    Functional Genomics of Wood Quality and Properties

    Genomics promises to enrich the investigations of biology and biochemistry. Current advancements in genomics have major implications for genetic improvement in animals, plants, and microorganisms, and for our understanding of cell growth, development, differentiation, and communication. Significant progress has been made in the understanding of plant genomics in recent years, and the area continues to progress rapidly. Functional genomics offers enormous potential to tree improvement and the understanding of gene expression in this area of science worldwide. In this review we focus on functional genomics of wood quality and properties in trees, mainly based on progresses made in genomics study of Pinus and Populus. The aims of this review are to summarize the current status of functional genomics including: (1) Gene discovery; (2) EST and genomic sequencing; (3) From EST to functional genomics; (4) Approaches to functional analysis; (5) Engineering lignin biosynthesis; (6) Modification of cell wall biogenesis; and (7) Molecular modelling. Functional genomics has been greatly invested worldwide and will be important in identifying candidate genes whose function is critical to all aspects of plant growth, development, differentiation, and defense. Forest biotechnology industry will significantly benefit from the advent of functional genomics of wood quality and properties

    Pulmonary Endpoints (Lung Carcinomas and Asbestosis) Following Inhalation Exposure to Asbestos

    Lung carcinomas and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis) occur in asbestos workers. Understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases is complicated because of potential confounding factors, such as smoking, which is not a risk factor in mesothelioma. The modes of action (MOA) of various types of asbestos in the development of lung cancers, asbestosis, and mesotheliomas appear to be different. Moreover, asbestos fibers may act differentially at various stages of these diseases, and have different potencies as compared to other naturally occurring and synthetic fibers. This literature review describes patterns of deposition and retention of various types of asbestos and other fibers after inhalation, methods of translocation within the lung, and dissolution of various fiber types in lung compartments and cells in vitro. Comprehensive dose-response studies at fiber concentrations inhaled by humans as well as bivariate size distributions (lengths and widths), types, and sources of fibers are rarely defined in published studies and are needed. Species-specific responses may occur. Mechanistic studies have some of these limitations, but have suggested that changes in gene expression (either fiber-catalyzed directly or by cell elaboration of oxidants), epigenetic changes, and receptor-mediated or other intracellular signaling cascades may play roles in various stages of the development of lung cancers or asbestosis

    Autonomous Navigation of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle in Cluttered Environment

    Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) extend operators' capabilities in many applications, especially in dangerous and hazardous situations. They are easy to deploy, fast to respond, and have a closer and more detailed observation of the environment. They are widely used for target detection, target recognition, and rescue missions. Applications include mapping, navigation, localization, ordnance disposal, and many other dull, dirty, and dangerous applications. The main advantage is that they pose no threat to human operators and are cost effective. However, in order to utilize their full potential, they are required to operate in areas that are full of obstacles such as in terrain, urban environments, battlefields, etc. Cal Poly Pomona is working on the development of fully autonomous UGVs that are capable of autonomous target acquisition and navigation to the target. Once the target is acquired, it is sent to the path planning algorithm. Vision system uses two stage optical object recognition using OpenCV2, and can detect as many targets as are visibly discernable. Primary target's latitude and longitude are calculated using current robot state. The route planning system is designed to safely direct the UGV to the target's location. The system incorporates obstacle and collision avoidance capabilities, and finds a navigable path to the target. The routing itself is done using a D*lite path planning algorithm that functions using a map that is populated using objects found by the LIDAR system. For initial testing, it is assumed that the area of operation is sparse, there is no instantly appearing targets, and that the area of operation is flat. Simulation and experimental results will be shown. In future, the research will be directed towards using this methodology for more complex scenarios where no assumption will be made on the area of operation and number of targets

    Videogames as Self-Involving Interactive Fictions

    This article explores the nature and theoretical import of a hitherto neglected class of fictions which we term ‘self-involving interactive fictions’ (SIIFs). SIIFs are interactive fictions, but they differ from standard examples of interactive fictions by being, in some important sense, about those who consume them. In order to better understand the nature of SIIFs, and the ways in which they differ from other fictions, we focus primarily on the most prominent example of the category: video-game fictions. We argue that appreciating the self-involving nature of video-game fictions is key to understanding various otherwise puzzling phenomena concerning the ways in which consumers respond to them. Video-game fictions are, however, far from being the only extant example of this class; and we suggest that the recent philosophical interest in video games would be better focused on the wider class of self-involving interactive fictions

The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively.
