Cannabinoid Control of Olfactory Processes: The Where Matters

    Get PDF
Olfaction has a direct influence on behavior and cognitive processes. There are different neuromodulatory systems in olfactory circuits that control the sensory information flowing through the rest of the brain. The presence of the cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor, (the main cannabinoid receptor in the brain), has been shown for more than 20 years in different brain olfactory areas. However, only over the last decade have we started to know the specific cellular mechanisms that link cannabinoid signaling to olfactory processing and the control of behavior. In this review, we aim to summarize and discuss our current knowledge about the presence of CB1 receptors, and the function of the endocannabinoid system in the regulation of different olfactory brain circuits and related behaviors. This research was funded by Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale (FRM, FDT20170436845) (to G.T.); The Basque Government (ITI230-19), Red de Trastornos Adictivos, Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISC-III) and European Regional Development Funds-European Union (ERDF-EU; grant RD16/0017/0012), MINECO/FEDER, UE (SAF2015-65034-R) (to P.G.); EU–FP7 (PAINCAGE, HEALTH-603191), European Research Council (Endofood, ERC–2010–StG–260515; CannaPreg, ERC-2014-PoC-640923, Micabra) (to G.M.); Ikerbasque (The Basque Foundation for Science) and MINECO (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad) PGC2018-093990-A-I00 (to E.S.-G.)

    Get PDF
This project addresses the efficient management of solid waste through the implementation of a real-time remote monitoring system. Currently, garbage collection is carried out statically, resulting in resource wastage when containers have low content and environmental issues when they overflow. The proposal involves using LoRa technology to send small amounts of data about the garbage level in the containers. This system will allow monitoring and analyzing the status of the containers in real-time. The key advantage of this solution is its ability to operate autonomously, without relying on the electrical grid, and at a low cost. The collected information will be used to optimize the collection route, avoiding fuel and labor waste when containers have low content and preventing overflow that pollutes the environment when they are too full. In summary, the proposal aims to implement an efficient and cost-effective remote monitoring system for waste containers, using LoRa technology to enhance solid waste management and contribute to environmental preservation.Tesi

Atypical presentation of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis: Two case reports

    Get PDF
Background: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by severe neurological and psychiatric symptoms and a difficult diagnosis. The disease is often secondary to a neoplastic lesion, seldom diagnosed years later. Psychiatric symptoms are prevalent in adults; neurologic symptoms are more evident in children, who typically present primarily with neurological symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, the association with juvenile idiopathic arthritis has not been described. Case presentation: We report the cases of two caucasian girls with an atypical presentation. The first patient was an 8-year-old girl with normal psychomotor development. Over a 4-month period she developed behavioral problems, speech impairment, and deterioration in academic skills. Within 8 months from the onset of symptoms, choreic movements gradually appeared. Hematological, neuroradiological, and neurophysiological examinations were negative; however, her symptoms worsened and treatment with prednisone was started. Although her choreic movements improved within 1 month, her neuropsychological and behavioral symptoms continued. Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid and in blood were detected. Therapy with intravenously administered immunoglobulins was administered, without improvement of symptoms. After 2 months of steroid treatment, she suddenly started to pronounce some words with a progressive improvement in language and behavior. The second patient was a 14-year-old girl with classic anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis, treated successfully with intravenously administered immunoglobulins and methylprednisolone, followed by orally administered prednisone, who developed chronic arthritis of the hip. The arthritis was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and associated to antinuclear antigen antibody positivity. One year after the encephalitis presentation, an ovarian cystic mass was identified as a teratoma. The surgical resection of the mass was followed by the resolution of the psychotic spectrum and arthritis. Conclusions: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis in pediatric patients can present initially with neuropsychological and behavioral symptoms. In the literature, the association of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis with juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not yet described: to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported. The link to a neoplastic lesion can explain the favorable course of encephalitis and arthritis, after the surgical resection of the mass. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the patient's outcome

Potential use of human adipose mesenchymal stromal cells for intervertebral disc regeneration: a preliminary study on biglycan-deficient murine model of chronic disc degeneration

INTRODUCTION: Biglycan is an important proteoglycan of the extracellular matrix of intervertebral disc (IVD), and its decrease with aging has been correlated with IVD degeneration. Biglycan deficient (Bgn(−/0)) mice lack this protein and undergo spontaneous IVD degeneration with aging, thus representing a valuable in vivo model for preliminary studies on therapies for human progressive IVD degeneration. The purpose of the present study was to assess the possible beneficial effects of adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) implants in the Bgn(−/0) mouse model. METHODS: To evaluate ADSC implant efficacy, Bgn(−/0) mice were intradiscally (L1-L2) injected with 8x10(4) ADSCs at 16 months old, when mice exhibit severe and complete IVD degeneration, evident on both 7Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (7TMRI) and histology. Placebo and ADSCs treated Bgn(−/0) mice were assessed by 7TMRI analysis up to 12 weeks post-transplantation. Mice were then sacrificed and implanted discs were analyzed by histology and immunohistochemistry for the presence of human cells and for the expression of biglycan and aggrecan in the IVD area. RESULTS: After in vivo treatment, 7TMRI revealed evident increase in signal intensity within the discs of mice that received ADSCs, while placebo treatment did not show any variation. Ultrastructural analyses demonstrated that human ADSC survival occurred in the injected discs up to 12 weeks after implant. These cells acquired a positive expression for biglycan, and this proteoglycan was specifically localized in human cells. Moreover, ADSC treatment resulted in a significant increase of aggrecan tissue levels. CONCLUSION: Overall, this work demonstrates that ADSC implant into degenerated disc of Bgn(−/0) mice ameliorates disc damage, promotes new expression of biglycan and increased levels of aggrecan. This suggests a potential benefit of ADSC implant in the treatment of chronic degenerative disc disease and prompts further studies in this field
