    Do You Have Social Profile? Users And Non-Users Of Social Networking Sites In The Web 2.0

    In light of the increasing importance of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) for both personal and professional relationships, the aim of this work is to contribute to the knowledge framework regarding the interactive behaviour of Internet users, particularly within Web 2.0, describing its evolution from Web 1.0. Moreover, this paper analyses the different behaviours on the Web by people who use or not use SNSs, as well as to determine whether any such differences are significant in order to discover the reasons why these people participate. As results, initial characterization of the users themselves is followed by an analysis of the main differences between users and non-users of these applications. With this information, companies can play an active role in this Social Web by becoming company 2.0 and participating actively in already existing SNSs or creating their own social network service

    The term Web 2.0 was introduced by O’Reilly (2005) as the new stage in the Internet evolution referring to a collection of online applications sharing a number of common characteristics: “The Web as a platform, Harnessing of the Collective Intelligence, Data is the Next Intel Inside, End of the Software Release Cycle, Lightweight Programming Models, Rich User Experiences”. The term Web 2.0 or Social Media refers to applications enabling the creation, editing and dissemination of user-generated content. These applications are one of the main components of the current Internet environment commonly called Web 2.0. The importance and popularity of the Social Media as marketing tools and communication channels is growing and field studies provide evidence that these can strongly affect consumer behavior. An increasing number of studies suggest that corporate interest on the Web 2.0 domain keeps growing and more and more firms are introducing different social media tools into their daily business routines as well as into their marketing strategies. Despite the fact that thousands of corporations are already seriously engaged or experimenting with the Social Media as marketing tools there is also a high amount of retailers that do not use them. The objective of this study is to analyze the reasons why retailers do not use Web 2.0 tools and the main barriers that they consider to not adopt them, comparing with the retailers that use these tools

    Selective production of Dihydroxyacetone and Glyceraldehyde by Photo-assisted Oxidation of Glycerol

    Glycerol is a by-product during biodiesel production and represents a potential low-cost raw material for obtaining high-cost products like Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde (GCD) amongst others. In this work, Fe-Pillared clay (Fe-PILC) was assessed as catalyst of the selective photo-oxidation of glycerol to obtain DHA and GCD at moderate conditions (298 K and atmospheric pressure). This was conducted in a 100 mL Pyrex glass batch reactor where a Pen-Ray lamp of mercury of 5.5 Watts UV light (UVP) was placed at the centre. The Fe-PILC was prepared by ion exchange. The pillaring was confirmed by XRD, and a 17% w/w of Fe was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The active phases were established by XPS and found to be FeO and Fe3O4. The specific surface area of the clay (bentonite), determined by N2 physisorption, increased from 34 m2/g to 227 m2/g and the pore volume increased from 0.058 cm3/g to 0.106 cm3/g. The studied variables were catalyst loading and glycerol initial concentration. An experiment with TiO2 Degussa P25 was also performed as reference. It was found that by adding Fe-PILC to the glycerol oxidation system, selectivity towards DHA or GCD can be tuned. A selectivity towards DHA was found to be 87% with 0.1 g/L of Fe-Pillared after 8 h reaction. The in situ production ofH2O2 was observed and therefore concluded that the glycerol oxidation occurs via a Fenton process, i.e. via free radicals.CONAYCT project 269093 UAEM project 437

    Microenvironmental hCAP-18/LL-37 promotes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma by activating its cancer stem cell compartment

