    High Temperature Stability of Onion-Like Carbon vs Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite

    Abstract The thermodynamic stability of onion-like carbon (OLC) nanostructures with respect to highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was determined in the interval 765–1030 K by the electromotive force (emf) measurements of solid electrolyte galvanic cell: (Low) Pt|Cr3C2,CrF2,OLC|CaF2s.c.|Cr3C2,CrF2,HOPG|Pt (High). The free energy change of transformation HOPG = OLC was found positive below 920.6 K crossing the zero value at this temperature. Its trend with temperature was well described by a 3rd degree polynomial. The unexpected too high values of LDrHT LT P ~DcPðTÞ jointly to the HR-TEM, STEM and EELS evidences that showed OLC completely embedded in rigid cages made of a Cr3C2/CrF2 matrix, suggested that carbon in the electrodes experienced different internal pressures. This was confirmed by the evaluation under constant volume of dP dT by the a k ratio for OLC (0.5 MPa K21) and HOPG (8 Pa K21) where a and k are the isobaric thermal expansion and isothermal compressibility coefficients, respectively. The temperature dependency of the pressure was derived and utilized to calculate the enthalpy and entropy changes as function of temperature and pressure. The highest value of the internal pressure experienced by OLC was calculated to be about 7 GPa at the highest temperature. At 920.6 K, DrH and DrS values are 95.8 kJ mol21 and 104.1 JK21 mol21, respectively. The surface contributions to the energetic of the system were evaluated and they were found negligible compared with the bulk terms. As a consequence of the high internal pressure, the values of the enthalpy and entropy changes were mainly attributed to the formation of carbon defects in OLC considered as multishell fullerenes.     Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate by transesterification of propylene carbonate with methanol on ceo2-la2o3 oxides prepared by the soft template method

    In this study, CeO2, La2O3, and CeO2-La2O3 mixed oxide catalysts with different Ce/La molar ratios were prepared by the soft template method and characterized by different techniques, including inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. NH3 and CO2 adsorption microcalorimetry was also used for assessing the acid and base surface properties, respectively. The behavior of the oxides as catalysts for the dimethyl carbonate synthesis by the transesterification of propylene carbonate with methanol, at 160 °C under autogenic pressure, was studied in a stainless-steel batch reactor. The activity of the catalysts was found to increase with an increase in the basic sites density. The formation of dimethyl carbonate was favored on medium-strength and weak basic sites, while it underwent decomposition on the strong ones. Several parasitic reactions occurred during the transformation of propylene carbonate, depending on the basic and acidic features of the catalysts.     MCM-41 supported co-based bimetallic catalysts for aqueous phase transformation of glucose to biochemicals

    The transformation of glucose into valuable biochemicals was carried out on different MCM-41-supported metallic and bimetallic (Co, Co-Fe, Co-Mn, Co-Mo) catalysts and under different reaction conditions (150 °C, 3 h; 200 °C, 0.5 h; 250 °C, 0.5 h). All catalysts were characterized using N2 physisorption, Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR), Raman, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) techniques. According to the N2-physisorption results, a high surface area and mesoporous structure of the support were appropriate for metal dispersion, reactant diffusion and the formation of bioproducts. Reaction conditions, bimetals synergetic effects and the amount and strength of catalyst acid sites were the key factors affecting the catalytic activity and biochemical selectivity. Sever reaction conditions including high temperature and high catalyst acidity led to the formation mainly of solid humins. The NH3-TPD results demonstrated the alteration of acidity in different bimetallic catalysts. The 10Fe10CoSiO2 catalyst (MCM-41 supported 10 wt. þ, 10 wt. %Co) possessing weak acid sites displayed the best catalytic activity with the highest carbon balance and desired product selectivity in mild reaction condition. Valuable biochemicals such as fructose, levulinic acid, ethanol and hydroxyacetone were formed over this catalyst

    Oxidación selectiva de sulfuros orgánicos catalizada por heteropolifosfotungstatos como bulk y soportados en γ-Al2O3 y SiO2

