    Hypoxia Modulates the Adenosinergic Neural Network

    The aim of this study was to review the latest findings about the neural plasticity on the adenosinergic neural network after the exposition to hypoxia. Identification of the neuromorphology that supports the physiological adaptations underlying the response of organisms to environmental factors including injurious exposures (specifically hypoxia) has been one of the major research challenges in biomedicine. To know these responses would connect the metabolic needs and the vegetative neuronal networks in an integrated way. Hypoxia refers to a state in which oxygen supply is insufficient and several neural cardiorespiratory structures are responsible for correcting and preventing its effects. Although hypoxia is often a pathological condition, variations in arterial oxygen concentrations can be part of the normal physiological responses, for example, during hypoventilation training or strenuous physical exercise. Also, hypoxia is a serious consequence of preterm birth in the neonate. Neural plasticity is a persistent change in the morphology and/or function based on prior experiences, and it is crucial for understanding its effects. Plasticity is well evident when the triggering experience occurs early in life; but in the case of respiratory control plasticity, could also be present in adult life. The regulation of adenosinergic neural network maturation, especially in central cardiorespiratory areas, could provide new perspectives in respiratory new‐born distress symptoms

    Reference values for bone mineral density in healthy Mexican children and adolescents

    Introduction: Clinical assessment of bone health by Dual‐Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) in the paediatric population requires robust reference values. The International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) recommends that country/regional reference values ideally should be used to improve precision in bone health assessment. / Objective: The aim of this study was to provide reference values for relevant bone health variables for healthy Mexican children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years. / Methods: This was a cross-sectional, stratified and population-based study, that measured a representative sample of healthy Mexican children and adolescents with DXA. We constructed age- and sex-smoothed reference values for areal bone mineral density (aBMD) of total body less head (TBLH), total body (TB), lumbar spine (LS), and bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) for LS, by means of Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS). / Results: Reference data including the 3th, 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th and 97th centiles, along with lambda (L), mu (M) and sigma (S) values, are given for each variable of interest for each sex at 0.25 years intervals. Reference values relative to height and Tanner-stage for both sexes are also provided. Finally, formulas to enable Z score estimation for clinical use are also presented. / Conclusions: The sex, age, height, Tanner-stage and ethnic-specific reference data provided in this study should enable more precise assessment of bone health in the Mexican paediatric population. The data presented may also allow for future evaluation of potential similarities and differences across different ethnic groups

    Mejora del proceso de surtido de pedidos en la distribución de material didáctico a nivel nacional

    El presente reporte recopila el análisis y resultados obtenidos del proyecto trabajado de la mano con la empresa CIME. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo: “La implementación de la propuesta de layout en zona de picking y de stock, la creación y seguimiento de una cultura de 5´s en los empleados y estandarización del proceso de surtido”. Se realizó el análisis y ejecución del diseño de la distribución del almacén el cual posibilitará la ubicación y colocación de áreas de trabajo que permitirán llevar a cabo un empaque eficiente, efectivo y ergonómico. Asimismo, se ejecutó la limpieza, delimitación de áreas y acomodo de producto para la obtención del punto anterior. Logrando de esta manera el diseño del layout del almacén, con sus respectivas zonas: zona de picking y zona de stock, así como con sus correspondientes capacidades de producto de acuerdo con la demanda. Por otro lado, se realizó la simulación del proceso de surtido con el objetivo de reafirmar y sustentar resultados óptimos para dicho proceso.ITESO, A.C

    Obesogenic Lifestyle and Its Influence on Adiposity in Children and Adolescents, Evidence from Mexico

    Overweight (OW) and obesity (OB) during childhood/adolescence are major public health problems in Mexico. Several obesogenic lifestyle (OL) risk factors have been identified, but the burden and consequences of them in Mexican children/adolescents remain unclear. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of OL components and describe their relationships with adiposity, and OW/OB. A population-based cross-sectional study of Mexican children/adolescents with nutritional assessment, data collection on daily habits and adiposity as fat-mass index (FMI) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was performed. Individual OL-components: "inactivity," "excessive screen time," "insufficient sleep," "unhealthy-diet", were defined according to non-adherence to previously published healthy recommendations. RESULTS: 1449 subjects were assessed between March 2015 to April 2018. Sixteen percent of subjects had all four OL-components, 40% had three, 35% had two, 9% had one, and 0.5% had none. A cumulative OL score showed a significant dose-response effect with FMI. The combination of inactivity, excessive screen time, and insufficient sleep showed the highest risk association to OW/OB and higher values of FMI. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of OL-components was extremely high and associated with increased adiposity and OW/OB. Several interventions are needed to revert this major public health threat