Gut 64.12 (2015): 1921-1935 and which has been published in final form at http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/gutjnl-2014-308935OBJECTIVES: The tumour stroma/microenvironment not only provides structural support for tumour development, but more importantly it provides cues to cancer stem cells (CSCs) that regulate their self-renewal and metastatic potential. This is certainly true for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC), where tumour-associated fibroblasts, pancreatic stellate cells and immune cells create an abundant paracrine niche for CSCs via microenvironment-secreted factors. Thus understanding the role that tumour stroma cells play in PDAC development and CSC biology is of utmost importance. DESIGN: Microarray analyses, tumour microarray immunohistochemical assays, in vitro co-culture experiments, recombinant protein treatment approaches and in vivo intervention studies were performed to understand the role that the immunomodulatory cationic antimicrobial peptide 18/LL-37 (hCAP-18/LL-37) plays in PDAC biology. RESULTS: We found that hCAP-18/LL-37 was strongly expressed in the stroma of advanced primary and secondary PDAC tumours and is secreted by immune cells of the stroma (eg, tumour-associated macrophages) in response to tumour growth factor-β1 and particularly CSC-secreted Nodal/ActivinA. Treatment of pancreatic CSCs with recombinant LL-37 increased pluripotency-associated gene expression, self-renewal, invasion and tumourigenicity via formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2)- and P2X purinoceptor 7 receptor (P2X7R)-dependent mechanisms, which could be reversed by inhibiting these receptors. Importantly, in a genetically engineered mouse model of K-Ras-driven pancreatic tumourigenesis, we also showed that tumour formation was inhibited by either reconstituting these mice with bone marrow from cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (ie, murine homologue of hCAP-18/LL-37) knockout mice or by pharmacologically inhibiting FPR2 and P2X7R.     Atividade física como fator protetor para o extremo baixo peso em idosos assistidos por uma operadora de saúde

    Objetivo: Investigar a influência de fatores relacionados aos aspectos multidimensionais do envelhecimento em um grupo de idosos com baixo peso assistidos pelo setor privado de saúde. Métodos: Estudo transversal conduzido com 243 idosos com índice de massa corpórea <23 kg/m², todos assistidos por uma operadora de planos de saúde, no município de São Paulo, SP, Brasil, alocados em dois grupos: baixo peso e extremo baixo peso. Para a coleta dos dados empregou-se inquérito contendo informações relacionadas aos aspectos multidimensionais do envelhecimento. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos a análise descritiva das variáveis, com posterior análise comparativa através dos testes t Student e Qui-Quadrado ou exato de Fisher, quando necessário. Para variáveis com significância estatística, aplicou-se regressão logística e calculou-se as Odds Ratio, com intervalo de confiança de 95%. Resultados: Observou-se que, a idade avançada (p=0,044), dificuldade de mobilidade (p=0,011) e baixos níveis de atividade física (p=0.021) influenciam significativamente os idosos em estado nutricional de extremo baixo peso. Por meio do modelo de regressão logística, verificou-se que para cada uma hora de atividade física praticada pelos idosos deste grupo, os riscos de evolução para extremo baixo peso diminuem em até 14%. Conclusão: A pratica regular e orientada de atividade física praticada por idosos com algum grau de déficit nutricional é capaz de prevenir e/ou retardar desfechos indesejados em grupos susceptíveis.Objective: Investigate the influence of factors related to multidimensional aspects of aging in a group of elderly assisted by the private health sector. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted with 243 elders with a body mass index <23 kg/m² assisted by a health plan in the city of São Paulo, SP, Brazil, with them being allocated into two groups: low weight and extreme low weight. For data collection, a survey developed by the researchers themselves containing information related to multidimensional aspects of aging was employed. The obtained data were submitted to a descriptive analysis of the variables and a subsequent comparative analysis through Student’s t-distribution, Chi-squared or Fisher’s exact tests, when necessary. For variables with statistical significance, logistic regression was applied and the odds ratio, with a 95% confidence interval, was calculated. Results: It was observed that advanced age (p=0.044), mobility difficulty (p=0.011) and low levels of physical activity (p=0.021) significantly influence the elderly in extremely low weight nutritional status. Moreover, through the logistic regression model, it was found that, for this group, every hour of physical activity practiced by underweight elders, the risks of evolution to an extreme low weight status decrease by up to 14%. Conclusion: The regular and oriented practice of physical activity by the elderly with some degree of nutritional deficit is able to prevent and/or delay unwanted outcomes in susceptible groups

