Mid-IR period-magnitude relations for AGB stars
Asymptotic Giant Branch variables are found to obey period-luminosity
relations in the mid-IR similar to those seen at K_S (2.14 microns), even at 24
microns where emission from circumstellar dust is expected to be dominant.
Their loci in the M, logP diagrams are essentially the same for the LMC and for
NGC6522 in spite of different ages and metallicities. There is no systematic
trend of slope with wavelength. The offsets of the apparent magnitude vs. logP
relations imply a difference between the two fields of 3.8 in distance modulus.
The colours of the variables confirm that a principal period with log P > 1.75
is a necessary condition for detectable mass-loss. At the longest observed
wavelength, 24 microns, many semi-regular variables have dust shells comparable
in luminosity to those around Miras. There is a clear bifurcation in LMC
colour-magnitude diagrams involving 24 micron magnitudes.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The optical-ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies
This paper aims to understand the continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies. By fitting
the single galaxies in the sample of Heckman et al. (1995) with composite
models (shock+ photoionization from the active center), we show that five main
components characterize the SED of the continuum. Shocks play an important role
since they produce a high temperature zone where soft X-rays are emitted.
We show that in the optical-UV range, the slope of the NLR emission
reproduces the observed values, and may be the main component of the
featureless continuum. The presence of star forming regions cannot be excluded
in the circumnuclear region of various Seyfert galaxies. An attempt is made to
find their fingerprints in the observed AGN spectra. Finally, it is
demonstrated that multi-cloud models are necessary to interpret the spectra of

Managing knowledge in the context of sustainable construction
The 21st century has been a growing awareness of the importance of the sustainability agenda. Moreover for construction, it has become increasingly important as clients are pushing for a more sustainable product to complement their organisationsâ own strategic plans. Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainable construction is therefore seen as the application of sustainable practices to the activities of the construction sector. One of the key factors in making construction projects more sustainable is overcoming the obstacles of capturing and managing the knowledge required by project teams to effect such change. Managing this knowledge is key to the construction industry because of the unique characteristics of its projects, i.e. multi-disciplinary teams, dynamic participation of team members, heavy reliance on previous experiences/heuristics, the one-off nature of the projects, tight schedules, limited budget, etc. Initiatives within the industry and academic research are developing mechanisms and tools for managing knowledge in construction firms and projects. Program for refan JT8D engine design, fabrication and test, phase 2
The objective of the JT8D refan program was to design, fabricate, and test certifiable modifications of the JT8D engine which would reduce noise generated by JT8D powered aircraft. This was to be accomplished without affecting reliability and maintainability, at minimum retrofit cost, and with no performance penalty. The mechanical design, engine performance and stability characteristics at sea-level and altitude, and the engine noise characteristics of the test engines are documented. Results confirmed the structural integrity of the JT8D-109. Engine operation was stable throughout the airplane flight envelope. Fuel consumption of the test engines was higher than that required to meet the goal of no airplane performance penalty, but the causes were identified and corrected during a normal pre-certification engine development program. Compared to the baseline JT8D-109 engine, the acoustically treated JT8D-109 engine showed noise reductions of 6 PNdB at takeoff and 11 PNdB at a typical approach power setting
Ultralow noise performance of an 8.4-GHz maser-feedhorn system
A total system noise temperature of 6.6 K was demonstrated with an 8.4-GHz traveling wave maser and feedhorn operating in a cryogenic environment. Both the maser and feedhorn were inserted in the helium cryostat, with the maser operating in the 1.6-K liquid bath and the feedhorn cooled in the helium gas, with a temperature gradient along the horn ranging from the liquid bath temperature at its lower end to room temperature at its top. The ruby maser exhibited 43 dB of gain with a bandwidth of 76 MHz(-3 dB) centered at 8400 MHz. Schwarzschild Atmospheric Processes: A Classical Path to the Quantum
We develop some classical descriptions for processes in the Schwarzschild
string atmosphere. These processes suggest relationships between macroscopic
and microscopic scales. The classical descriptions developed in this essay
highlight the fundamental quantum nature of the Schwarzschild atmospheric

A core genetic module : the Mixed Feedback Loop
The so-called Mixed Feedback Loop (MFL) is a small two-gene network where
protein A regulates the transcription of protein B and the two proteins form a
heterodimer. It has been found to be statistically over-represented in
statistical analyses of gene and protein interaction databases and to lie at
the core of several computer-generated genetic networks. Here, we propose and
mathematically study a model of the MFL and show that, by itself, it can serve
both as a bistable switch and as a clock (an oscillator) depending on kinetic
parameters. The MFL phase diagram as well as a detailed description of the
nonlinear oscillation regime are presented and some biological examples are
discussed. The results emphasize the role of protein interactions in the
function of genetic modules and the usefulness of modelling RNA dynamics

The Nature of the Nuclear H2O Masers of NGC 1068: Reverberation and Evidence for a Rotating Disk Geometry
We report new (1995) Very Large Array observations and (1984 - 1999)
Effelsberg 100m monitoring observations of the 22 GHz H2O maser spectrum of the
Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The sensitive VLA observations provide a
registration of the 22 GHz continuum emission and the location of the maser
spots with an accuracy of ~ 5 mas. Within the monitoring data, we find evidence
that the nuclear masers vary coherently on time-scales of months to years, much
more rapidly than the dynamical time-scale. We argue that the nuclear masers
are responding in reverberation to a central power source, presumably the
central engine. Between October and November 1997, we detected a simultaneous
flare of the blue-shifted and red-shifted satellite maser lines. Reverberation
in a rotating disk naturally explains the simultaneous flaring. There is also
evidence that near-infrared emission from dust grains associated with the maser
disk also responds to the central engine. We present a model in which an X-ray
flare results in both the loss of maser signal in 1990 and the peak of the
near-infrared light curve in 1994. In support of a rotating disk geometry for
the nuclear masers, we find no evidence for centripetal accelerations of the
redshifted nuclear masers; the limits are +/- 0.006 km/s/year, implying that
the masers are located within 2 degrees of the kinematic line-of-nodes. We also
searched for high velocity maser emission like that observed in NGC 4258. In
both VLA and Effelsberg spectra, we detect no high velocity lines between +/-
350 km/s to +/- 850 km/s relative to systemic, arguing that masers only lie
outside a radius of ~ 0.6 pc (1.9 light years) from the central engine
(assuming a distance of 14.4 Mpc).Comment: 62 pages, 19 figure

Children\u27s periodicals are experiencing renewed popularity among today\u27s young readers. Much to the amazement of parents and teachers, children\u27s periodicals are successfully competing with television and other attractions for children\u27s attention (Zuckerman, 1989). More than 100 years ago, periodicals also entertained and taught young people. With the current concern over the illiteracy of today\u27s children and a reported decline in quality in the nation\u27s schools, it seemed appropriate to make a comparison between the readability level of children\u27s periodicals published today and that of similar publications from approximately 100 years ago
