Integration of public transport planning and spatial planning in Norrköping : Collaboration for achieving the same vision but with different strategies

    No full text
The integration of public transport planning and spatial planning has become an internationally well-known phenomenon and is seen by planners as a fundamental prerequisite for getting more people to travel sustainably, and thus reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from the transport sector. The aim is to design the built environment in such a way that sustainable travel is promoted. Through semi-structured interviews, a document analysis, and a small field observation, this thesis examines how the municipality of Norrköping and the regional public transport company Östgötatrafiken collaborate to achieve successful integration. The aim has been to investigate how the process of this integration unfolds in the municipality of Norrköping in Sweden in order to contribute with more in-depth research in a Scandinavian context. This has been analyzed from a theoretical framework of TOD, Institutional theory and Collaborative planning.  The findings shows that both Norrköping municipality and Östgötatrafiken are working towards goals of increasing the share of trips with public transport, but when the purposes behind these differ, goal conflicts arise. This leads to different strategic considerations where Östgötatrafiken wants the built environment to promote time-efficient public transportation, while the municipality of Norrköping want the built environment to promote all sustainable means of transport. As a result, there are differences regarding public transport's mission, resources and priorities. As this study also shows that collaboration is the key to success, I argue that collaboration should take place as early as possible in the process, and already at the formulation of political and strategic goals.

How do you read? Iranians’ reading in Swedish and Persian

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how people from Iran experience reading in their mother tongue, Persian, compared to how they experience reading in Swedish and if there was a difference. The questions to be answered in the thesis were: What is the dominant purpose when people read their mother tongue and when they read in Swedish. Do they read because they need information, because they want to relax or do they, when they read, reflect on their own lives? The method was qualitative, interviews were conducted with 8 Iranians living in Sweden. The theoretical background consists of a description of theories on reading and theories on language and identity. The answers from the interviews reveal that many of the individuals that were interviewed, were reading in an instrumental way, i.e. they read mainly to find information and especially so when reading in Swedish, but at the same time they do reflect on their own life when they read. The results were then compared with theories. Furhammar’s theory on reading habits with the categories ”impersonal instrumental reading”, ”impersonal experience reading”, ”personal experience reading” and ”personal instrumental reading” seem to correspond with the results of the study. The other theories on reading which were used, i.e. Appleyard’s theory that people seek some kind of truth when they read and Ross’ theory that people read to get emotional knowledge, did also in part correspond with the results, but not as well as Furhammar’s theory. The theories on language and identity also seemed to correspond well with the results.

Under this season I have examined, analysed and evaluated the laboratory of hedges in the schoolgarden in Johannesberg in Mariestad. There are about 40 different sorts and varieties which some of them are unusually and not reliabled as trimed hedges. In this essay the primary purpose is to bring out the pros and cons of them and my hopes are to find more alternative trees and shrubs in the using as trimed hedges. My motivation is that this essay can be used in a further purpose.

Regional collaborations and cooperation in public transport – an overview : Collaborations between Sweden's public transport authorities

In Sweden, the overall responsibility for public transport planning lies with the regional public transport authorities. However, planning cannot be issued by these authorities on their own but requires collaboration with a range of actors for planning to reach its full potential. This study is based on a survey of how 18 of Sweden’s 21 public transport authorities interact with each other when it comes to inter-regional travel, i.e., travel across county borders. To find out, a content analysis was carried out of the public transport policy documents of the regions studied. The results show that all regions in Sweden interact in one way or another with other regions, but that this interaction is linked to the geographical location of the regions. Furthermore, the geographical location plays a major role in the depth and breadth of the regions' interaction with each other. The results also show that there are large differences in how transparent the regions are about regional cooperation in their public transport policy documents.
