Woolly hair nevus: case report and review of literature

Woolly hair nevus consists of a patch of curly and hypopigmented hair that is restricted to an area of the scalp. It is usually benign but it can be associated with other systemic findings. Trichoscopy and dermoscopy may be useful when analyzing this entity. The authors describe a case of woolly hair nevus in a 5-year-old boy and present a review of the literature of woolly hair nevus, including classification, histopathology, associated systemic findings, and the recent described genetic mutations

Aplicativos informáticos para refrigeração industrial : estágio na empresa J&E Hall Limited, Leeds, Reino Unido

O presente relatório de estágio tem como principal função explanar o trabalho desenvolvido na filial da empresa J&E Hall International, situada na cidade de Leeds, Reino Unido. O início do estágio deu-se no dia 7 de Outubro de 2013. Com a chegada à empresa foi requerido o desenvolvimento de programas que tornassem o fluxo de trabalho mais acessível e rápido. O primeiro programa requerido foi o dimensionamento das tubagens para sistemas que utilizassem os seguintes fluidos frigorígenos: Glicol e Amónia. Terminado o desenvolvimento do programa, foi requerido o desenvolvimento de um novo programa que calculasse a Potência Frigorifica de uma instalação frigorífica. Concluído o programa anterior, foi-nos pedido que elaborássemos um novo programa desta vez para o dimensionamento de um depósito para um fluido frigorígeno. Com a conclusão desse programa foi requerido o dimensionamento de válvulas de segurança seguindo a norma EN13136. Por último foi requerido um programa que realizasse as diversas operações de um diagrama psicométrico. De referir que todos os programas foram pedidos para serem desenvolvido no formato Excel, pela empresa. Entre a elaboração dos programas foi pedido que os programas fossem utilizados em projetos da empresa. Os funcionários da empresa ao longo do estágio foram explicando cada passo que realizavam na elaboração de um projeto, o que levou a uma melhor compreensão dos diversos passos a seguir na realização de um projeto. A conclusão do estágio teve lugar no dia 4 de Maio de 2014

Leveraging RISC-V to build an open-source (hardware) OS framework for reconfigurable IoT devices

With the growing interest in RISC-V systems and the endless possi bilities of creating customized hardware architectures, we introduce the first proof of concept (PoC) implementation of ChamelIoT, the first open-source agnostic hardware operating system (OS) frame work for reconfigurable Internet of Things (IoT) low-end devices. At this stage, ChamelIoT, leveraging the Rocket Custom Co-Processor Interface (RoCC), provides hardware acceleration support for thread management and scheduling of three different OSes: RIOT, Zephyr, and FreeRTOS. This paper overviews the overall ChamelIoT archi tecture and describes the implementation details of the current PoC deployment. Our first experiments were carried out on a Xilinx Arty-35T FPGA Evaluation kit and the preliminary results are very promising, showing that the desired agnosticism and flexibility can be achieved with determinism and performance advantages at a reasonable cost of hardware resources

Structural behaviour analysis of Faria Guimarães station

No presente estudo efectua-se a modelação e análise do comportamento estrutural da estação Faria Guimarães, do Metro do Porto. A estação é constituída por um cruzamento oblíquo de duas grandes galerias executadas através do método SEM/NATM. A obra é de elevada complexidade devido aos condicionamentos geométricos da estação e obras adjacentes, à grande heterogeneidade do maciço e à ocupação intensa da superfície. A análise do comportamento estrutural da estação foi realizada recorrendo a modelos numéricos 2D e 3D, bem como a resultados obtidos com a observação da estação.In present paper the modelling and structural behaviour analysis of the Faria Guimarães station, of Metro do Porto, is presented. The station includes the inclined intersection of two large galleries executed through SEM/NATM method. The work is highly complex due to geometric limitations of the station and adjacent works, the heterogeneity of the rock mass and the dense occupation at surface. Operating systems for Internet of Things low-end devices: analysis and benchmarking