    Se exploró la actividad catalítica en oxidación de sulfuros aromáticos de los heteropoli-fosfotungstatos: Na8H(PW9O34) (PW9) y B-α-[M(II)4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- con M= Co(II) y Cu(II) (PMW) como bulk y soportados sobre γ-Al2O3 y SiO2 alternativamente, utilizando oxidantes “limpios”, en dos reacciones test: oxidación de Dibenzotiofeno y Difenilsulfuro como sustratos en batch, utilizando t-BuOOH como oxidante. Se procuró correlacionar las respectivas propiedades físico-químicas con la actividad. Las fases como bulk no catalizaron la oxidación de dibenzotiofeno, presentando actividad solo soportadas en γ-Al2O3. Sin embargo, todos los heteropolitungstatos estudiados catalizaron la oxidación del difenilsulfuro con mayor conversión y alta selectividad a difenilsulfóxido al estar soportados tanto en v-Al2O3 como en SiO2

    Patients with an unexplained microsatellite instable tumour have a low risk of familial cancer

    The cancer risk is unknown for those families in which a microsatellite instable tumour is neither explained by MLH1 promoter methylation nor by a germline mutation in a mismatch repair (MMR) gene. Such information is essential for genetic counselling. Families suspected of Lynch syndrome (n=614) were analysed for microsatellite instability, MLH1 promoter methylation and/or germline mutations in MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2. Characteristics of the 76 families with a germline mutation (24 MLH1, 2 PMS2, 32 MSH2, and 18 MSH6) were compared with those of 18 families with an unexplained microsatellite instable tumour. The mean age at diagnosis of the index patients in both groups was comparable at 44 years. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the loss of an MMR protein. Together this suggests germline inactivation of a known gene. The Amsterdam II criteria were fulfilled in 50/75 families (66%) that carried a germline mutation in an MMR gene and in only 2/18 families (11%) with an unexplained microsatellite instable tumour (P<0.0001). Current diagnostic strategies can detect almost all highly penetrant MMR gene mutations. Patients with an as yet unexplained microsatellite instable tumour likely carry a different type of mutation that confers a lower risk of cancer for relatives

    Early onset MSI-H colon cancer with MLH1 promoter methylation, is there a genetic predisposition?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To investigate the etiology of <it>MLH1 </it>promoter methylation in mismatch repair (MMR) mutation-negative early onset MSI-H colon cancer. As this type of colon cancer is associated with high ages, young patients bearing this type of malignancy are rare and could provide additional insight into the etiology of sporadic MSI-H colon cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied a set of 46 MSI-H colon tumors cases with <it>MLH1 </it>promoter methylation which was enriched for patients with an age of onset below 50 years (n = 13). Tumors were tested for CIMP marker methylation and mutations linked to methylation: <it>BRAF, KRAS</it>, <it>GADD45A </it>and the <it>MLH1 </it>-93G>A polymorphism. When available, normal colon and leukocyte DNA was tested for <it>GADD45A </it>mutations and germline <it>MLH1 </it>methylation. SNP array analysis was performed on a subset of tumors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We identified two cases (33 and 60 years) with <it>MLH1 </it>germline promoter methylation. <it>BRAF </it>mutations were less frequent in colon cancer patients below 50 years relative to patients above 50 years (p-value: 0.044). CIMP-high was infrequent and related to <it>BRAF </it>mutations in patients below 50 years. In comparison with published controls the G>A polymorphism was associated with our cohort. Although similar distribution of the pathogenic A allele was observed in the patients with an age of onset above and below 50 years, the significance for the association was lost for the group under 50 years. <it>GADD45A </it>sequencing yielded an unclassified variant. Tumors from both age groups showed infrequent copy number changes and loss-of-heterozygosity.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Somatic or germline <it>GADD45A </it>mutations did not explain sporadic MSI-H colon cancer. Although germline <it>MLH1 </it>methylation was found in two individuals, locus-specific somatic <it>MLH1 </it>hypermethylation explained the majority of sporadic early onset MSI-H colon cancer cases. Our data do not suggest an intrinsic tendency for CpG island hypermethylation in these early onset MSI-H tumors other than through somatic mutation of <it>BRAF</it>.</p