    Crambescidin-816 Acts as a Fungicidal with More Potency than Crambescidin-800 and -830, Inducing Cell Cycle Arrest, Increased Cell Size and Apoptosis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    In this paper, we show the effect of crambescidin-816, -800, and -830 on Saccharomyces cerevisiae viability. We determined that, of the three molecules tested, crambescidin-816 was the most potent. Based on this result, we continued by determining the effect of crambescidin-816 on the cell cycle of this yeast. The compound induced cell cycle arrest in G2/M followed by an increase in cell DNA content and size. When the type of cell death was analyzed, we observed that crambescidin-816 induced apoptosis.     Evidence for divergent patterns of local selection driving venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes (\u3ci\u3eCrotalus scutulatus\u3c/i\u3e)

    Snake venoms represent an enriched system for investigating the evolutionary processes that lead to complex and dynamic trophic adaptations. It has long been hypothesized that natural selection may drive geographic variation in venom composition, yet previous studies have lacked the population genetic context to examine these patterns. We leverage range-wide sampling of Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus) and use a combination of venom, morphological, phylogenetic, population genetic, and environmental data to characterize the striking dichotomy of neurotoxic (Type A) and hemorrhagic (Type B) venoms throughout the range of this species. We find that three of the four previously identified major lineages within C. scutulatus possess a combination of Type A, Type B, and a ‘mixed’ Type A + B venom phenotypes, and that fixation of the two main venom phenotypes occurs on a more fine geographic scale than previously appreciated. We also find that Type A + B individuals occur in regions of inferred introgression, and that this mixed phenotype is comparatively rare. Our results support strong directional local selection leading to fixation of alternative venom phenotypes on a fine geographic scale, and are inconsistent with balancing selection to maintain both phenotypes within a single population. Our comparisons to biotic and abiotic factors further indicate that venom phenotype correlates with fang morphology and climatic variables. We hypothesize that links to fang morphology may be indicative of co-evolution of venom and other trophic adaptations, and that climatic variables may be linked to prey distributions and/or physiology, which in turn impose selection pressures on snake venoms

    Attaching and effacing (A/E) lesion formation by enteropathogenic E. coli on human intestinal mucosa is dependent on non-LEE effectors

    Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is a human pathogen that causes acute and chronic pediatric diarrhea. The hallmark of EPEC infection is the formation of attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions in the intestinal epithelium. Formation of A/E lesions is mediated by genes located on the pathogenicity island locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE), which encode the adhesin intimin, a type III secretion system (T3SS) and six effectors, including the essential translocated intimin receptor (Tir). Seventeen additional effectors are encoded by genes located outside the LEE, in insertion elements and prophages. Here, using a stepwise approach, we generated an EPEC mutant lacking the entire effector genes (EPEC0) and intermediate mutants. We show that EPEC0 contains a functional T3SS. An EPEC mutant expressing intimin but lacking all the LEE effectors but Tir (EPEC1) was able to trigger robust actin polymerization in HeLa cells and mucin-producing intestinal LS174T cells. However, EPEC1 was unable to form A/E lesions on human intestinal in vitro organ cultures (IVOC). Screening the intermediate mutants for genes involved in A/E lesion formation on IVOC revealed that strains lacking non-LEE effector/s have a marginal ability to form A/E lesions. Furthermore, we found that Efa1/LifA proteins are important for A/E lesion formation efficiency in EPEC strains lacking multiple effectors. Taken together, these results demonstrate the intricate relationships between T3SS effectors and the essential role non-LEE effectors play in A/E lesion formation on mucosal surfaces
