The Patent Ability of Genetic Therapies: CAR-T and Medical Treatment Exclusions Around the World

    Get PDF
More than eighty countries, including the members of the European Patent Convention, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, China, Japan, and India, currently exclude or limit the patentability of methods of medical treatment. CAR-T and other recent gene and cell therapies, which operate based on the extraction of genetic or cellular material from a patient, the alteration of such material, and the reintroduction of such material to the patient’s body, should, under most or all of these legal regimes, be considered medical treatments that are thus excluded from patentability, or as to which patent enforcement is limited. Accordingly, we urge national patent offices to update their examination procedures and practices to take these patentability limitations into account, and to publish guidance clearly explaining this approach to applicants

Insomnio, ansiedad y depresión en el paciente oncológico

The presence of psychiatric disorders in the cancer patient has been well documented. In spite of their frequency, the identification of these disorders remains insufficient. There are various reasons for this, such as: a) the mingling of somatic and psychological symptomatology; b) believing that the presence of anxiety, depression, or insomnia is normal among patients with cancer; c) the lack of training of medical personnel in the detection of psychiatric disorders; or d) viewing these disorders as secondary to the illness itself and to the oncological ¡ treatments. This research paper deals with insomnia, anxiety, and depression among cancer patients, as being the disorders with the highest incidence among them and with the greatest impact on their well-being. We present guidelines for the detection of these disorders, as well as their pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatmen

The planetary nebula IC 4776 and its post-common-envelope binary central star

We present a detailed analysis of IC 4776, a planetary nebula displaying a morphology believed to be typical of central star binarity. The nebula is shown to comprise a compact hourglass-shaped central region and a pair of precessing jet-like structures. Time-resolved spectroscopy of its central star reveals periodic radial velocity variability consistent with a binary system. While the data are insufficient to accurately determine the parameters of the binary, the most likely solutions indicate that the secondary is probably a low-mass main sequence star. An empirical analysis of the chemical abundances in IC 4776 indicates that the common-envelope phase may have cut short the AGB evolution of the progenitor. Abundances calculated from recombination lines are found to be discrepant by a factor of approximately two relative to those calculated using collisionally excited lines, suggesting a possible correlation between low abundance discrepancy factors and intermediate-period post-common-envelope central stars and/or Wolf-Rayet central stars. The detection of a radial velocity variability associated with binarity in the central star of IC 4776 may be indicative of a significant population of (intermediate-period) post-common-envelope binary central stars which would be undetected by classic photometric monitoring techniques.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

We report the retrospective results of 14 displaced radial neck fractures with >30ºof tilt (Judet grades 3-4) in children aged between 7 and 14 years treated with arthrotomy and pinning. Sex distribution was 9 girl and 5 boys. The average follow-up was 47 months. We found no relationship between delay in the surgical treatment and functional results. On the other hand, a relationship between residual final tilt and poorer functional results appears
