Sant Joan d’Alacant Declaration in Defense of Open Access to Scientific Publications

EditorialEl concepto de Acceso Abierto (Open Access, OA) no sólo tiene que ver con la accesibilidad al documento científico, sino también con los permisos de reutilización más o menos restrictivos en función de los derechos reservados para su distribución. A partir de esta idea, surgieron numerosas iniciativas, con o sin ánimo de lucro, con el fin de facilitar el acceso universal a través de internet a las publicaciones científicas.Proyectos como Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO, 1998), The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC, 1998), PubMed Central (PMC, 2000), The Public Library of Science(PLOS, 2000) o BioMed Central (BMC, 2001), fueron pioneros de una revolución que haría replantear las estrategias comerciales de la edición científica. Otros como Dialnet (2001), Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal (Redalyc, 2003) y el Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ, 2003), también extenderían el movimiento del acceso abierto y ayudaron al proceso de globalización del conocimiento en las comunidades científicas del ámbito iberoamericano. Las primeras Declaraciones que sentaron las bases del futuro desarrollo del acceso abierto fueron: la Budapest Open Access Initiative (2002), Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, (2003) y Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing (2003), esta última considerada como la declaración de principios para las ciencias de la salud. Por otro lado, se han promovido manifiestos, impulsados generalmente en reuniones de editores de revistas científicas que proponían algunas recomendaciones para el correcto desarrollo del acceso abierto a la ciencia. En España se podría citar la Declaración de la Alhambra (2010), que aportó recomendaciones para las políticas y plan de acción para el desarrollo del acceso abierto en el sur de Europa. Más reciente y en el ámbito latinoamericano, se elaboró la Declaración de la reunión de Consorcios de Iberoamérica y el Caribe (2017), que entre sus recomendaciones discute la desviación del concepto de Open Access por la creciente aparición de revistas de pago por publicación con precios a veces abusivos (APC, article processing charges) con la etiqueta de Open Access.N

A colorimetry based, semi-automated portable sensor device for the detection of arsenic in drinking water

A portable colorimetric device is presented for arsenic ion detection in drinking water. The main purpose of this device – which was developed to complement a commercial water dearsenating station demanding regular (weekly to monthly) regeneration runs depending on its saturation – is to provide regular field measurements and easy, semi-automatic operation designed specifically for untrained, typically illiterate users e.g. the population of developing countries. The device exploits a commercially available, well established reagent kit, which is widely used in arsenic field-testing in many developing countries. The hereby presented custom-designed microfluidic system enhances the user-friendliness, the functionality and reliability of the test-strip based kit. The response for total inorganic arsenic ion concentrations (As(III) and As(V)) is linear in the 5-20 μg/l (ppb) range with a sensitivity of 1 μg/l, thus the device is capable to distinguish drinkable water based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines of 10 μg/l. The average relative standard deviation of the measurements is 8 % in the linear range and it is below 2 % for higher arsenic concentrations (above 20 μg/l). The hardware construction of the device and the custom microfluidic system is presented in detail. The effect of elevated water sample temperature on the kinetics and performance of the device was also investigated in order to reduce the required time for the measurements. Stable and reliable arsenic concentration values were obtained after 60 min at 22 oC (ambient temperature) and after only 25 min at 50 oC water sample temperature, but at a cost of an increased relative standard deviation to 16 %, in the linear range

Concise Synthesis of Photocleavable Molecular Tag for Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry via Fries Reaction

A new synthetic route for the photocleavable molecular tag for laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) was achieved using Fries reaction of 2,6-dimethylphenyl ester as its key reaction. Zirconium chloride was found as uniquely efficient adjuvant to promote the reaction. The molecular tag was obtained in 5 steps without chromatographic purification

Hydrogen-Bonding Network Anchors the Cyclic Form of Sugar Arylhydrazones

The “classical” challenge, raised by Emil Fischer as to why one monosaccharide arylhydrazone adopts a cyclic structure but another an acyclic structure, is answered here. The present comprehensive analysis of hexose and hexosamine arylhydrazones, based on 2D NMR spectroscopy and theoretical modeling, has established that the chain of hydrogen bonds needed for conformational selection can only be completed for D-glucosamine derivatives. Thus, D -glucosamine 4-nitrophenyl-hydrazone exclusively adopts its cyclic form, but any configurational changes imply the formation of acyclic structures. In conclusion, three criteria dominate structure selection, namely 1) an amino function at the C-2 position, 2) the “all-equatorial” substitution mode of the pyranoid ring, and 3) an electron- withdrawing group on the arylhydrazone are all needed to get the cyclic form only
