A Cloud Tracking Tool for Planetary Orbiter Images

During their operations phase, planetary missions continuously produce a wealth of data that tend to overwhelm research teams. Spectral imagers, in particular, produce data cubes in which the wavelength dimension adds to the two spatial dimensions. Tracking of atmospheric features in order to derive winds and the construction of global maps from such large data volumes becomes particularly time-consuming if done manually. This highlights the importance of automated procedures capable of analysing sequences of data cubes with minimal user interaction. A tool for cloud tracking for such a purpose is currently under development in our group. In its present state it is based on synthetic images and uses a simple method of multiple matrix comparison to derive wind components. Deriving winds from data from the Venus Express - Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) instrument will be a possible application. We shall present an overview of the method, its benchmarking and the current status and future development of the project

Desenvolvimento clínico de medicamentos

O presente relatório foi realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Gestão da Investigação Clínica, de forma a descrever as atividades realizadas durante o estágio curricular que decorreu ao longo do ano letivo 2020/2021. O relatório está dividido em dois capítulos principais. O primeiro capítulo detalha as tarefas e procedimentos realizados ao longo do estágio curricular no setor de Assuntos Médicos, da Bluepharma Indústria Farmacêutica S.A. As atividades dinamizadas neste estágio resumem-se fundamentalmente às responsabilidades e funções de um promotor de ensaios clínicos. O segundo capítulo apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica acerca do desenvolvimento clínico de medicamentos genéricos, sendo o seu principal foco os requisitos de bioequivalência das autoridades do medicamento na Europa e nos Estados Unidos. A experiência deste estágio curricular foi bastante enriquecedora na medida em que foi possível obter mais conhecimentos ligados à área da investigação clínica, como também, ao funcionamento de uma indústria farmacêutica.This report was executed within the scope of the Master in Clinical Research Management, in order to describe the activities carried out during the curricular internship that took place during the academic year of 2020/2021. The report is divided in two main chapters. The first chapter details the tasks and procedures performed during the curricular internship in the Medical Affairs unit, from Bluepharma Indústria Farmacêutica, S.A. The activities executed during this internship are essentially the responsibilities and functions of a clinical trials sponsor. The second chapter presents a bibliographic review on the clinical development of generic drugs, being its main focus the bioequivalence requirements of the medicine authorities in Europe and United States. The experience of this curricular internship was quite enriching since it was possible to obtain more knowledge related to the clinical research area, as well as the functioning of a pharmaceutical industry.Mestrado em Gestão da Investigação Clínic

A aprendizagem da noção de derivada no 11º ano

Relatório da prática de ensino supervisionada, Mestrado em Ensino da Matemática, Universidade de Lisboa, 2014Este estudo baseia-se nos resultados obtidos durante a lecionação de 10 aulas que decorreram no final do 2.º e início do 3.º período do ano letivo de 2013/2014, com a turma do 11.º ano de escolaridade do curso de Ciências Socioeconómicas da Escola Secundária José Afonso de Loures. A unidade lecionada foi “Taxa de Variação e Derivada” e o principal objetivo do estudo é compreender que significados os alunos desenvolvem, de que forma utilizam a noção de derivada, e quais as dificuldades que manifestam, quer na resolução de problemas quer na apropriação destes conceitos. Para a consecução dos objetivos de aprendizagem— nomeadamente os que se prendem com a compreensão da noção de derivada, a sua interpretação geométrica e a interpretação de gráficos de funções — e realização do estudo projetado, as tarefas utilizadas nas aulas foram de natureza variada, com recurso às calculadoras gráficas e ao software Geogebra, projetadas segundo uma abordagem exploratória. Para a elaboração do trabalho de natureza investigativa recolhi as produções escritas, dos alunos, na realização das tarefas propostas em aula e nos elementos de avaliação. A observação direta do trabalho e participação dos alunos foi também um instrumento de recolha de dados, através da elaboração de memórias descritivas das aulas, assim como as entrevistas realizadas no final do ano letivo. A análise efetuada permite concluir que os alunos manifestaram um entendimento essencialmente instrumental da noção de derivada, vendo-a sobretudo como uma ferramenta para resolver problemas de optimização, e que a derivada num ponto é percecionada como a reta tangente ao gráfico da função nesse ponto. A manipulação algébrica, a escrita matemática e a interpretação geométrica são as principais dificuldades encontradas.This study seeks to understand which meannings the students developed when they are introduced to the derivative concept, how do they use in and which were their difficultis with the concept and in optimazation solving problems. Is based on the results obtained during the 10 lessons that occourred at the end of 2nd term and the begging of 3rd, in the school year 2013/2014, in economics course of Secondary School José Afonso of Loures. The unit taught was “Rate of Change and Derivative” and the subtopics: notion and calcule average rate of change; notion and obtencion of the rate ofchange; geometric interpretation of the rate of change (and the average rate of change); definition of derivative of a function(at one point, using the intuitive notion of limit and generalization of the derivative of a function); finding, by geometric arguments, the relation between the monotony of a function and the sign of their derivative; and, solving optimazation problems. I used tasks that promoted the learning in the students, of this concept and allowed the development of diferentes matematics activitis, incorporating tecnology, by grafhic calcutators or by the Geogebra software. The data collected are from the written produtions of the students in the classroom and in evaluation moments, the direct observation, interviews with the students and my own descripetive memory. The results suggest that the students tend to develop na instrumental understanding of the derivative of a function, seeing it mostly as a tool for solving optimization problems. The derivative of a function, at a point, is viewed as the tangent to the graph of the function at that point. The algebraic manipulation, writing with mathematical symbols and geometrical interpretation are the main difficulties encountered

