Paragenesis and mineral-chemistry of amazonites of Valença, Northern Portugal

Na região de Valença ocorrem pegmatitos miarolíticos intra e exo-graníticos portadores de amazonites verdes, verdeazuladas e enrubescidas (microclinas róseas). O Pb influencia a cromatização verde e a ocorrência de galena inclusa em amazonite é coerente com este facto. A cor das microclinas róseas resulta de um fenómeno metassomático pós-amazonítico, de enrubescimento, que pode evoluir para epissienitização.In the region of Valença (Northern Portugal) inner and outer granitic pegmatites, include green and blue-green amazonites, and late rose-colored microcline. Pb is the chromophore constituent responsible for the green color and the inclusion of galena in amazonite is consistent with this fact. Heteropterys Tomentosa (a. Juss.) Infusion Counteracts Cyclosporin A Side Effects On The Ventral Prostate.

Cyclosporin A (CsA) is an immunosuppressive drug widely used in treatment of auto-immune diseases or after organ transplants. However, several side effects are commonly associated with CsA long term intake, some regarding to loss of reproductive organ function due to oxidative damage. Considering that phytotherapy is an important tool often used against oxidative stress, we would like to describe the beneficial effects of Heteropterys tomentosa intake to minimize the damage caused by CsA to the ventral prostate tissue of Wistar rats under laboratorial conditions. Thirty adult Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were divided into: control group (water); CsA group (Cyclosporin A); Ht group (H. tomentosa infusion) and CsA + Ht group (CsA and H. tomentosa infusion). Plasmic levels of hepatotoxicity markers, triglycerides, cholesterol and glucose were quantified. The ventral prostate tissue was analyzed under light microscopy, using stereological, morphometrical and immunohistochemical techniques. H. tomentosa did not cause any alterations either of the plasmic parameters or of the ventral prostate structure. CsA caused alterations of GOT, total and indirect bilirubin, cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose levels in the plasma; CsA-treated rats showed alterations of the ventral prostate tissue. There were no alterations regarding the plasma levels of GOT, triglycerides and glucose of CsA + Ht animals. The same group also showed normalization of most of the parameters analyzed on the ventral prostate tissue when compared to the CsA group. The treatments did not alter the pattern of AR expression or the apoptotic index of the ventral prostate epithelium. The results suggest a protective action of the H. tomentosa infusion against the side effects of CsA on the ventral prostate tissue, which could also be observed with plasmic biochemical parameters.133

Melatonin reduces the severity of experimental amoebiasis

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Melatonin has immunomodulatory effects but very little is known about its influence in protozoan infections, such as <it>Entamoeba histolytica</it>, which causes amoebiasis, a disease with significant morbidity and mortality. In this study, we evaluated the effects of exogenous melatonin interference in experimental amoebiasis and on interactions between human blood cells and <it>E. histolytica </it>trophozoites.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The effect of melatonin was investigated in models of experimental amoebiasis in hamsters and rats by evaluating the area of necrosis induced by <it>E. histolytica</it>. The activity of melatonin on the interactions between leukocytes and amoebae was determined by examining leukophagocytosis. For <it>in vitro </it>tests, polymorphonuclear and mononuclear human blood leucocytes were incubated with <it>E. histolytica </it>trophozoites.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The areas of amoebic necrosis were significantly reduced in animals treated with melatonin. Melatonin treatment increased leukophagocytosis but was associated with a greater number of dead amoebae.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that melatonin may play a beneficial role in the control of amoebic lesions, raising the possibility that this drug may be used as an adjuvant in anti-amoebic therapy.</p

Formação continuada de professores: curso de capacitação ou grupo colaborativo?

Este trabalho narra a história de um Grupo Colaborativo de Estudos em Educação Matemática (GCEEM), escrita sob o ponto de vista de seus próprios participantes. A intenção inicial era apenas ter por escrito o registro desta história, para que o tempo não apagasse experiências importantes e significativas da trajetória desse grupo que julgamos diferente de outros que conhecemos, por não possuir vínculo com qualquer instituição de ensino privada ou pública, sem nenhuma remuneração ou dispensa de nossas atividades escolares. Decidimos, então, que cada integrante contaria de que forma o grupo surgiu em sua vida, as contribuições e as mudanças provocadas em sua prática enquanto educador. Como o grupo, desde seu início, em 2005, já possuía a prática de ter memórias (atas), escritas pelos seus próprios participantes, optou-se, também, por revisá-las. Ao escrevermos e analisarmos nossa própria história, (re)visitando as memórias do grupo e as narrativas pessoais, percebemos que além de divulgar nossa experiência para inspirar novos grupos, seria importante obtermos o reconhecimento e a validação da nossa prática pelas políticas públicas como uma valiosa alternativa de formação continuada.&nbsp;Grupos colaborativos, como o nosso, são espaços de reflexões que promovem aperfeiçoamento e mudança de nossas práticas pedagógicas. Il s’agit d’examiner et d’approfondir l’hypothèse selon laquelle non seulement les valeurs laïques, non confessionnelles, de la liberté individuelle (choix, subjectivité, autonomie) et de la nature (vie, sang, science) constituent le noyau cosmologique des sociétés occidentales, comme elles sont critiques pour la définition de l’ethos privé (virginité, contraception, avortement, homosexualité), même dans les situations où l’appartenance à des religions qui suivent des valeurs contraires ou alternatives semble constituer la dimension cruciale de l’identité sociale. Même la formule canonique de ces valeurs dans chaque église semble dépendre fondamentalement du rapport aux valeurs de la liberté et de la nature. Les auteurs s’appuient sur des données de recherche de terrain originale et récente.Based on primary ethnographic research conducted by its authors, this article aims to deepen the hypothesis that contemporary Western societies are not only pervaded by lay, non-denominational, structuring values such as those of individual “freedom” (choice, subjectivity, autonomy, etc.) and “nature” (life, blood, science) but that they play a crucial role in defining key aspects of private ethos (virginity, abortion and homosexuality) and thereby encompass not only the alternatives pursued by the doctrinal and pastoral guidelines of specific religions, but also the differing dispositions of religious adherence found among social subjects.El presente artículo trata de examinar y de profundizar la hipótesis según la cual no sólo los valores laicos, no confesionales, de la libertad individual (elección, subjetividad, autonomía) y de la naturaleza (vida, sangre, ciencia) constituyen el nudo cosmológico de las sociedades occidentales, sino también son críticos para la definición del ethos privado (virginidad, contracepción, aborto, homosexualidad), hasta en las situaciones en las cuales la pertenencia a religiones que siguen valores contrarios o alternativos parece constituir la dimensión crucial de la identidad social. From Compact Discs to Streaming: A Comparison of Eras within the Brazilian Market

The music industry has undergone many changes in the last few decades, notably since vinyl, cassettes and compact discs faded away as streaming platforms took the world by storm. This Digital evolution has made huge volumes of data about music consumption available. Based on such data, we perform cross-era comparisons between Physical and Digital media within the music market in Brazil. First, we build artists' success time series to detect and characterize hot streak periods, defined as high-impact bursts that occur in sequence, in both eras. Then, we identify groups of artists with distinct success levels by applying a cluster analysis based on hot streaks' features. We find the same clusters for both Physical and Digital eras: Spike Hit Artists, Big Hit Artists, and Top Hit Artists. Our results reveal significant changes in the music industry dynamics over the years by identifying the core of each era
