    Harmonic index and harmonic polynomial on graph operations

    Some years ago, the harmonic polynomial was introduced to study the harmonic topological index. Here, using this polynomial, we obtain several properties of the harmonic index of many classical symmetric operations of graphs: Cartesian product, corona product, join, Cartesian sum and lexicographic product. Some upper and lower bounds for the harmonic indices of these operations of graphs, in terms of related indices, are derived from known bounds on the integral of a product on nonnegative convex functions.     A Variational Approach for Designing Infinite Impulse Response Filters With Time-Varying Parameters

    Filter design with short transient state is a problem encountered in many fields of circuits, systems, and signal processing. In this paper, a novel low-pass filter design technique with time-varying parameters is introduced in order to minimize the rise-time parameter. Through the use of calculus of variations a method is developed to obtain the optimal closed-form expression for adjusting the parameters. In this context, two cases are addressed: the ideal case in which infinite bandwidth is required and a solution of finite bandwidth. The latter is obtained by means of a proper constraint formulation in the frequency domain. The proposed filter achieves the shortest rise time and allows better preservation of the edge shape in comparison with other existing filtering methods. The analysis, synthesis, and performance of the proposed system are discussed and illustrated with the aid of simulations

    The stability of autonomous dynamical switched systems is analyzed by means of multiple Lyapunov functions. The stability theorems given in this paper have finite number of conditions to check. It is shown that linear functions can be used as Lyapunov functions. An example of an exponentially asymptotically stable switched system formed by four unstable systems is also given

    The impact of a large object with Jupiter in July 2009

    On 2009 July 19, we observed a single, large impact on Jupiter at a planetocentric latitude of 55^{\circ}S. This and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) impacts on Jupiter in 1994 are the only planetary-scale impacts ever observed. The 2009 impact had an entry trajectory opposite and with a lower incidence angle than that of SL9. Comparison of the initial aerosol cloud debris properties, spanning 4,800 km east-west and 2,500 km north-south, with those produced by the SL9 fragments, and dynamical calculations of pre-impact orbit, indicate that the impactor was most probably an icy body with a size of 0.5-1 km. The collision rate of events of this magnitude may be five to ten times more frequent than previously thought. The search for unpredicted impacts, such as the current one, could be best performed in 890-nm and K (2.03-2.36 {\mu}m) filters in strong gaseous absorption, where the high-altitude aerosols are more reflective than Jupiter's primary cloud.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Long-term dynamics of somatosensory activity in a stroke model of distal middle cerebral artery oclussion

    A constant challenge in experimental stroke is the use of appropriate tests to identify signs of recovery and adverse effects linked to a particular therapy. In this study, we used a long-term longitudinal approach to examine the functional brain changes associated with cortical infarction in a mouse model induced by permanent ligation of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Sensorimotor function and somatosensory cortical activity were evaluated with fault-foot and forelimb asymmetry tests in combination with somatosensory evoked potentials. The stroke mice exhibited both long-term deficits in the functional tests and impaired responses in the infarcted and intact hemispheres after contralateral and ipsilateral forepaw stimulation. In the infarcted hemisphere, reductions in the amplitudes of evoked responses were detected after contralateral and ipsilateral stimulation. In the intact hemisphere, and similar to cortical stroke patients, a gradual hyperexcitability was observed after contralateral stimulation but no parallel evidence of a response was detected after ipsilateral stimulation. Our results suggest the existence of profound and persistent changes in the somatosensory cortex in this specific mouse cortical stroke model. The study of evoked potentials constitutes a feasible and excellent tool for evaluating the fitness of the somatosensory cortex in relation to functional recovery after preclinical therapeutic intervention

    Modeling the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. II. Disk opacity and star formation in 5 edge-on spirals

    Using tools previously described and applied to the prototype galaxy NGC 891, we model the optical to far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SED) of four additional edge-on spiral galaxies, namely NGC 5907, NGC 4013, UGC 1082 and UGC 2048. Comparing the model predictions with IRAS and, where available, sub-millimeter and millimeter observations, we determine the respective roles of the old and young stellar populations in grain heating. In all cases, the young population dominates, with the contribution of the old stellar population being at most 40%, as previously found for NGC 891. After normalization to the disk area, the massive star-formation rate (SFR) derived using our SED modeling technique, which is primarily sensitive to the non-ionizing ultraviolet output from the young stellar population, lies in the range 7e-4 - 2e-2 M_sun * yr^-1 * kpc^-2. This is consistent with normalized SFRs derived for face-on galaxies of comparable surface gas densities from H_alpha observations. Though the most active star-forming galaxy of the five in absolute terms, NGC 891 is not an exceptional system in terms of its surface density in SFR.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication to A&

    Formation of monopoles and domain walls after brane inflation

    We study cosmological defect formation after brane inflation. The cosmological defects are corresponding to the branes that have less than three spacial dimensions in the uncompactified spacetime. Contrary to the previous arguments, production of monopoles and domain walls are not always negligible.
