The new regulatory map of domestic work in Spain. Political-legal constraints and material constraints concerning a precarious and feminized sector

    Get PDF
The text analyses the lights and shadows of the new Spanish regulation on domestic work in the context of the so-called «care crisis». To this end, it looks into two types of constraints that have influenced the 2022 reform: international legal and social-political constraints, where the self-organization of women workers in the sector stands out. The study pays attention to their demands, in dialogue with specialists and institutions, in order to accurately identify the problems faced by the reform

The inequality defining our times compels to reconsider the question of what kind of legitimacy makes possible to sustain such an unfair world and why this is not enough to give rise to an organized response to dissatisfaction. Here we contend that such legitimacy is made up by an accumulation of elements, prominent among which are the politics of fear. The result is a widespread imposition of neo-liberal policies oriented towards the same goal. We can see this in the case of European countries hit by the debt as well as in the more recent case of Brazil, an example of what someone has already called «soft coups».La desigualdad que define nuestro tiempo obliga a reconsiderar la cuestión de qué tipo de legitimidad es la que permite sostener un mundo tan injusto y cómo es posible que éste no alumbre una respuesta organizada a la insatisfacción.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Exploring genetic diversity and quality traits in a collection of onion (Allium cepa L) landraces from North-West Spain

    Get PDF
Seventeen onion landraces from North-West Spain were evaluated using microsatellites markers. Eleven polymorphic markers identified 32 alleles in the whole collection, with an average of 2.9 alleles per locus. High values of observed (mean of 0.45) and expected heterozigosity (mean of 0.51) were detected for the majority of loci. Wright’s fixation index confirmed an excess of heterozygotes and a low level of inbreeding within the collection. Multivariate analyses revealed that Oimbra was the most distinctive genotype. The remaining 16 onion genotypes were in part assorted according to some morphological traits of bulbs. Pungency and solid soluble content highly varied among landraces and bulbs. Five landraces were classified as sweet, whereas 9 possessed medium pungency and 3 were recorded as pungent. This onion collection represents a useful source of genetic heterogeneity that might be exploited in breeding programs for the generation of new onion varieties that satisfy consumer demandsPublishe

Roles of Proteins Containing Immunoglobulin-Like Domains in the Conjugation of Bacterial Plasmids

Transmission of a plasmid from one bacterial cell to another, in several instances, underlies the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. The process requires well-characterized enzymatic machinery that facilitates cell-to-cell contact and the transfer of the plasmid

Expression of a novel class of bacterial Ig-like proteins is required for IncHI plasmid conjugation

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently one of the most important challenges to the treatment of bacterial infections. A critical issue to combat AMR is to restrict its spread. In several instances, bacterial plasmids are involved in the global spread of AMR. Plasmids belonging to the incompatibility group (Inc)HI are widespread in Enterobacteriaceae and most of them express multiple antibiotic resistance determinants. They play a relevant role in the recent spread of colistin resistance. We present in this report novel findings regarding IncHI plasmid conjugation. Conjugative transfer in liquid medium of an IncHI plasmid requires expression of a plasmid-encoded, large-molecular-mass protein that contains an Ig-like domain. The protein, termed RSP, is encoded by a gene (ORF R0009) that maps in the Tra2 region of the IncHI1 R27 plasmid. The RSP protein is exported outside the cell by using the plasmid-encoded type IV secretion system that is also used for its transmission to new cells. Expression of the protein reduces cell motility and enables plasmid conjugation. Flagella are one of the cellular targets of the RSP protein. The RSP protein is required for a high rate of plasmid transfer in both flagellated and nonflagellated Salmonella cells. This effect suggests that RSP interacts with other cellular structures as well as with flagella. These unidentified interactions must facilitate mating pair formation and, hence, facilitate IncHI plasmid conjugation. Due to its location on the outer surfaces of the bacterial cell, targeting the RSP protein could be a means of controlling IncHI plasmid conjugation in natural environments or of combatting infections caused by AMR enterobacteria that harbor IncHI plasmids