A herança de Quioto em clima de incerteza : análise jurídico-económica do mercado de emissões num quadro de desenvolvimento sustentado

Tese de doutoramento, Ciências Jurídico-Económicas (Economia Política), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Direito, 2010.Inicialmente um tema científico, a questão climática alarga de forma gradual as suas fronteiras para assumir uma natureza política e jurídica, obrigando a uma abordagem multidisciplinar para compreender a sua autenticidade, fontes e impactos e para encontrar uma solução adequada a um problema de intergeracionalidade e de incerteza que envolve a avaliação e gestão do risco e dos custos e benefícios do abatimento de emissões. A Economia (com a preciosa ajuda das construções neo-clássicas, da Economia ambiental e dos recursos naturais e da Análise Custo-Benefício) vem servindo de ponte entre a ciência e o desenho de uma política climática apropriada. Com o Protocolo de Quioto e os seus mecanismos de flexibilidade, em particular o Comércio Internacional de Licenças de Emissão previsto no artigo 17.º, as Partes do Anexo I, em particular a União Europeia, de modo a cumprir as suas obrigações ao custo mais baixo, modelam as suas políticas climáticas à sombra do Protocolo, abrindo-as a instrumentos económicos com preferência pelo mercado de emissões. No debate sobre a melhor ferramenta, vários critérios como a eficiência, a eficácia ambiental, a equidade, a aceitabilidade política e social têm de ser considerados e pesados. À discussão deve ainda acrescer uma nota comportamental de modo a permitir uma avaliação mais realista da evolução e exequibilidade das políticas climáticas e da aptidão dos principais instrumentos para debelar o aumento de emissões de gases com efeito de estufa.Initially a science issue, climate change gradually enlarged its frontiers to become a political and normative question, obliging an interdisciplinary approach to understand its veracity, sources, impacts and possible and adequate solution to an intergenerational and uncertainty problem that raises risk and abatement costs and benefits assessment and management questions. Economics (with the precious help of neo-classical constructions, environmental economics and cost-benefit analysis) has been serving as a bridge between science and the design of a sound climate policy. With the Kyoto Protocol and its flexible mechanisms, especially its article 17, Annex-I Parties, beginning with the European Union, tend to open their policies to the implementation of economic instruments, with a preference for cap-and-trade systems, in order to comply with their obligations at the lowest cost. In the debate involving the best policy instrument several criteria must be accounted for such as efficiency, environmental effectiveness, equity, political feasibility and social acceptability. A behavioural note must be added in order to give a more real insight of the evolution and feasibility of climate policies and of the aptness of the major instruments found to deal with overwarming

Symptoms and signs in rigid gas permeable lens wearers during adaptation period

Objectives: To evaluate neophyte contact lens wearers’ fitting to rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses in terms of wearing time, tear volume, stability, corneal staining, and subjective ratings, over a 1-month period of time. Methods: Twenty-two young healthy subjects were enrolled for wearing RGP on a daily wear basis. The participants included in this study never wore contact lenses and showed a value under 10 in McMonnies Questionnaire. Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scales, Schirmer test, tear film break-up time (BUT), and corneal staining grading were performed. Follow-up visits were scheduled at 1, 7, 15, and 28 days. Results: Six subjects dropped out due to discomfort from the study before 1 month (27% of discontinuation rate). Successful RGP wearers (16 participants) achieved high levels of subjective vision and reported comfort scores of approximately 9 of 10 between 10 and 15 days. They reported wearing their lenses for an average of 10.1262.43 hr after 1 month of wear. Conversely, unsuccessful wearers discontinued wearing the lenses after the first 10 to 15 days, showing comfort scores and wearing time significantly lower compared with the first day of wear. Schirmer test showed a signifi- cant increase at 10 days (P,0.001), and the BUT trends decreased after the first week of wear in unsuccessful group. Conclusions: Symptomatology related with dryness and discomfort, detected during the first 10 days of the adaptation, may help the clinician to predict those participants who will potentially fail to adapt to RGP lens wear

