Accounting for field-specific research practices in surveys
Establishing macroscopic effects of macro-level phenomena in science or science policy requires identifying macro-level change and causally ascribing it to the phenomena in question. The standardised survey that obtains data about samples of a larger population are one of the few instruments that can observe macro-level change. However, the utility of standardised surveys in science studies is limited because it is still impossible to include the variation of research practices and epistemic conditions of action under which they occur in survey-based studies. Progress in survey-based research partly depends on developing and empirically operationalising for standardised surveys a theoretically grounded comparative framework for research practices and epistemic conditions of action under which they occur. The aim of this paper is to offer a first step by reviewing epistemic conditions of action identified in qualitative studies, suggesting how they may affect causal relationships studied by surveys, and discussing opportunities to ask standardised questions about them.

Coated heat-insulating glasses
Coated heat-insulating glasses were developed after the first energy crisis at the beginning of the seventies. With these glasses heat insulation in the window area has been improved essentially. Î review will be given on the construction and on the mode of action of these glasses, containing as central element of function a highly transparent coating on the base of tin oxide or a layer system on the base of silver. In the meantime the latter coating has succeeded worldwide because of its better technical values. The manufacture and the difficulties with the processing of this coating are dealt with. Coated heat-insulating glasses with metal filter layer systems on the basis of silver are compatible with today's sheet glass technology and have proved to be reliable as glazing for 8 years
Realtime calibration of the A4 electromagnetic lead fluoride calorimeter
Sufficient energy resolution is the key issue for the calorimetry in particle
and nuclear physics. The calorimeter of the A4 parity violation experiment at
MAMI is a segmented calorimeter where the energy of an event is determined by
summing the signals of neighbouring channels. In this case the precise matching
of the individual modules is crucial to obtain a good energy resolution. We
have developped a calibration procedure for our total absorbing electromagnetic
calorimeter which consists of 1022 lead fluoride (PbF_2) crystals. This
procedure reconstructs the the single-module contributions to the events by
solving a linear system of equations, involving the inversion of a 1022 x
1022-matrix. The system has shown its functionality at beam energies between
300 and 1500 MeV and represents a new and fast method to keep the calorimeter
permanently in a well-calibrated state

Light-triggered CO release from nanoporous non-wovens
The water insoluble and photoactive CO releasing molecule dimanganese decacarbonyl (CORM-1) has been non-covalently embedded into poly(l-lactide-co-d/ l-lactide) fibers via electrospinning to enable bioavailability and water accessibility of CORM-1. SEM images of the resulting hybrid non-wovens reveal a nanoporous fiber morphology. Slight CO release from the CORM-1 in the electrospinning process induces nanoporosity. IR spectra show the same set of carbonyl bands for the CORM-1 precursor and the non-woven. When the material was exposed to light (365-480 nm), CO release from the incorporated CORM-1 was measured via heterogeneous myoglobin assay, a portable CO electrode and an IR gas cuvette. The CO release rate was wavelength dependent. Irradiation at 365 nm resulted in four times faster release than at 480 nm. 3.4 Îźmol of CO per mg non-woven can be generated. Mouse fibroblast 3T3 cells were used to show that the hybrid material is non-toxic in the darkness and strongly photocytotoxic when light is applied
Future Challenges in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Understanding Catalysts under Dynamic Reaction Conditions
In the future, (electro-)chemical catalysts will have to be more tolerant towards a varying supply of energy and raw materials. This is mainly due to the fluctuating nature of renewable energies. For example, power-to-chemical processes require a shift from steady-state operation towards operation under dynamic reaction conditions. This brings along a number of demands for the design of both catalysts and reactors, because it is well-known that the structure of catalysts is very dynamic. However, in-depth studies of catalysts and catalytic reactors under such transient conditions have only started recently. This requires studies and advances in the fields of 1)â
operando spectroscopy including time-resolved methods, 2)â
theory with predictive quality, 3)â
kinetic modelling, 4)â
design of catalysts by appropriate preparation concepts, and 5)â
novel/modular reactor designs. An intensive exchange between these scientific disciplines will enable a substantial gain of fundamental knowledge which is urgently required. This concept article highlights recent developments, challenges, and future directions for understanding catalysts under dynamic reaction conditions
Identifying Overlapping and Hierarchical Thematic Structures in Networks of Scholarly Papers: A Comparison of Three Approaches
We implemented three recently proposed approaches to the identification of
overlapping and hierarchical substructures in graphs and applied the
corresponding algorithms to a network of 492 information-science papers coupled
via their cited sources. The thematic substructures obtained and overlaps
produced by the three hierarchical cluster algorithms were compared to a
content-based categorisation, which we based on the interpretation of titles
and keywords. We defined sets of papers dealing with three topics located on
different levels of aggregation: h-index, webometrics, and bibliometrics. We
identified these topics with branches in the dendrograms produced by the three
cluster algorithms and compared the overlapping topics they detected with one
another and with the three pre-defined paper sets. We discuss the advantages
and drawbacks of applying the three approaches to paper networks in research

