Dilatation of Lateral Ventricles with Brain Volumes in Infants with 3D Transfontanelle US
Ultrasound (US) can be used to assess brain development in newborns, as MRI
is challenging due to immobilization issues, and may require sedation.
Dilatation of the lateral ventricles in the brain is a risk factor for poorer
neurodevelopment outcomes in infants. Hence, 3D US has the ability to assess
the volume of the lateral ventricles similar to clinically standard MRI, but
manual segmentation is time consuming. The objective of this study is to
develop an approach quantifying the ratio of lateral ventricular dilatation
with respect to total brain volume using 3D US, which can assess the severity
of macrocephaly. Automatic segmentation of the lateral ventricles is achieved
with a multi-atlas deformable registration approach using locally linear
correlation metrics for US-MRI fusion, followed by a refinement step using
deformable mesh models. Total brain volume is estimated using a 3D ellipsoid
modeling approach. Validation was performed on a cohort of 12 infants, ranging
from 2 to 8.5 months old, where 3D US and MRI were used to compare brain
volumes and segmented lateral ventricles. Automatically extracted volumes from
3D US show a high correlation and no statistically significant difference when
compared to ground truth measurements. Differences in volume ratios was 6.0 +/-
4.8% compared to MRI, while lateral ventricular segmentation yielded a mean
Dice coefficient of 70.8 +/- 3.6% and a mean absolute distance (MAD) of 0.88
+/- 0.2mm, demonstrating the clinical benefit of this tool in paediatric
ultrasound
Solving the subset-sum problem with a light-based device
We propose a special computational device which uses light rays for solving
the subset-sum problem. The device has a graph-like representation and the
light is traversing it by following the routes given by the connections between
nodes. The nodes are connected by arcs in a special way which lets us to
generate all possible subsets of the given set. To each arc we assign either a
number from the given set or a predefined constant. When the light is passing
through an arc it is delayed by the amount of time indicated by the number
placed in that arc. At the destination node we will check if there is a ray
whose total delay is equal to the target value of the subset sum problem (plus

Classical Effective Field Theory for Weak Ultra Relativistic Scattering
Inspired by the problem of Planckian scattering we describe a classical
effective field theory for weak ultra relativistic scattering in which field
propagation is instantaneous and transverse and the particles' equations of
motion localize to the instant of passing. An analogy with the non-relativistic
(post-Newtonian) approximation is stressed. The small parameter is identified
and power counting rules are established. The theory is applied to reproduce
the leading scattering angle for either a scalar interaction field or
electro-magnetic or gravitational; to compute some subleading corrections,
including the interaction duration; and to allow for non-zero masses. For the
gravitational case we present an appropriate decomposition of the gravitational
field onto the transverse plane together with its whole non-linear action. On
the way we touch upon the relation with the eikonal approximation, some
evidence for censorship of quantum gravity, and an algebraic ring structure on

Radioactive 26Al and massive stars in the Galaxy
Gamma-rays from radioactive 26Al (half life ~7.2 10^5 yr) provide a
'snapshot' view of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The Galaxy is
relatively transparent to such gamma-rays, and emission has been found
concentrated along the plane of the Galaxy. This led to the conclusion1 that
massive stars throughout the Galaxy dominate the production of 26Al. On the
other hand, meteoritic data show locally-produced 26Al, perhaps from spallation
reactions in the protosolar disk. Furthermore, prominent gamma-ray emission
from the Cygnus region suggests that a substantial fraction of Galactic 26Al
could originate in localized star-forming regions. Here we report high spectral
resolution measurements of 26Al emission at 1808.65 keV, which demonstrate that
the 26Al source regions corotate with the Galaxy, supporting its Galaxy-wide
origin. We determine a present-day equilibrium mass of 2.8 (+/-0.8) M_sol of
26Al. We use this to estimate that the frequency of core collapse (i.e. type
Ib/c and type II) supernovae to be 1.9(+/- 1.1) events per century.Comment: accepted for publication in Nature, 24 pages including Online

Star Formation in Galaxies Along the Hubble Sequence
Observations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies provide vital clues
to the physical nature of the Hubble sequence, and are key probes of the
evolutionary properties of galaxies. The focus of this review is on the broad
patterns in the star formation properties of galaxies along the Hubble
sequence, and their implications for understanding galaxy evolution and the
physical processes that drive the evolution. Star formation in the disks and
nuclear regions of galaxies are reviewed separately, then discussed within a
common interpretive framework. The diagnostic methods used to measure SFRs are
also reviewed, and a self-consistent set of SFR calibrations is presented as an

reading process. In general, conceptualizations of the identification process have emphasized arbitrary sets of distinctive features. However, a richer view of letter processing incorporates principles from the field of type design, including an emphasis on uniformities across letters within a font. The importance of uniformities is supported by a small body of research indicating that consistency of font increases letter identification efficiency. Development Trends of White Matter Connectivity in the First Years of Life
The human brain is organized into a collection of interacting networks with specialized functions to support various cognitive functions. Recent research has reached a consensus that the brain manifests small-world topology, which implicates both global and local efficiency at minimal wiring costs, and also modular organization, which indicates functional segregation and specialization. However, the important questions of how and when the small-world topology and modular organization come into existence remain largely unanswered. Taking a graph theoretic approach, we attempt to shed light on this matter by an in vivo study, using diffusion tensor imaging based fiber tractography, on 39 healthy pediatric subjects with longitudinal data collected at average ages of 2 weeks, 1 year, and 2 years. Our results indicate that the small-world architecture exists at birth with efficiency that increases in later stages of development. In addition, we found that the networks are broad scale in nature, signifying the existence of pivotal connection hubs and resilience of the brain network to random and targeted attacks. We also observed, with development, that the brain network seems to evolve progressively from a local, predominantly proximity based, connectivity pattern to a more distributed, predominantly functional based, connectivity pattern. These observations suggest that the brain in the early years of life has relatively efficient systems that may solve similar information processing problems, but in divergent ways
An exploratory randomised controlled trial of a premises-level intervention to reduce alcohol-related harm including violence in the United Kingdom
<b>Background</b><p></p>
To assess the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial of a licensed premises intervention to reduce severe intoxication and disorder; to establish effect sizes and identify appropriate approaches to the development and maintenance of a rigorous research design and intervention implementation.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b><p></p>
An exploratory two-armed parallel randomised controlled trial with a nested process evaluation. An audit of risk factors and a tailored action plan for high risk premises, with three month follow up audit and feedback. Thirty-two premises that had experienced at least one assault in the year prior to the intervention were recruited, match paired and randomly allocated to control or intervention group. Police violence data and data from a street survey of study premises’ customers, including measures of breath alcohol concentration and surveyor rated customer intoxication, were used to assess effect sizes for a future definitive trial. A nested process evaluation explored implementation barriers and the fidelity of the intervention with key stakeholders and senior staff in intervention premises using semi-structured interviews.<p></p>
<b>Results</b><p></p>
The process evaluation indicated implementation barriers and low fidelity, with a reluctance to implement the intervention and to submit to a formal risk audit. Power calculations suggest the intervention effect on violence and subjective intoxication would be raised to significance with a study size of 517 premises.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b><p></p>
It is methodologically feasible to conduct randomised controlled trials where licensed premises are the unit of allocation. However, lack of enthusiasm in senior premises staff indicates the need for intervention enforcement, rather than voluntary agreements, and on-going strategies to promote sustainability