Multidisciplinary journal: an editorial project

Neste relato apresentamos o desenvolvimento do processo de implementação da revista científica, RevistaMultidisciplinar, referindo como este projeto surgiu até à sua implementação. Propomo-nos apresentar a origem da revista; a constituição do corpo editorial e como se efetua a revisão por pares; a relevância do acesso aberto; o alojamento na plataforma Open Journal System/web responsivo e a inclusão em diretórios seletivos para a disseminação dos artigos científicos. Em três anos de publicação regular, a RevistaMultidisciplinar apresenta 6 números, com 50 artigos de fundamentação teórica, de reflexão ou de pesquisa empírica e10 outros textos como entrevistas e divulgação de projetos. No início deste semestre 2021/22 a revista já integra o diretório DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) e ERIH PLUS (European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences).N/

Violence and video games in youngsters' lives

Mestrado em Línguas, Literaturas e CulturasO presente trabalho propõe-se divulgar o impacto que os vídeo jogos têm na vida dos pré-adolescentes e adolescentes; quais os seus vídeo jogos preferidos e o controlo que pais e lojas exercem sobre o uso de vídeo jogos por parte destes adolescentes. Este trabalho também visa contribuir para o debate em curso sobre uma possível associação entre o consumo de vídeo jogos violentos e comportamentos agressivos e violentos. Depois de estudar a literatura existente sobre os possíveis efeitos da exposição à violência transmitida pelos meios de comunicação, foram conduzidos questionários e entrevistas com alunos de diversas faixas etárias. Os resultados demonstram que os vídeo jogos são o meio de entretenimento mais extensivamente utilizado pelos jovens, confirmando a ideia de que afectam a sua vida de diferentes maneiras. Através da análise do conteúdo dos vídeo jogos mais jogados, demonstra-se como a violência está explicitamente expressa e como os jogos são projectados para ser viciantes. Estes resultados abrem caminho para posterior pesquisa sobre os efeitos sociais e culturais dos vídeo jogos. ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines the impact of video games on the lives of youngsters; their prime video games, and the control that parents and shops exert over the use of video games by youngsters. It also aims at contributing to the ongoing debate about media effects by analyzing a probable association between violent video games and violent and aggressive behaviours. After studying the existing literature on the effects of exposure to media violence, questionnaires and interviews were conducted with students of different age groups in order to determine the impact that videogames have on their lives. It was found that video games are indeed the most extensively-used entertainment media among youngsters, confirming the view that they affect young people’s lives in several ways. Through content analysis of the prime video games, it is demonstrated how violence is explicitly expressed and how these games are designed to be addictive. These findings lead the way to more extensive studies on the social and cultural effects of videogames

Recursos locais para aplicações multifuncionais de captação de energia com base em tetraedrite

CIES2020 - XVII Congresso Ibérico e XIII Congresso Ibero-americano de Energia SolarRESUMO: Este trabalho descreve as principais linhas de investigação que estão em curso no âmbito do projeto LocalEnergy (http://localenergy.lneg.pt). LocalEnergy é um projeto multidisciplinar de Investigação, Desenvolvimento e Inovação (I&D&I), envolvendo atividades no domínio da ciência dos materiais, da geologia e das energias renováveis. Essas atividades estão orientadas para a indústria e assentam numa abordagem disruptiva visando o desenvolvimento de materiais termoelétricos, através da utilização de materiais à base de tetraedrites naturais e sintéticas, e o desenvolvimento de novos absorsores para células solares de filmes finos, usando materiais à base de tetraedrites sintéticas. Considerando que Portugal é um dos países europeus com maior nível de irradiação de energia solar e que a tetraedrite é um recurso mineral local, presente na Zona Sul Portuguesa da Faixa Piritosa Ibérica, o projeto LocalEnergy representa uma oportunidade para o desenvolvimento de sistemas energéticos sustentáveis baseados na maximização e exploração de dois importantes recursos endógenos (energia solar e recursos minerais).ABSTRACT: This work describes the main lines of investigation that are underway within LocalEnergy project (http://localenergy.lneg.pt). LocalEnergy is a multidisciplinary Research, Development and Innovation project, involving activities in the field of materials science, geology and renewable energies. These activities are oriented towards the industry and are based on a disruptive approach aimed at the development of thermoelectric materials, through the use of materials based on natural and synthetic tetrahedrites, and the development of new absorbers for thin film solar cells, using materials based on synthetic tetrahedrites.
