Previous research has shown a difference on the athletes’ portrayal based on gendered language use on television broadcasting of sporting events. A content analysis on the 2018 Tennis US Open Championship Weekend for both men’s and women’s tennis matches explains the structure of the broadcasting commentating done by the network that has the rights to this tournament. The study looks at different categories of the content of the comments and the descriptors that are used to refer to both female and male athletes. Framing and priming theories were the theoretical frameworks for this study. Findings revealed no significant change was observed with athletic skill and strategy-based comments for either gender. The findings also showed that descriptors related to emotionality were more common in the commentary with women

It presents a large exposition about the social and economic Brazilian panorama. It notes and analyses the performance of fourteen public or private institutions of social work for boys and girls who lives on the streets or are tight spot, searching information in order to develop a research. For collecting the data, it uses semi-organized interviews, covering a population of thirty-five people and professionals from different fields of Brazilian society. It points out as the main result the draft of a social educative model to the advantage of the abandoned underage, mainly well-founded in «Anton Makarenko Pedagogy» . It infers that the quality of the assistance offered by the most public institutions to recuperate and reintegrate the underage who is guarded by the State, is insufficient and low-trait. It can also be noticed that the private institutions privilege more the social aspect than the educational aspect

The Impact of Energizing Interactions on Voluntary and Involuntary Turnover

In this paper we build from the theory of energetic activation to highlight the role energizing interactions play in relation to performance and turnover. We theorize that the association between energizing interactions within organizations and turnover is mediated by individual performance. We test our hypotheses using longitudinal network data collected annually within the IT department of a global engineering consulting firm over a four-year period. Our study shows that when an individual perceives their interactions with others inside the organization as increasing their level of energetic activation, they have a reduced likelihood of voluntary turnover, but that this relationship is mediated by individual performance. Perceiving interactions as increasing energetic activation results in higher performance, which in turn actually increases voluntary turnover. In contrast, when others perceive interactions with the focal actor as increasing their level of energetic activation it reduces the focal actor’s risk of involuntary turnover. This relationship is also mediated by performance. When others within the organization perceive interactions with the focal actor as increasing their level of energetic activation, it results in the focal actor having higher performance, which in turn reduces the focal actor’s involuntary turnover. In conclusion, we note that our findings are specific to knowledge workers with IT skills and may not be generalizable to all employees. We also suggest implications for managers and potential areas for future research

Space Platform Solar Array-A Progress Report

The Space Platform Solar Array represents a significant step forward in lightweight photovoltaic array technology. Pacing elements of technology development and design have been in work for several years at both Lockheed and TRW under contract to Marshall Space Flight Center. Requirements have been firmed up with prime system contractors, TRW and MDAC,and detailed design and testing is underway. This paper summarizes these requirements, presents a summary of key aspects of the solar array design, identifies technology issues and discusses testing efforts currently underway to resolve these issues. These efforts include an extension/retraction mast test, KC-135 zero g testing, plasma testing of solar panels, and temperature cycling of the TRW and Lockheed solar panel designs

Can Client Firms Achieve Radical Innovation in IT Outsourcing?

    Get PDF
There is growing evidence that client firms expect outsourcing suppliers to transform their business. Most outsourcing vendors indeed deliver incremental innovation to client firms. However, radical innovation in outsourcing is more challenging to achieve. While prior studies have provided some evidence regarding how innovation in outsourcing may take place, research has so far failed to conceptualize and operationalize the factors affecting radical innovation in outsourcing. It is not yet clear how contractual and relational aspects affect such innovation. This paper, therefore, is set about exploring the effect of contract types and client-supplier relationship on radical innovation. Results suggest that joint-venture contract and strong client-supplier relationship lead to radical innovation while time and materials and fixed-price contracts are less likely to lead to radical innovation. The strength of client-supplier relationship mediates the effect of joint venture contract on radical innovation. The paper concludes by discussing the theoretical and practical implications

The Impact of Energy on Projects

It’s no surprise that success in project-based organizations is driven by how well project teams perform. The quality of performance depends not only on the demands of the project but on the team makeup and dynamics. In fact, those human factors can have a much greater impact on results than the challenges of complexity and scope. Collaboration, communication, leadership, and effective knowledge sharing are vital to success, and the “spirit” of teams matters at least as much as their technical skill