A common approach for absolute quantification of short chain CoA thioesters in prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes
Background
Thioesters of coenzyme A participate in 5% of all enzymatic reactions. In microbial cell factories, they function as building blocks for products of recognized commercial value, including natural products such as polyketides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, biofuels, and biopolymers. A core spectrum of approximately 5â10 short chain thioesters is present in many microbes, as inferred from their genomic repertoire. The relevance of these metabolites explains the high interest to trace and quantify them in microbial cells.
Results
Here, we describe a common workflow for extraction and absolute quantification of short chain CoA thioesters in different gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and eukaryotic yeast, i.e. Corynebacterium glutamicum, Streptomyces albus, Pseudomonas putida, and Yarrowia lipolytica. The approach assessed intracellular CoA thioesters down to the picomolar level and exhibited high precision and reproducibility for all microbes, as shown by principal component analysis. Furthermore, it provided interesting insights into microbial CoA metabolism. A succinyl-CoA synthase defective mutant of C. glutamicum exhibited an unaffected level of succinyl-CoA that indicated a complete compensation by the L-lysine pathway to bypass the disrupted TCA cycle. Methylmalonyl-CoA, an important building block of high-value polyketides, was identified as dominant CoA thioester in the actinomycete S. albus. The microbe revealed a more than 10,000-fold difference in the abundance of intracellular CoA thioesters. A recombinant strain of S. albus, which produced different derivatives of the antituberculosis polyketide pamamycin, revealed a significant depletion of CoA thioesters of the ethylmalonyl CoA pathway, influencing product level and spectrum.
Conclusions
The high relevance of short chain CoA thioesters to synthetize industrial products and the interesting insights gained from the examples shown in this work, suggest analyzing these metabolites in microbial cell factories more routinely than done so far. Due to its broad application range, the developed approach appears useful to be applied this purpose. Hereby, the possibility to use one single protocol promises to facilitate automatized efforts, which rely on standardized workflows
Measurement of the Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Proton Scattering and the Inelastic Contribution to the Imaginary Part of the Two-Photon Exchange Amplitude
We report on a measurement of the asymmetry in the scattering of transversely
polarized electrons off unpolarized protons, A, at two Q values of
\qsquaredaveragedlow (GeV/c) and \qsquaredaveragedhighII (GeV/c) and a
scattering angle of . The measured transverse
asymmetries are A(Q = \qsquaredaveragedlow (GeV/c)) =
(\experimentalasymmetry alulowcorr \statisticalerrorlow
\combinedsyspolerrorlowalucor) 10 and
A(Q = \qsquaredaveragedhighII (GeV/c)) = (\experimentalasymme
tryaluhighcorr \statisticalerrorhigh
\combinedsyspolerrorhighalucor) 10. The first
errors denotes the statistical error and the second the systematic
uncertainties. A arises from the imaginary part of the two-photon
exchange amplitude and is zero in the one-photon exchange approximation. From
comparison with theoretical estimates of A we conclude that
N-intermediate states give a substantial contribution to the imaginary
part of the two-photon amplitude. The contribution from the ground state proton
to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange can be neglected. There is no
obvious reason why this should be different for the real part of the two-photon
amplitude, which enters into the radiative corrections for the Rosenbluth