In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), billions of wirelessly connected embedded devices rapidly became part of our daily lives. As a key tool for each Internet-enabled object, embedded operating systems (OSes) provide a set of services and abstractions which eases the development and speedups the deployment of IoT solutions at scale. This article starts by discussing the requirements of an IoT-enabled OS, taking into consideration the major concerns when developing solutions at the network edge, followed by a deep comparative analysis and benchmarking on Contiki-NG, RIOT, and Zephyr. Such OSes were considered as the best representative of their class considering the main key-points that best define an OS for resource-constrained IoT devices: low-power consumption, real-time capabilities, security awareness, interoperability, and connectivity. While evaluating each OS under different network conditions, the gathered results revealed distinct behaviors for each OS feature, mainly due to differences in kernel and network stack implementations.This work has been supported by national funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019

Malignant paratesticular mesothelioma

Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis (MTVT) is a rare tumor that usually affects patients after the sixth decade of life. Exposure to asbestos is a known risk factor. Enlargement of the scrotal volume is the most common initial clinical manifestation, and about 15% of cases present metastasis at diagnosis. The treatment relies on surgical resection while the role of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy remains unclear. The prognosis for patients is generally poor, with a lethal outcome in 30% over a 24-month period. The authors report a case of a 62-year-old patient with the diagnosis of MTVT without a history of asbestos exposure. After surgical treatment, metastatic disease ensued. Chemotherapy was initiated, but could not be continued due to marked and fast clinical deterioration. The authors call attention to the difficulty of early diagnosis of MTVT due to a nonspecific clinical picture, the lack of action by the patient when the scrotal enlargement was first noticed, and the lack of tumor markers. Delayed diagnosis is definitely related to unfavorable prognosis

Effects of Pilates-Based Exercise on Life Satisfaction, Physical Self-Concept and Health Status in Adult Women

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Pilates- based mat exercises on life satisfaction, perception of appreciation by other people, perception of physical appearance, perception of functionality, total physical self-concept, and perception of health status in healthy women. A randomized controlled trial was con- ducted in Évora, Portugal, in 2008, in which 62 healthy adult women were randomized to a Pilates-based mat (experimental group) (n D 38, mean age ̇ SD, 41.08 ̇ 6.64 years) or a control group (n D 24, mean age ̇ SD, 40.25 ̇ 7.70 years). Experimen- tal group participants performed the Initial Mat of Body Control Pilates twice per week, 60-minutes per session. Repeated measure- ments were performed at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. No significant differences between the two groups were observed in life satisfaction, perception of appreciation by other people, perception of physical appearance, perception of functionality, total physical self-concept, and perception of health status at three time point measures (baseline, after 3 months, and after 6 months). No sig- nificant differences were observed in the control group over time. The experimental group showed significant improvements between baseline and six months in life satisfaction (p D .04), perception of appreciation by other people (p D .002), perception of physical appearance (p D .001), perception of functionality (p D .01), total physical self-concept (p D .001), perception of health status (p D .013) and between three and six months in life satisfaction (p D .002), perception of appreciation by other people (p D .05), perception of physical appearance (p D .001), perception of func- tionality (p D .02), and total physical self-concept (p D .001). Life satisfaction, perception of appreciation by other people, perception of physical appearance, perception of functionality, total physical self-concept and perception of health status may improve after 6 months of Pilates-based mat exercise

Creep behavior of RC slabs strengthened NSM CFRP laminate strips under different environmental conditions

With the aim of analyzing the long-term deformational performance of concrete elements flexurally strengthened with the near-surface mounted (NSM) technique, an experimental program has been launched using slab specimens submitted to sustained loads under the following environmental conditions: (i) 20ºC temperature and 55% relative humidity; (ii) immersed in water tank at 20ºC with 0% of chlorides; (iii) immersed in water tank at 20ºC with 2.5% of chlorides; (iv) submitted to wet/dry cycles at 20ºC with 2.5% of chlorides. The slabs are continuously monitored in terms of mid-span vertical deflection and strains (in concrete, CFRP laminate strip and steel reinforcements). The present paper summarizes the preliminary results obtained in this ongoing project
