Drift of particles in self-similar systems and its Liouvillian interpretation
We study the dynamics of classical particles in different classes of
spatially extended self-similar systems, consisting of (i) a self-similar
Lorentz billiard channel, (ii) a self-similar graph, and (iii) a master
equation. In all three systems the particles typically drift at constant
velocity and spread ballistically. These transport properties are analyzed in
terms of the spectral properties of the operator evolving the probability
densities. For systems (i) and (ii), we explain the drift from the properties
of the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance spectrum and corresponding eigenvectorsComment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
K-Band Spectroscopy of an Obscured Massive Stellar Cluster in the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) with NIRSPEC
We present infrared spectroscopy of the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039)
with NIRSPEC at the W. M. Keck Observatory. We imaged the star clusters in the
vicinity of the southern nucleus (NGC 4039) in 0.39" seeing in K-band using
NIRSPEC's slit-viewing camera. The brightest star cluster revealed in the
near-IR (M_K(0) = -17.9) is insignificant optically, but coincident with the
highest surface brightness peak in the mid-IR (12-18 um) ISO image presented by
Mirabel et al (1998). We obtained high signal-to-noise 2.03-2.45 um spectra of
the nucleus and the obscured star cluster at R = 1900.
The cluster is very young (age ~ 4 Myr), massive (M ~ 16E6 M_sun), and
compact (density ~ 115 M_sun pc^(-3) within a 32 pc half-light radius),
assuming a Salpeter IMF (0.1-100 M_sun). Its hot stars have a radiation field
characterized by T_eff ~ 39,000 K, and they ionize a compact HII region with
n_e ~ 10^4 cm^(-3). The stars are deeply embedded in gas and dust (A_V = 9-10
mag), and their strong FUV field powers a clumpy photodissociation region with
densities n_H > 10^5 cm^(-3) on scales of ~ 200 pc, radiating L{H_2 1-0 S(1)}=

Impact of teacher’s method, attitude and motivation in teaching and learning of literature in English
This is a survey carried out to ascertain the extent to which teaching method, teachers’ and student’s attitude as well as their motivation affect teaching and learning of Literature in English and hence students’ academic performance in the subject. Data for the research was obtained by means of structured questionnaire administered on one hundred and twenty respondents randomly drawn from ten secondary schools in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State ONELGA. Data obtained was computed into frequency and analyzed by statistical mean. Results of data analysis showed that mean values for all items raised in the questionnaire were above 2.5 and hence accepted as being significant for the factor under consideration. It was therefore concluded that lack of adequate qualified teachers, negative and unfriendly attitude of teachers to the teaching profession and students as well as poor teaching methods and motivation were identified as problems of teaching Literature in- English in secondary schools to a large extent in ONELGA. From the foregoing, it was recommended that among others, Government should motivate teachers to enroll for further training; instructional materials should be provided for the teachers and students. Also, teachers should develop good cordial relationship with their students to enhance teaching and learning well as adopt the best teaching method that will meet the students’ needs
A survey of approaches to Virtual Enterprise Architecture: modeling languages, reference models, and architecture frameworks
As the theory and practice of enterprise architecture became mature, researchers and practitioners have started applying similar concepts and approaches to virtual enterprises. The virtual enterprise is a temporary coalition of enterprises joining hands to exploit a particular opportunity. Virtual Enterprise Architecture addresses a Virtual Enterprise holistically at a strategic level. This article provides a definition of Enterprise Architecture, Virtual Enterprise, and Virtual Enterprise Architecture and presents results from a study of six approaches to virtual enterprise architecture for virtual enterprises (NEML, CAML, AVERM, VERAM, BM VEARM, and ARCON)
An Incoherent Dynamo in Accretion Disks
We use the mean-field dynamo equations to show that an incoherent alpha
effect in mirror-symmetric turbulence in a shearing flow can generate a large
scale, coherent magnetic field. We illustrate this effect with simulations of a
few simple systems. In accretion disks, this process can lead to axisymmetric
magnetic domains whose radial and vertical dimensions will be comparable to the
disk height. This process may be responsible for observations of dynamo
activity seen in simulations of dynamo-generated turbulence involving, for
example, the Balbus-Hawley instability. In this case the magnetic field
strength will saturate at times the ambient pressure in real
accretion disks. The resultant dimensionless viscosity will be of the same
order. In numerical simulations the azimuthal extent of the simulated annulus
should be substituted for . We compare the predictions of this model to
numerical simulations previously reported by Brandenburg et al. (1995). In a
radiation pressure dominated environment this estimate for viscosity should be
reduced by a factor of due to magnetic buoyancy.Comment: 23 pages, uses aaste
Central Masses and Broad-Line Region Sizes of Active Galactic Nuclei. II. A Homogeneous Analysis of a Large Reverberation-Mapping Database
We present improved black hole masses for 35 active galactic nuclei (AGNs)
based on a complete and consistent reanalysis of broad emission-line
reverberation-mapping data. From objects with multiple line measurements, we
find that the highest precision measure of the virial product is obtained by
using the cross-correlation function centroid (as opposed to the
cross-correlation function peak) for the time delay and the line dispersion (as
opposed to full width half maximum) for the line width and by measuring the
line width in the variable part of the spectrum. Accurate line-width
measurement depends critically on avoiding contaminating features, in
particular the narrow components of the emission lines. We find that the
precision (or random component of the error) of reverberation-based black hole
mass measurements is typically around 30%, comparable to the precision attained
in measurement of black hole masses in quiescent galaxies by gas or stellar
dynamical methods. Based on results presented in a companion paper by Onken et
al., we provide a zero-point calibration for the reverberation-based black hole
mass scale by using the relationship between black hole mass and host-galaxy
bulge velocity dispersion. The scatter around this relationship implies that
the typical systematic uncertainties in reverberation-based black hole masses
are smaller than a factor of three. We present a preliminary version of a
mass-luminosity relationship that is much better defined than any previous
attempt. Scatter about the mass-luminosity relationship for these AGNs appears
to be real and could be correlated with either Eddington ratio or object
