    Effects of different levels of dried tomato pomace on performance, egg quality and serum metabolites of laying hens

    A study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary inclusion of dried tomato pomace (DTP) on performance, egg quality and serum metabolites in laying hens. A total of one hundred and forty four LOHMANN LSL-LITE hens were randomly allocated into 4 groups consisting of 6 replicates, each replicate has 6 birds. Birds were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with 150, 170 or 190 g/kg of DTP. As a result of this study, there were no significant differences in body weight (BW), feed intake (FI), egg production (EP), feed conversion ratio (FCR) egg weight (EW), egg mass (EM), eggshell weight (ESW), eggshell thickness (EST) and Haugh unit (HU) among treatments. Dietary inclusion of DTP significantly increased yolk color score (YCS, P < 0.01). As dietary DTP increased from 0 to 19%, YCS significantly increased from 7.25 to 9.67 and 7.25 to 9.83 in first and second periods, respectively. Total serum protein, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, albumin, glucose and triglyceride levels were not significantly affected by DTP addition. In summary, DTP can be used as an alternative feedstuff in laying hen diets at inclusion levels up to 190 g/kg without any negative impact on performance and egg quality traits.Key words: Dried tomato pomace, egg quality, laying hen, serum metabolites

    Metabolic phenotypes and risk of colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

    Background The association of obesity with colorectal cancer (CRC) may vary depending on metabolic status. Objective This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the combined impacts of obesity and metabolic status on CRC risk. Methods The Scopus, PubMed, and web of sciences databases were systematically searched up to Jun 2021 to find all eligible publications examining CRC risk in individuals with metabolically unhealthy normal-weight (MUHNW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUHO) phenotypes. Results A total of 7 cohort studies with a total of 759,066 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with healthy normal-weight people, MUHNW, MHO, and MUHO individuals indicated an increased risk for CRC with a pooled odds ratio of 1.19 (95% CI = 1.09–1.31) in MUHNW, 1.14 (95% CI = 1.06–1.22) in MHO, and 1.24 (95% CI = 1.19–1.29) in MUHO subjects. When analyses were stratified based on gender, associations remained significant for males. However, the elevated risk of CRC associated with MHO and MUHO was not significant in female participants. Conclusions The individuals with metabolic abnormality, although at a normal weight, have an increased risk for CRC.     Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Chronic Oral Mucosal Diseases: Reliability and Validity of Urdu Version of Chronic Oral Mucosal Disease Questionnaire (COMDQ)

    The aim of the study was to translate and validate the Urdu version of the Chronic Oral Mucosal Disease Questionnaire (COMDQ) and measure the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Pakistani patients with chronic oral mucosal disease. One hundred and twenty patients with chronic oral mucosal diseases were recruited for this study. Two types of reliability of the COMDQ were tested. First, the internal consistency was calculated using Cronbach’s alpha, and second, test-retest reliability was calculated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Convergent validity was assessed for testing the validity of the COMDQ by examining the correlations with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and OHIP-14 using Pearson’s correlations coefficient, and a t-test was used to compare the COMDQ domains and the socio-demographic characteristics. The most prevalent chronic oral mucosal disease (COMD) among the participants was recurrent aphthous stomatitis (47.5%), and the least prevalent was oral granulomatosis (6.6%). The total mean score for COMDQ was 43.5 (SD = 18.4). It showed a high level of internal consistency (Cronbach’s a = 0.81), and test-retest reliability was also good (r = 0.85). The total score of COMDQ was strongly correlated with the total score of OHIP-14 and VAS (r = 0.86 and r = 0.83), which indicated good convergent validity. The score of pain and the functional limitation domain reported a significant difference with age (p p < 0.034). The Urdu version of COMDQ is an accurate, valid, and reliable instrument that can be used to assess the OHRQoL in patients with chronic oral mucosal diseases in Pakistani and other Urdu-speaking populations of different age groups

    Effects of neurofeedback on the short-term memory and continuous attention of patients with moderate traumatic brain injury: A preliminary randomized controlled clinical trial.

    PurposeThere are some studies which showed neurofeedback therapy (NFT) can be effective in clients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) history. However, randomized controlled clinical trials are still needed for evaluation of this treatment as a standard option. This preliminary study was aimed to evaluate the effect of NFT on continuous attention (CA) and short-term memory (STM) of clients with moderate TBI using a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT).MethodsIn this preliminary RCT, seventeen eligible patients with moderate TBI were randomly allocated in two intervention and control groups. All the patients were evaluated for CA and STM using the visual continuous attention test and Wechsler memory scale-4th edition (WMS-IV) test, respectively, both at the time of inclusion to the project and four weeks later. The intervention group participated in 20 sessions of NFT through the first four weeks. Conversely, the control group participated in the same NF sessions from the fifth week to eighth week of the project.ResultsEight subjects in the intervention group and five subjects in the control group completed the study. The mean and standard deviation of participants' age were (26.75&nbsp;±&nbsp;15.16) years and (27.60&nbsp;±&nbsp;8.17) years in experiment and control groups, respectively. All of the subjects were male. No significant improvement was observed in any variables of the visual continuous attention test and WMS-IV test between two groups (p&nbsp;≥&nbsp;0.05).ConclusionBased on our literature review, it seems that our study is the only study performed on the effect of NFT on TBI patients with control group. NFT has no effect on CA and STM in patients with moderate TBI. More RCTs with large sample sizes, more sessions of treatment, longer time of follow-up and different protocols are recommended

    Leptin receptor expression in Middle Eastern colorectal cancer and its potential clinical implication

    We investigated the role of leptin receptor (Ob-R) and its relationship with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT activation in colorectal carcinomas (CRCs) tissues followed by in vitro studies using a panel of CRC cell lines. Obesity serves an important risk factor of several cancers including CRC that ranks as the second most common cancer in Saudi Arabia. High levels of adipokine leptin (Ob) and its Ob-R are seen in obesity and also in various carcinomas including CRC. We investigated the proliferative and antiapoptotic effect of Ob on human CRC cell lines Caco-2, HT-29 and SW-840 and the role of PI3K/AKT-signaling pathway in mediating these actions. Then the expression of Ob-R and its relationship with clinicopathological features was analyzed in 448 CRC, 229 normal colon mucosa and 24 colorectal adenomas using tissue microarray technology. Treatment with Ob resulted in increased proliferation of CRC cell lines and involved activation of PI3K/AKT-signaling pathway. Pretreatment with Ob-R small interfering RNA or PI3K inhibitor inhibited these responses. Ob-R was significantly overexpressed in primary CRC relative to adenomas and normal colonic mucosa. In primary CRC, Ob-R significantly correlated with Ob expression, early stage and well-differentiated tumors. Intriguingly, patient with Ob-R positive tumors showed significantly better overall survival ( P  = 0.0098). Ob plays a critical role in CRC carcinogenesis through PI3K/AKT pathway via Ob-R. Ob-R is a prognostic marker associated with better survival
