Reproductive Seasonality, Fecundity, And Spawning Frequency Of Tautog (Tautoga Onitis) In The Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia
The tautog, Thutoga onitis (Linnaeus), ranges from Nova Scotia to South Carolina and has become a popular target for recreational and commercial fisheries. Although tautog are a multiple spawning species, reproductive potential, measured as annual fecundity, has not been estimated previously with methods (batch fecundity, spawning frequency) necessary for a species with indeterminate annual fecundity. A total of 960 tautog were collected from the mouth of the Rappahannock River in the lower Chesapeake Bay to 45 kin offshore of Virginia\u27s coastline to investigate tautog reproductive biology in the southern portion of the species range. Tautog did not exhibit a 1:1 sex ratio; 56% were females. Male tautog reached 50% maturity at 218 mm TL, females at 224 mm TL. Tautog spawned from 7 April 1995 to 15 June 1995, at locations from the York River to 45 kin offshore. Batch fecundity estimates ranged from 2800 to 181,200 eggs per spawning for female tautog age 3-9, total length 259516 mm. Mean batch fecundity +/-SEM for female tautog ages 4-6 was 54,243 2472 eggs and 106,256 3837 eggs for females ages 7-9. Spawning frequency was estimated at 1.2 days, resulting in 58 spawning days per female in 1995. Estimates of potential annual fecundity for tautog ages 3-9 ranged from 160,000 to 10,510,000 eggs
The Potential Impact of Plain Packaging of Cigarette Products Among Brazilian Young Women: An Experimental Study
Background: Tobacco use is responsible for 5.4 million deaths every year worldwide and is a leading cause of preventable death. The burden of these deaths is rapidly shifting to low and middle-income countries, such as Brazil. Brazil has prohibited most forms of tobacco advertising; however, the cigarette pack remains a primary source of marketing. The current study examined how tobacco packaging influences brand appeal and perceptions of health risk among young women in Brazil.
Methods: A between-subjects experiment was conducted in which 640 Brazilian women aged 16–26 participated in an online survey. Participants were randomized to view 10 cigarette packages according to one of three experimental conditions: standard branded packages, the same packs without brand imagery (“plain packaging”), or the same packs without brand imagery or descriptors (e.g., flavors). Participants rated packages on perceived appeal, taste, health risk, smoothness, and smoker attributes. Finally, participants were shown a range of branded and plain packs from which they could select one as a free gift, which constituted a behavioral measure of appeal.
Results: Branded packs were rated as significantly more appealing, better tasting, and smoother on the throat than plain packs. Branded packs were also associated with a greater number of positive smoker attributes including style and sophistication, and were perceived as more likely to be smoked by females than the plain packs. Removing descriptors from the plain packs further decreased the ratings of appeal, taste and smoothness, and also reduced associations with positive attributes. In the pack offer, participants were three times more likely to select branded packs than plain packs.
Conclusions: Plain packaging and removal of descriptors may reduce the appeal of smoking for youth and young adults, and consequently reduce smoking susceptibility. Overall, the findings provide support for plain packaging regulations, such as those in Australia
Varieties of Capitalism : Some Philosophical and Historical Considerations

In this essay it is argued that the existence of varieties of capitalism does not rule out the need for, or possibility of, specification or definition of that type. Accordingly, ‘capitalism’ is still a viable term. The critique of ‘essentialism’ is also countered, after clarifying its meaning. In particular, it is pointed out that a suitably-defined ‘essentialism’ does not imply some kind of ontological or explanatory reductionism – ‘economic’ or otherwise. But while adopting what are basically Aristotelian arguments about essences, we need to reject Aristotle’s auxiliary notion that variety generally results from temporary deviations from a representative type or trend. Furthermore, capitalism is a historically specific and relatively recent system: we need to develop a classificatory definition of that system that demarcates it from other past or possible social formations.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Pretreatment of mixed softwoods with SO2 impregnation and steam for production of ethanol has been investigated. The optimal conditions, both for sugar yield and ethanol yield, to assess the effect of inhibitors formed in the pretreatment, have been determined. The parameters investigated were: SO2 concentration (1-6% (w/w) dry matter), temperature (190-230 degrees C) and residence time (2-15 min). After pretreatment, the material was separated into a solid residue and a filtrate. The solid residue was enzymatically hydrolysed with 2% dry matter (w/w). To investigate fermentability, the hydrolysed filtrate was fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The effects of the different parameters are described by response-surface modelling. The highest experimental sugar yield of 42.1 g per 100 g dry matter was obtained at 210 degrees C and 5.5 min residence time. Although the fermentabilities were good for all filtrates with yields greater than 90% of the yield obtained in a pure glucose reference solution, the pretreatment has a clear influence on the ethanol production rate. A Giant Outburst at Millimeter Wavelengths in the Orion Nebula
BIMA observations of the Orion nebula discovered a giant flare from a young
star previously undetected at millimeter wavelengths. The star briefly became
the brightest compact object in the nebula at 86 GHz. Its flux density
increased by more than a factor of 5 on a timescale of hours, to a peak of 160
mJy. This is one of the most luminous stellar radio flares ever observed.
Remarkably, the Chandra X-ray observatory was in the midst of a deep
integration of the Orion nebula at the time of the BIMA discovery; the source's
X-ray flux increased by a factor of 10 approximately 2 days before the radio
detection. Follow-up radio observations with the VLA and BIMA showed that the
source decayed on a timescale of days, then flared again several times over the
next 70 days, although never as brightly as during the discovery. Circular
polarization was detected at 15, 22, and 43 GHz, indicating that the emission
mechanism was cyclotron. VLBA observations 9 days after the initial flare yield
a brightness temperature Tb > 5 x 10^7 K at 15 GHz. Infrared spectroscopy
indicates the source is a K5V star with faint Br gamma emission, suggesting
that it is a weak-line T Tauri object. Zeeman splitting measurements in the
infrared spectrum find B ~ 2.6 +/- 1.0 kG. The flare is an extreme example of
magnetic activity associated with a young stellar object. These data suggest
that short observations obtained with ALMA will uncover hundreds of flaring

