    Adversarially Robust Distillation

    Knowledge distillation is effective for producing small, high-performance neural networks for classification, but these small networks are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. This paper studies how adversarial robustness transfers from teacher to student during knowledge distillation. We find that a large amount of robustness may be inherited by the student even when distilled on only clean images. Second, we introduce Adversarially Robust Distillation (ARD) for distilling robustness onto student networks. In addition to producing small models with high test accuracy like conventional distillation, ARD also passes the superior robustness of large networks onto the student. In our experiments, we find that ARD student models decisively outperform adversarially trained networks of identical architecture in terms of robust accuracy, surpassing state-of-the-art methods on standard robustness benchmarks.     Functional characterization of orbicularis oculi and extraocular muscles

    The orbicularis oculi are the sphincter muscles of the eyelids and are involved in modulating facial expression. They differ from both limb and extraocular muscles (EOMs) in their histology and biochemistry. Weakness of the orbicularis oculi muscles is a feature of neuromuscular disorders affecting the neuromuscular junction, and weakness of facial muscles and ptosis have also been described in patients with mutations in the ryanodine receptor gene. Here, we investigate human orbicularis oculi muscles and find that they are functionally more similar to quadriceps than to EOMs in terms of excitation-contraction coupling components. In particular, they do not express the cardiac isoform of the dihydropyridine receptor, which we find to be highly expressed in EOMs where it is likely responsible for the large depolarization-induced calcium influx. We further show that human orbicularis oculi and EOMs express high levels of utrophin and low levels of dystrophin, whereas quadriceps express dystrophin and low levels of utrophin. The results of this study highlight the notion that myotubes obtained by explanting satellite cells from different muscles are not functionally identical and retain the physiological characteristics of their muscle of origin. Furthermore, our results indicate that sparing of facial and EOMs in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the result of the higher levels of utrophin expression

    Design of catalytic monoliths for closed-cycle carbon dioxide lasers

    Pulsed carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers have many applications in aeronautics, space research, weather monitoring and other areas. Full exploitation of the potential of these lasers in hampered by the dissociation of CO2 that occurs during laser operation. The development of closed-cycle CO2 lasers requires active CO-O2 recombination (CO oxidation) catalyst and design methods for implementation of catalysts in CO2 laser systems. A monolith catalyst section model and associated design computer program, LASCAT, are presented to assist in the design of a monolith catalyst section of a closed cycle CO2 laser system. Using LASCAT,the designer is able to specify a number of system parameters and determine the monolith section performance. Trade-offs between the catalyst activity, catalyst dimensions, monolith dimensions, pressure drop, O2 conversion, and other variables can be explored and adjusted to meet system design specifications. An introduction describes a typical closed-cycle CO2 system, and indicates some advantages of a closed cycle laser system over an open cycle system and some advantages of monolith support over other types of supports. The development and use of a monolith catalyst model is presented. The results of a design study and a discussion of general design rules are given

    Longitudinal change of refraction over at least 5years in 15,000 patients

    Background: To report the natural, longitudinal history of shifts in refractive errors in different age groups in a large western European cohort over at least 5years in the same patients. Methods: The electronic database of a large regional clinic containing 225,000 patients was searched for records of patients with a follow-up of at least 5years, excluding all patients who had received any surgical interventions in any eye. This search retrieved 15,799 patients aged 3months to 79years (median 37.8years) with refractive follow up of at least 5years (mean 8.8years) and no surgical interventions. Differences in spherical equivalents (sum of sphere +1/2 cylinder) and cylinder between first and last visit in the same patients in only the right eye were calculated, and used as the measure of refractive shift. Subsequently differences in change between the right and left eye were also determined. Results: Refractions were found to be mostly stable from 25 to 39years (n = 3,155 right eyes), with 50% of these patients not changing their refraction. In patients aged 20-24 (n = 825 right eyes), only 39% of the refractions remained stable, whereas 49% experienced a myopic shift. In the age group 40-69years (n = 6,694), 40-45% remained stable, with an increase in hyperopic shifts. Eighty-five percent of all patients had bilateral symmetric shifts, and 61% showed stable cylindrical values. Conclusions: This report documents clinical relevant changes in spherical equivalents in all age groups within 5 to 10years in the largest examined European cohort. Refractive surgery patients in particular should be selected accordingly, and be informed about the physiological changes which might still occur during their lifetim

    Children's attentional breadth around their mother : comparing stimulus-driven vs. cognitively controlled processes

    Attentional processes in children are tuned towards their mother. It is unclear whether this is a cognitively controlled or more automatic, stimulus-driven process. Therefore, 172 children (age 9-13) were assigned to either a cognitively controlled or a stimulus-driven task measuring the breadth of their attentional field around mother. Results demonstrated a narrower field around mother in the more stimulus-driven measure. Moreover, only for the latter task, this effect was linked with the interaction between children’s age and self-reported trust in maternal support. More trust was linked with a narrower attentional field around mother in younger children, but with a less narrow field in older children. This resembles the expected age-related shift towards increased autonomy and points at stimulus-driven attentional processes.status: publishe

    Cybersafety: Educating individuals with aphasia or cognitive-communication disorders

    The Internet poses risks, also known as cyberthreats. Everyone is vulnerable to cyberthreats, including individuals with aphasia (IwA) or cognitive-communication disorders (IwCCD). When speech-language pathologists introduce Internet into treatment plans for IwA or IwCCD the ASHA Code of Ethics dictates they “shall fully inform the persons they serve of the nature and possible effects of services rendered and products dispensed”. Yet safe-use products and protocols designed to inform or educate IwA and IwCCD about cybersafety are not reported in the literature. In this project we examine cyberthreats and cybersafety as they affect IwA and IwCCD by1) reviewing literature on cyberthreats; 2) reporting anecdotes from IwA and IwCCD who are Internet users; and 3) proposing strategies to support safer Internet use. We examine information and knowledge needed to create adaptations and scaffolds supporting safer Internet-use for people with language/cognitive-communication disabilities, and propose strategies for teaching cybersafety concepts. Issues drawn from the human-computer interaction (HCI) literature will facilitate discussion of privacy, accessibility, and universal design (Hochheister & Lazar, 2007)
