our case. Isavuconazole, an off-label drug in children, was chosen because our patient had severe renal failure. To conclude, influenza-associated pulmonary aspergillosis is uncommon in children admitted to intensive care for severe influenza, but pediatricians should be highly aware of this condition to enable prompt diagnosis and treatment.This work received no external funding

    Cuidado de enfermería y satisfacción en post cesareadas del servicio de gineco obstetricia del Hospital Iquitos César Garayar García, 2016

    La presente tesis, tuvo como objetivo determinar la asociación entre cuidado de enfermería y satisfacción con la atención recibida en post cesareadas atendidas en el servicio de Gíneco Obstetricia del Hospital Iquitos César Garayar García- 2016. El método empleado fue el cuantitativo y el diseño no experimental, transversal y correlacional. La población estuvo conformada por 106 post cesareadas Se trabajó con la muestra de 30 post cesareadas. Se utilizó la técnica de la entrevista y el instrumento fue la Escala de Likert Modificada (Patrocinio- 2013) (Validez 83.3 % y confiabilidad de 81.3%). La prueba estadística inferencial fue el Chi Cuadrado, con α = 0.05 (p ˂0.05) y gl= 1. Los resultados son los siguientes: del 100% (30) post cesareadas el mayor porcentaje con 72% (13) se encuentran insatisfechas debido al cuidado inadecuado de enfermería. Conclusión: al realizar el análisis estadístico para determinar la asociación entre las variables se encontró un X2c = 6.44, para α < 0.05 y un gl=1; permitiendo aceptar la hipótesis de investigación: “Existe asociación entre el cuidado de enfermería y la satisfacción con la atención en post cesareadas atendidas en el servicio de Gineco obstetricia del Hospital Iquitos César Garayar García 2016”, existiendo asociación estadística significativa entre cuidado de enfermería y la satisfacción en la atención en post cesareadas atendidas en dicho nosocomio.Tesis de segunda especialidadT02113TIEF 2 G64 201

    Natural killer (NK) cell-derived extracellular-vesicle shuttled microRNAs control T cell responses.

    Natural killer (NK) cells recognize and kill target cells undergoing different types of stress. NK cells are also capable of modulating immune responses. In particular, they regulate T cell functions. Small RNA next-generation sequencing of resting and activated human NK cells and their secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) led to the identification of a specific repertoire of NK-EV-associated microRNAs and their post-transcriptional modifications signature. Several microRNAs of NK-EVs, namely miR-10b-5p, miR-92a-3p, and miR-155-5p, specifically target molecules involved in Th1 responses. NK-EVs promote the downregulation of GATA3 mRNA in CD4+ T cells and subsequent TBX21 de-repression that leads to Th1 polarization and IFN-γ and IL-2 production. NK-EVs also have an effect on monocyte and moDCs (monocyte-derived dendritic cells) function, driving their activation and increased presentation and costimulatory functions. Nanoparticle-delivered NK-EV microRNAs partially recapitulate NK-EV effects in mice.
