    Solitary wave complexes in two-component mixture condensates

    Axisymmetric three-dimensional solitary waves in uniform two-component mixture Bose-Einstein condensates are obtained as solutions of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with equal intracomponent but varying intercomponent interaction strengths. Several families of solitary wave complexes are found: (1) vortex rings of various radii in each of the components, (2) a vortex ring in one component coupled to a rarefaction solitary wave of the other component, (3) two coupled rarefaction waves, (4) either a vortex ring or a rarefaction pulse coupled to a localised disturbance of a very low momentum. The continuous families of such waves are shown in the momentum-energy plane for various values of the interaction strengths and the relative differences between the chemical potentials of two components. Solitary wave formation, their stability and solitary wave complexes in two-dimensions are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 table

    The algebra of Wilson-'t Hooft operators

    We study the Operator Product Expansion of Wilson-'t Hooft operators in a twisted N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge group G. The Montonen-Olive duality puts strong constraints on the OPE and in the case G=SU(2) completely determines it. From the mathematical point of view, the Montonen-Olive duality predicts the L^2 Dolbeault cohomology of certain equivariant vector bundles on Schubert cells in the affine Grassmannian. We verify some of these predictions. We also make some general observations about higher categories and defects in Topological Field Theories.Comment: 55 pages, late

    Optomechanical manipulation with hyperbolic metasurfaces

    Auxiliary nanostructures introduce additional flexibility into optomechanical manipulation schemes. Metamaterials and metasurfaces capable to control electromagnetic interactions at the near-field regions are especially beneficial for achieving improved spatial localization of particles, reducing laser powers required for trapping, and for tailoring directivity of optical forces. Here, optical forces acting on small particles situated next to anisotropic substrates, are investigated. A special class of hyperbolic metasurfaces is considered in details and is shown to be beneficial for achieving strong optical pulling forces in a broad spectral range. Spectral decomposition of the Green functions enables identifying contributions of different interaction channels and underlines the importance of the hyperbolic dispersion regime, which plays the key role in optomechanical interactions. Homogenised model of the hyperbolic metasurface is compared to its metal-dielectric multilayer realizations and is shown to predict the optomechanical behaviour under certain conditions related to composition of the top layer of the structure and its periodicity. Optomechanical metasurfaces open a venue for future fundamental investigations and a range of practical applications, where accurate control over mechanical motion of small objects is required

    Dissipative dynamics of superfluid vortices at non-zero temperatures

    We consider the evolution and dissipation of vortex rings in a condensate at non-zero temperature, in the context of the classical field approximation, based on the defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The temperature in such a system is fully determined by the total number density and the number density of the condensate. A vortex ring is introduced into a condensate in a state of thermal equilibrium, and interacts with non-condensed particles. These interactions lead to a gradual decrease in the vortex line density, until the vortex ring completely disappears. We show that the square of the vortex line length changes linearly with time, and obtain the corresponding universal decay law. We relate this to mutual friction coefficients in the fundamental equation of vortex motion in superfluids.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Pade approximations of solitary wave solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

    Pade approximants are used to find approximate vortex solutions of any winding number in the context of Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a uniform condensate and condensates with axisymmetric trapping potentials. Rational function and generalised rational function approximations of axisymmetric solitary waves of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are obtained in two and three dimensions. These approximations are used to establish a new mechanism of vortex nucleation as a result of solitary wave interactions.Comment: In press by Journal of Physics: Mathematics and Genera
