Evaluation Of Paradigms For A P300 Based Brain Computer Interface Speller

    Get PDF
This thesis was written to compare a few different paradigms for the brain computer interface (BCI) virtual speller using the P300 signal. The paradigms consist of electrodes to record electroencephalogram signal (EEG), software to analyze the data, and a computer where the subject\u27s EEG is the input for a virtual keyboard. There were three experiments that were constructed to test the accuracy, region error, and adjacency error among the paradigms. The first experiment was the comparison of four paradigms: the single character (SC), row/column (RC), region based 1 (RB1), and region based 2 (RB2) paradigms. Six subjects were considered for that experiment and the accuracy of each paradigm and region errors were considered. The second experiment was designed to determine the errors per region for the region based paradigm. Eight subjects were considered for this experiment and the results concluded that region 4 (middle of the paradigm) had the most errors. The last experiment performed was the comparison of the SC, RC, and RB2 paradigms. This experiment took into consideration the accuracies of each paradigm, region errors, along with errors due to the adjacency problem. Overall, the three experiments shared the same results with the RB paradigms being slightly better than the RC paradigm in accuracy and both the RC and RB paradigms being statistically better than the SC paradigm

Does specialization matter? An investigation of female DI and DIII soccer players and the pathways that led them to the collegiate level

    Get PDF
This paper investigates whether current female collegiate soccer players decided to diversify or specialize in high school, while noting the key influential factors that impacted their decision making process. During the 2012-2013 season, a survey was completed by 114 female collegiate (DI and DIII) soccer players. The findings indicated that there is no difference between female athletes who specialized or diversified in high school in regards to playing at the collegiate level. The results from this study attempt to further clarify previous research that examines if specialization or diversification in high school is necessary to reach the collegiate level

Mixed Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation on Depressive Symptomatology in Parkinson’s Disease: A Review of Randomized Clinical Trials

    Get PDF
Although ~50% of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) experience depression, treatment for this important and debilitating comorbidity is relatively understudied. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been increasingly utilized for the management of tremors in progressive PD. Several preliminary studies have shown the potential benefit of DBS for non-motor PD symptoms such as depression. Here, we critically evaluate seven recent randomized clinical trials of the effectiveness of DBS in reducing depressive symptomatology among individuals with PD. Findings are mixed for the effectiveness of DBS as a treatment for depression in PD. Our review suggests that this is due, in large part, to the anatomical and methodological variation across the DBS studies. We provide a comprehensive discussion of these variations and highlight the need to conduct larger, more controlled studies aimed specifically at evaluating the treatment of depression in PD patients

B553: Consumer Packages for Maine Mcintosh Apples

    Get PDF
Three kinds of consumer packages for apples were developed for testing in the 1955-56 marketing season. In developing these packages, the authors modified the jumble-pack, polyethylene package in a way that would protect the fruit from most of the bruising and still maintain almost complete visibility of the fruit. One consumer package developed was a long narrow polyethylene bag, another was a polyethylene bag with a divider insert, and the third package had a cell partition placed in a similar plastic bag. All three packages were well accepted by consumers in the Portland market.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/aes_bulletin/1085/thumbnail.jp

The choreography, production and notation of a long dance entitled "A love dream"

    Get PDF
The subject matter of "A Love Dream" is based upon the mythological story of Cupid and Psyche. In this myth the irate Venus, losing the worship of her people, seeks revenge upon the beautiful mortal Psyche through her son Cupid who falls in love with the innocent girl. Considering the required length for the dance, the story of Cupid and Psyche provided an abundance of material adaptable to dance. Few people were necessary for the production. Moreover, a desire to choreograph a narrative in which it would be possible to create characters with definite personalities and to work out the sequence of the plot carefully and clearly, influenced the choice of subject matter. The use of personalities in a plot provided a more interesting problem in notating the dance by the Laban System of Dance notation. The myth of Cupid and Psyche, therefore, served these purposes to the fullest

Metal composition of ambient PM2.5 influences severity of allergic airways disease in mice.

Children living in Hettstedt in eastern Germany have been reported to have a higher prevalence of sensitization to common aeroallergens than another cohort living in the neighboring city of Zerbst; these differences correlated with the presence of industrial air pollution. Samples of fine particulate matter (< 2.5 micro m aerodynamic diameter; PM(2.5)) collected in Hettstedt in 1999 had several-fold higher levels of zinc, magnesium, lead, copper, and cadmium than samples from Zerbst. To determine if the results from epidemiologic studies could be repeated in an animal model, we administered PM(2.5) from Hettstedt and Zerbst to ovalbumin-allergic mice. In Balb/c mice, PM(2.5) from Hettstedt, but not PM(2.5) from Zerbst or control filter extract, caused a significant increase in immediate responses to ovalbumin challenge when aspirated 2 hr before challenge, but not when aspirated immediately before sensitization 2 weeks earlier. Antigen-specific IgE was increased by Hettstedt PM(2.5) whether administered before sensitization or challenge. Airway responsiveness to methacholine aerosol and lung inflammatory cell numbers were significantly increased only in allergic mice exposed to Hettstedt PM(2.5) before challenge. Both Hettstedt and Zerbst PM(2.5) significantly increased lung injury parameters and proinflammatory cytokines. These results are consistent with epidemiologic findings and show that metal composition of ambient PM(2.5) influences the severity of allergic respiratory disease
