Level of periodontal diseases knowledge was evaluated among 80 chronic periodontitis (PD) patients and its correlation with patients’ self-perceive OHQoL was investigated. The Malay version of OHQoL-UK was used. Patients’ with high knowledge of PD were of severe chronic periodontitis group (p>0.05); Malay (p<0.05) and had higher economic status (p<0.05). However majority of the high knowledge group perceived no effect of the PD on their OHQoL (p<0.05). Despite that, significant correlation but at lower strength was found between patients’ knowledge and the social aspects of OHQoL [r=0.249, p<0.05]. There were significant different in level of PD knowledge between chronic periodontitis patients with different perception on OHQoL

Relationship of Dental Caries and Fluorosis to Fluoride Supplement History in a Non-Fluoridated Sample of Schoolchildren

A random sample of 206 Michigan children, aged from 9 to 13, were examined for fluorosis from a larger group of 2038 children participating in a dental project. Clinical examinations included caries data (DMFS) and assessment of fluorosis by use of the Tooth Surface Index of Fluorosis (TSIF). Separate examiners were used for each index. The response rate of a questionnaire mailed to parents to gather information on residence histories, use of fluoride supplements, and antibiotics was 78%. The prevalence of fluorosis was about 20% among the respondents. Of the 4868 tooth surfaces examined, 9.2% were affected by fluorosis. In all cases, dental fluorosis was judged as mild, with most occurrences on the posterior teeth. No instances of moderate or severe fluorosis were found. The caries experience of respondents was 1.69 ± 2.73 DMFS. Caries experience does not appear to be significantly related to income, education, or fluoride supplement use. Approximately 52% of respondents were reported to have taken fluoride supplements with various degrees of consistency. Parents' education was positively related to both prevalence of fluorosis (odds ratio = 2.2) and use of fluoride supplements (odds ratio = 2.7). No significant relation was revealed with evidence of fluorosis and use of supplements. This study shows a relatively mild level of dental fluorosis in a sample of children from a non-fluoridated area. Dental fluorosis in this group does not appear to be related to use of fluoride supplements or differences in caries experience.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66503/2/10.1177_08959374890030021501.pd

Mapping Social Impact: A Bibliometric Analysis

ABSTRACT: Social dimension is a fundamental element in the evaluation of initiatives and policies that are demanded and promoted by public and private organizations as well as society as a whole. Thus, there is a thriving interest in social impact research, especially from the point of view of its measurement and valuation. In this work, we explored the rising attention on the concept of social impact to identify salient agents in the field and categorize the conceptual structure of research. To achieve this, we used evaluative and relational techniques combining traditional bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer and a text mining analysis based on natural processing language (NLP) to search for documents with the term "social impact" in the title. The documents were extracted from the database Web of Science (WoS) for the period of 1938-2020. As a result, we mapped the concept of social impact from up to 1677 documents, providing an overview of the topics in which the concept was used (e.g., health, finance, environment and development, etc.) and the trends of research. This work seeks to serve as a roadmap that reflects not only the evolution of social impact but also future lines of research that require attention

DO PATIENTS WITH VARYING DEMOGRAPHIC AND REGIONAL CHARACTERISTICS EQUALLY MISS APPOINTMENTS ACROSS DENTAL SPECIALTIES?

Objectives: Since dental practice is unique and procedure-based, understanding the problem of missed dental appointment among patients in Health care facilities is crucial. The main purpose of this study was to understand whether patients with varying demographic, regional, and appointment characteristics equally missed dental appointments across dental specialties at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSH&RC), Riyadh. Method: After institutional approval, we retrospectively analyzed patients’ missed dental appointments. We selected a sample of 3185 patients with “No show” or missed dental appointments for 2012. We employed chi-square goodness of fit test to establish whether there were statistically significant relationships between the type of dental specialty a patient missed and various patient characteristics. Additionally, we employed Cramer’s V to measure the strength of the relationship. Both techniques were useful in making statistical inferences from the data about the larger population based on the sample. Results: The findings showed that there are statistically significant relationships between the type of dental specialty a patient missed and various patient characteristics. Demographic, regional, registration characteristics of patients, appointment seasons and sessions, and chance of missed appointment in the various dental specialties are associated. However, with exception of age, all the other factors appear to have small effect on chance of missed appointments across dental specialties. Conclusion: With current problem of ‘no show’, the findings of this study is expected to inform KFSH&RC and other institutions to establish policies and guidelines to improve both the rate of "honored" appointments and minimize the many unused visit hours
