Pairwise hydrodynamic interactions and diffusion in a vesicle suspension
The hydrodynamic interaction of two deformable vesicles in shear flow induces
a net displacement, in most cases an increase of their distance in the
transverse direction. The statistical average of these interactions leads to
shear-induced diffusion in the suspension, both at the level of individual
particles which experience a random walk made of successive interactions, and
at the level of suspension where a non-linear down-gradient diffusion takes
place, an important ingredient in the structuring of suspension flows. We make
an experimental and computational study of the interaction of a pair of lipid
vesicles in shear flow by varying physical parameters, and investigate the
decay of the net lateral displacement with the distance between the streamlines
on which the vesicles are initially located. This decay and its dependency upon
vesicle properties can be accounted for by a simple model based on the well
established law for the lateral drift of a vesicle in the vicinity of a wall.
In the semi-dilute regime, a determination of self-diffusion coefficients is
presented
Fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 single nucleotide polymorphism Gly388Arg in head and neck carcinomas
BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is considered to be a progressive disease resulting from alterations in multiple genes regulating cell proliferation and differentiation like receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and members of the fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR)-family. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Arg388 of the FGFR4 is associated with a reduced overall survival in patients with cancers of various types. We speculate that FGFR4 expression and SNP is associated with worse survival in patients with HSNCC. AIM To investigate the potential clinical significance of FGFR4 Arg388 in the context of tumors arising in HNSCC, a comprehensive analysis of FGFR4 receptor expression and genotype in tumor tissues and correlated results with patients' clinical data in a large cohort of patients with HNSCC was conducted. METHODS Surgical specimens from 284 patients with HNSCC were retrieved from the Institute of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Germany. Specimens were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The expression of FGFR4 was analyzed in 284 surgical specimens of HNSCC using immunohistochemstry. FGFR4 polymorphism was detected by PCR-RFLP. Patients' clinical data with a minimum follow-up of 5 syears were statistically evaluated with a special emphasis on survival analysis employing Kaplan-Meier estimator and Cox regression analysis. RESULTS Concerning the invasive tumor areas the intensity of the FGFR4 expression was evaluated in a four-grade system: no expression, low expression, intermediate and high expression. FGFR4 expression was scored as "high" (+++) in 74 (26%), "intermediate" (++) in 103 (36.3%), and "low" (+) in 107 (36.7%) cases. Analyzing the FGFR4 mutation it was found in 96 tumors (33.8%), 84 of them (29.6%) having a heterozygous and 12 (4.2%) homozygous mutated Arg388 allele. The overall frequency concerning the mutant alleles demonstrated 65% vs 34% mutated alleles in general. FGFR4 Arg388 was significantly associated with advanced tumor stage (P < 0.004), local metastasis (P < 0.0001) and reduced disease-free survival (P < 0.01). Furthermore, increased expression of FGFR4 correlated significantly with worse overall survival (P < 0.003). CONCLUSION In conclusion, the FGFR4 Arg388 genotype and protein expression of FGFR4 impacts tumor progression in patients with HNSCC and may present a useful target within a multimodal therapeutic intervention
Automatic flight control requirements for transition flight phases when converting long endurance fixed wing UAV to VTOL aircraft
This paper reviews the 2 most critical flight phases for a Long Endurance Engine Powered Fixed-Wing Hybrid UAV - the transition from hover to forward flight and visa-versa. These phases of flight are necessary as the consequences of replacing the unsuitable horizontal take-off and landing ability with the more convenient vertical take-off and landing capability. After a brief description on the flight profile and a proposal for the hybrid configuration, the paper suggests 3 strategies to enable the hybrid fixed-wing UAV to transition from hover to forward flight and 1 strategy to transition from forward flight to hover. These strategies present themselves as part of the fundamental requirements for the onboard automatic flight control system responsible to regulate these 2 flight phases
Studi Ketoksikan Dinoflagelata Spesies Prorocentrum Minimum (Dinophyceae) Schiller (Pavillard)
This study was carried out to determine the toxicity of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum species that formed massive blooms in Lido Beach, Johor Bahru in July 2002. Clone cultures were established in ES-DK medium at 26o C under a 14:10 hour light dark cycle. Species toxicity was determined by intra peritoneal (i.p) injection of culture extract into mice. Cultured cell extracts were toxic to mice. The major symptoms were muscular paralysis and diarrhea. However no mouse mortality was observed even after 13 hours. Extracts of cultured cells were also hemolytic on rabbit red blood cells. Backaction in metasurface etalons
We consider the response of etalons created by a combination of a
conventional mirror and a metasurface, composed of a periodic lattice of metal
scatterers with a resonant response. This geometry has been used previously for
perfect absorption, in so-called Salisbury screens, and for hybridization of
localized plasmons with Fabry-Perot resonances. The particular aspect we
address is if one can assume an environment-independent reflectivity for the
metasurface when calculating the reflectivity of the composite system, as in a
standard Fabry-Perot analysis, or whether the fact that the metasurface
interacts with its own mirror image renormalizes its response. Using lattice
sum theory, we take into account all possible retarded dipole-dipole
interactions of scatterers in the metasurface amongst each other, and through
the mirror. We show that while a layer-by-layer Fabry-Perot formalism captures
the main qualitative features of metasurface etalons, in fact the mirror
modifies both the polarizability and reflectivity of the metasurface in a
fashion that is akin to Drexhage's modification of the radiative properties of
a single dipole.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Phylogeny of sea cucumber (echinodermata: holothuroidea) as inferred from 16s mitochondrial rRNa gene sequences
This study aimed to determine phylogenetic relationship between and among selected species of sea cucumbers
(Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) using 16S mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Phylogenetic analyses of 37
partial sequences of 16S mitochondrial rRNA gene using three main methods namely neighbour joining (NJ), maximum
parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) showed the presence of five main genera of sea cucumbers: Molpadia
from order Molpadiida and four genera of order Aspidochirotida namely Holothuria, Stichopus, Bohadschia and
Actinopyga. All of the 17 species obtained from Malaysia distributed among the main genera except within Actinopyga.
Interestingly, Holothuria excellens was out of Holothuria group causing Holothuria to be paraphyletic. High bootstrap
value and consistent clustering made Molpadia, Stichopus, Bohadschia and Actinopyga monophyletic. The relationship
of Actinopyga with the other genera was unclarified and Stichopus was sister to Molpadia. The latter finding caused
the resolution at order level unclear. The pairwise genetic distance calculated using Kimura 2-parameter model further
supported and verified findings from the phylogenetic trees. Further studies with more samples and different mitochondrial
DNA genes need to be done to get a better view and verification on the molecular phylogeny of sea cucumber