Envelope structure of deeply embedded young stellar objects in the Serpens Molecular Cloud
Aperture synthesis and single-dish (sub) millimeter molecular lines and
continuum observations reveal in great detail the envelope structure of deeply
embedded young stellar objects (SMM1, SMM2, SMM3, SMM4) in the densely
star-forming Serpens Molecular Cloud. Resolved millimeter continuum emission
constrains the density structure to a radial power law with index -2.0 +/- 0.5,
and envelope masses of 8.7, 3.0, and 5.3 M_sol for SMM1, SMM3, and SMM4. The
core SMM2 does not seem to have a central condensation and may not have formed
a star yet. The molecular line observations can be described by the same
envelope model, if an additional, small amount of warm (100 K) material is
included. This probably corresponds to the inner few hundred AU of the envelope
were the temperature is high. In the interferometer beam, the molecular lines
reveal the inner regions of the envelopes, as well as interaction of the
outflow with the surrounding envelope. Bright HCO+ and HCN emission outlines
the cavities, while SiO and SO trace the direct impact of the outflow on
ambient gas. Taken together, these observations provide a first comprehensive
view of the physical and chemical structure of the envelopes of deeply embedded
young stellar objects in a clustered environment on scales between 1000 and

Police, public, and offender perceptions of body-worn video: a single jurisdictional multiple-perspective analysis
Objectives. Police, public, and offender survey responses from a single jurisdiction give a multiple-perspective insight into the use of body-worn video (BWV) cameras by police.
Methods. Police attitudinal data was collected from before (n = 190), during (n = 139), and at the conclusion (n = 221) of a BWV implementation trial. Public attitudes were collected at the conclusion of the BWV implementation trial via online survey (n = 995 respondents) and intercept survey (n = 428 respondents). Offender attitudes (n = 302) were collected in police custody over a 6-month period immediately preceding the BWV trial.
Results. The extent to which police felt BWV influenced their behavior tempered during the trial. All three perspectives were supportive of the use of BWV. The public who had encountered BWV-wearing officers and the offender sample indicated limited belief that BWV would reduce bad behavior. There was also clear contention about the policy and practice decisions around recording.
Conclusions. These findings have significance for BWV trials, commenting on the importance of (a) collecting police attitudes at multiple points, (b) separating the attitudes of public who did encounter police wearing BWV, and (c) data collection and policy for evaluation outcomes
Assessment of the dining environment on and near the campuses of fifteen post-secondary institutions
Objective: The present study evaluated the restaurant and dining venues on and near post-secondary campuses varying in institution size. Design: The Nutrition Environment Measures Survey for Restaurants (NEMS-R) was modified to evaluate restaurants as fast food, sit down and fast casual; and campus dining venues as dining halls, student unions and snack bar/cafe ́s. ANOVA with post hoc Tukey’s B and T tests were used to distinguish differences between dining venues and associated institutions by size.
Setting: The study was conducted at fifteen US post-secondary institutions, 2009–2011. Subjects: Data presented are from a sample of 175 restaurants and sixty-eight on-campus dining venues.
Results: There were minimal differences in dining halls by institution size, although medium-sized institutions as compared with small-sized institutions offered significantly more healthful side dish/salad bar items. Dining halls scored significantly higher than student unions or snack bar/cafe ́s on healthful entre ́es, side dish/salad bar and beverages offerings, but they also had the most barriers to healthful dietary habits (i.e. all-you-can-eat). No differences were found by restaurant type for NEMS-R scores for total restaurant dining environment or healthful entre ́es and barriers. Snack bars had more healthful side dishes (P 5 0?002) and fast-food restaurants had the highest level of facilitators (i.e. nutrition information; P 5 0?002).
Conclusions: Based on this evaluation in fifteen institutions, the full campus dining environment provides limited support for healthy eating and obesity prevention. The quality of campus dining environments can be improved via healthful offerings, providing nutrition information and other supports to facilitate healthy eating and prevent unwanted weight gain
The Detection and Characterization of cm Radio Continuum Emission from the Low-mass Protostar L1014-IRS
Observations by the Cores to Disk Legacy Team with the Spitzer Space
Telescope have identified a low luminosity, mid-infrared source within the
dense core, Lynds 1014, which was previously thought to harbor no internal
source. Followup near-infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations
have confirmed the protostellar nature of this source by detecting scattered
light from an outflow cavity and a weak molecular outflow. In this paper, we
report the detection of cm continuum emission with the VLA. The emission is
characterized by a quiescent, unresolved 90 uJy 6 cm source within 0.2" of the
Spitzer source. The spectral index of the quiescent component is between 6 cm and 3.6 cm. A factor of two increase in 6 cm
emission was detected during one epoch and circular polarization was marginally
detected at the level with Stokes {V/I} % . We have
searched for 22 GHz H2O maser emission toward L1014-IRS, but no masers were
detected during 7 epochs of observations between June 2004 and December 2006.
L1014-IRS appears to be a low-mass, accreting protostar which exhibits cm
emission from a thermal jet or a wind, with a variable non-thermal emission
component. The quiescent cm radio emission is noticeably above the correlation
of 3.6 cm and 6 cm luminosity versus bolometric luminosity, indicating more
radio emission than expected. We characterize the cm continuum emission in
terms of observations of other low-mass protostars, including updated
correlations of centimeter continuum emission with bolometric luminosity and
outflow force, and discuss the implications of recent larger distance estimates
