Hip abduction weakness in elite junior footballers is common but easy to correct quickly: a prospective sports team cohort based study
Background: Hip abduction weakness has never been documented on a population basis as a common finding in a healthy group of athletes and would not normally be found in an elite adolescent athlete. This study aimed to show that hip abduction weakness not only occurs in this group but also is common and easy to correct with an unsupervised home based program. Methods: A prospective sports team cohort based study was performed with thirty elite adolescent under-17 Australian Rules Footballers in the Australian Institute of Sport/Australian Football League Under-17 training academy. The players had their hip abduction performance assessed and were then instructed in a hip abduction muscle training exercise. This was performed on a daily basis for two months and then they were reassessed.Results: The results showed 14 of 28 athletes who completed the protocol had marked weakness or a side-to-side difference of more than 25% at baseline. Two months later ten players recorded an improvement of ≥ 80% in their recorded scores. The mean muscle performance on the right side improved from 151 Newton (N) to 202 N (p<0.001) while on the left, the recorded results improved from 158 N to 223 N (p<0.001). Conclusions: The baseline values show widespread profound deficiencies in hip abduction performance not previously reported. Very large performance increases can be achieved, unsupervised, in a short period of time to potentially allow large clinically significant gains. This assessment should be an integral part of preparticipation screening and assessed in those with lower limb injuries. This particular exercise should be used clinically and more research is needed to determine its injury prevention and performance enhancement implications
A ambientalização curricular de programas de Educação Física em universidades federais do Brasil
ResumoO objetivo do artigo foi analisar evidências de ambientalização curricular em programas de educação física no contexto do ensino superior brasileiro. De acordo com esse objetivo, o "corpus" de análise foi composto pelos planos de ensino de disciplinas que abordam questões ambientais em programas de educação física de Universidades Federais do Brasil. O "corpus" foi analisado a partir da Análise Textual Discursiva, metodologia que compreende: a) desmontagem dos textos (unitarização); b) estabelecimento de relações (categorização); c) captação de um novo emergente (metatexto original). As unidades de significado destacadas na etapa de unitarização foram organizadas em categorias pré-definidas a partir das características da Rede ACES para um estudo ambientalizado. A escolha desse referencial ("benchmark") se justifica por sua representatividade diante das produções científicas no campo ambiental, constituindo-se como significativo (con)texto social atual, trazendo em suas definições o resultado de embates históricos em torno da emergência/legitimação de elementos que constituem os atuais conceitos sobre o "ambiental". Esperar-se-ia, assim, que pelo menos os conceitos chaves de cada categoria fossem contemplados pelas propostas presentes em planos de ensino de disciplinas que propõem um diálogo entre o campo ambiental e o campo da educação física. No entanto, os resultados da pesquisa mostram uma realidade bem diferente, colocando em evidência as práticas esportivas e recreativas na natureza como foco quase que exclusivo das disciplinas que abordam questões ambientais em programas de educação física de Universidades Federais do Brasil. Nos argumentos conclusivos são apresentadas significativas evidências sobre as dimensões dos discursos ambientais que estão sendo incorporados pelos currículos de educação física no âmbito do ensino (superior), assim como novas/"alternativas" perspectivas que emergem nos encontros entre o campo ambiental e o campo da educação física
Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Contractile Properties by Radial Displacement: The Case for Tensiomyography
Skeletal muscle operates as a near-constant volume system; as such muscle shortening during contraction is transversely linked to radial deformation. Therefore, to assess contractile properties of skeletal muscle, radial displacement can be evoked and measured. Mechanomyography measures muscle radial displacement and during the last 20 years, tensiomyography has become the most commonly used and widely reported technique among the various methodologies of mechanomyography. Tensiomyography has been demonstrated to reliably measure peak radial displacement during evoked muscle twitch, as well as muscle twitch speed. A number of parameters can be extracted from the tensiomyography displacement/time curve and the most commonly used and reliable appear to be peak radial displacement and contraction time. The latter has been described as a valid non-invasive means of characterising skeletal muscle, based on fibre-type composition. Over recent years, applications of tensiomyography measurement within sport and exercise have appeared, with applications relating to injury, recovery and performance. Within the present review, we evaluate the perceived strengths and weaknesses of tensiomyography with regard to its efficacy within applied sports medicine settings. We also highlight future tensiomyography areas that require further investigation. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to critically examine the existing evidence surrounding tensiomyography as a tool within the field of sports medicine