    Multi-Messenger Astronomy with Extremely Large Telescopes

    The field of time-domain astrophysics has entered the era of Multi-messenger Astronomy (MMA). One key science goal for the next decade (and beyond) will be to characterize gravitational wave (GW) and neutrino sources using the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). These studies will have a broad impact across astrophysics, informing our knowledge of the production and enrichment history of the heaviest chemical elements, constrain the dense matter equation of state, provide independent constraints on cosmology, increase our understanding of particle acceleration in shocks and jets, and study the lives of black holes in the universe. Future GW detectors will greatly improve their sensitivity during the coming decade, as will near-infrared telescopes capable of independently finding kilonovae from neutron star mergers. However, the electromagnetic counterparts to high-frequency (LIGO/Virgo band) GW sources will be distant and faint and thus demand ELT capabilities for characterization. ELTs will be important and necessary contributors to an advanced and complete multi-messenger network.Comment: White paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Surve

    Study of the neutron-rich region in the vicinity of 208Pb via multinucleon transfer reactions

    The multinucleon transfer reaction mechanism was employed to populate isotopes around the doubly- magic 208 Pb nucleus. We used an unstable 94 Rb beam on 208 Pb targets of different thickness. Transfer channels were studied via the fragment-γ and γ-γ coincidences, by using MINIBALL γ spectrometer coupled to a particle detector. Gamma transitions associated to the different Pb isotopes, populated by the neutron transfers, are discussed in terms of excitation energy and spin. Fragment angular distributions were extracted, andcompared with the reaction model

    Generation of a mutator parasite to drive resistome discovery in Plasmodium falciparum

    In vitro evolution of drug resistance is a powerful approach for identifying antimalarial targets, however, key obstacles to eliciting resistance are the parasite inoculum size and mutation rate. Here we sought to increase parasite genetic diversity to potentiate resistance selections by editing catalytic residues of Plasmodium falciparum DNA polymerase δ. Mutation accumulation assays reveal a ~5–8 fold elevation in the mutation rate, with an increase of 13–28 fold in drug-pressured lines. Upon challenge with the spiroindolone PfATP4-inhibitor KAE609, high-level resistance is obtained more rapidly and at lower inocula than wild-type parasites. Selections also yield mutants with resistance to an “irresistible” compound, MMV665794 that failed to yield resistance with other strains. We validate mutations in a previously uncharacterised gene, PF3D7_1359900, which we term quinoxaline resistance protein (QRP1), as causal for resistance to MMV665794 and a panel of quinoxaline analogues. The increased genetic repertoire available to this “mutator” parasite can be leveraged to drive P. falciparum resistome discovery

    The OTELO survey: A case study of [O III] lambda 4959,5007 emitters at z=0.83

    Context. The OSIRIS Tunable Filter Emission Line Object (OTELO) survey is a very deep, blind exploration of a selected region of the Extended Groth Strip and is designed for finding emission-line sources (ELSs). The survey design, observations, data reduction, astrometry, and photometry, as well as the correlation with ancillary data used to obtain a final catalogue, including photo-z estimates and a preliminary selection of ELS, were described in a previous contribution. Aims. Here, we aim to determine the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [O III] ELS sample of OTELO as a scientific demonstration of its capabilities, advantages, and complementarity with respect to other surveys. Methods. The selection and analysis procedures of ELS candidates obtained using tunable filter pseudo-spectra are described. We performed simulations in the parameter space of the survey to obtain emission-line detection probabilities. Relevant characteristics of [O III] emitters and the LF ([O III]), including the main selection biases and uncertainties, are presented. Results. From 541 preliminary emission-line source candidates selected around z = 0.8, a total of 184 sources were confirmed as [O III] emitters. Consistent with simulations, the minimum detectable line flux and equivalent width in this ELS sample are ∼5 × 10−19 erg s−1 cm2 and ∼6 Å, respectively. We are able to constrain the faint-end slope (α = −1.03 ± 0.08) of the observed LF ([O III]) at a mean redshift of z = 0.83. This LF reaches values that are approximately ten times lower than those from other surveys. The vast majority (84%) of the morphologically classified [O III] ELSs are disc-like sources, and 87% of this sample is comprised of galaxies with stellar masses of M⋆ <  1010 M⊙
