What are the educational needs of an adult layperson concerning world mission? What ought an introductory adult mission education study course attempt to teach? This thesis endeavors to answer the question in three chapters. Chapter One articulates a concise theology of mission. Rooted in Scripture, especially the mission commands of the risen Savior, and drawing on the Apostles\u27 Creed, The Book of Concord, and Martin Luther, Chapter One sketches the who, what, where, when, why, and how of God\u27s mission. Chapter Two surveys mission professionals to discover what they believe an introductory adult study course on world mission ought to teach. The first section collects and comments on responses from 78mission educators. The second section overviews courses currently published. Chapter Three proposes objectives for a ten session introductory study course on world mission. The objectives include cognitive, emotive, and behavioral elements for each session, as related to that session\u27s theme and Biblical basis

Gendered Leadership: Men and Women Governor’s Responses to COVID-19

To alleviate a large-scale crisis, leaders have to choose mitigation strategies to best address the issue at hand while also avoiding the spread of panic among their constituents. This balancing act can be challenging and was especially demanding during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic was not only a global health crisis, but also caused worldwide social, economic, and political turmoil. For three years, the pandemic riddled the United States with disease, economic hardship, food insecurity, and unemployment. Since its rise, COVID-19 has been the foremost concern on policy agendas nationwide. Governors, in particular, played a significant part in leading Americans through the pandemic by declaring stay-at-home orders, facilitating vaccine rollouts, and promoting economic stability in their state. One question that has emerged is whether women governors handled the pandemic differently than their men counterparts, as it has been historically proven that leadership styles differ greatly by gender. This thesis examines the relationship between governors’ gender and COVID-related death rates and confirmed case rates. In doing so, I answer the following: How have responses to COVID-19 differed between men and women governors across the United States? In comparing nine women governors with their closest matching men counterparts, I found no major difference when it came to total deaths per capita and total confirmed cases per capita from January 16th, 2020 to January 4th, 202

The Application of Hybridized Genetic Algorithms to the Protein Folding Problem

    Get PDF
The protein folding problem consists of attempting to determine the native conformation of a protein given its primary structure. This study examines various methods of hybridizing a genetic algorithm implementation in order to minimize an energy function and predict the conformation (structure) of Met-enkephalin. Genetic Algorithms are semi-optimal algorithms designed to explore and exploit a search space. The genetic algorithm uses selection, recombination, and mutation operators on populations of strings which represent possible solutions to the given problem. One step in solving the protein folding problem is the design of efficient energy minimization techniques. A conjugate gradient minimization technique is described and tested with different replacement frequencies. Baidwinian, Lamarckian, and probabilistic Lamarckian evolution are all tested. Another extension of simple genetic algorithms can be accomplished with niching. Niching works by de-emphasizing solutions based on their proximity to other solutions in the space. Several variations of niching are tested. Experiments are conducted to determine the benefits of each hybridization technique versus each other and versus the genetic algorithm by itself. The experiments are geared toward trying to find the lowest possible energy and hence the minimum conformation of Met-enkephalin. In the experiments, probabilistic Lamarckian strategies were successful in achieving energies below that of the published minimum in QUANTA

Imperativo. Ética. ABSTRACT: This present paper deals with the issue of recognition as an integral and fundamental part of the phiposophies of Hegel and Kant. In a first moment is the analysis of the structure of the formation of consciousness in Hegel and, related to this, the analysis of the dialectic of the master and the slave presented in the Phenomenology of Spirit as a form of the authentication of the own being. In a second moment is the analysis of the issue of the recognition in the ethical relations from the kantian formalism based on his two imperatives, the categorical and the practical, and in the relation of reciprocity. Finally, we present the reception of Kant's thought by Hegel, his critique to formalism, and the philosophical evidence that man finds himself in the other. As a whole, we have the specification of the relational quality of recognition as a substancial aspect for the development of one's own being in ethical relationships. Keywords: Recognition.

This research had as general objective to understand how the professional development process of music teacher occurs from its relation with the school of basic education. The conceptual view of place of Tuan and Lévy and Lussault, of professional development of Nóvoa and of biographical construction of Delory-Momberger, as well as autobiographical research and narratives constitute the theoretical-methodological reference of this research. The study was carried out through narrative interviews with four licensed teachers, which are experienced and active in basic education schools in Porto Alegre, RS. The analysis of the data was based on the macro-themes that emerged from the interview data: the work in the basic education school; the relationship with the school subjects - the other; the self-training. These macro themes are perceptible marks in the professional development process of the music teacher. The analysis indicates that the professional development of each teacher is unique and personal, since it is constituted through experiences. The other, the self and the construction of the self with the other - the place, are the axes that sustain the professional development of the teachers. It is in alterity that the teacher develops him/herself. Therefore, to recognize oneself in the experience at and with the school, there is a condition for the professional development of music teacher. This experience with the place is the toca. The toca is an internal place of formation, which, by amalgamating personal and professional formation becomes a promoter of professional development. These dynamics of the process of professional development comes from the constitution of the toca (ethos), of its dwelling, in which the teachers construct place in themselves, being constituted biographically from the school (place). The present research seeks to give greater visibility to the relations between the teacher and the school as a basis for the professional development of the teacher, thinking of the school not as a background, but of the complexity of its spatial dimension, as a way to understand the process in which it allies the training with the acting and providing clues to think about the training of teachers in undergraduate music courses

Are Seasonal Interactions Mediated by Stress Responses in a Short-Distance Migratory Bird?

    Get PDF
Various stages within animals' annual cycle can affect one another and, thus, are not discrete events in time. What occurs during one period of the annual cycle (e.g. non-breeding) can alter the success or survival of animals in another period (e.g. breeding) of their annual cycle through non-lethal factors. These effects are termed “seasonal interactions” and are fueling a rapidly growing body of knowledge advancing our understanding of how populations are limited across the full annual cycle. In order to examine these seasonal interactions, this study aims to determine if they occur across nonbreeding stages in a short-distance migratory bird, the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis). These sparrows are quite abundant throughout the eastern U.S. and have well defined annual cycles. Nearly all studies examining seasonal interactions have focused on neotropical migrants and effects on the breeding season. I measured physiological stress during nonbreeding stages to determine if seasonal interactions exist between the stages of molt, wintering, and spring migration. I found that stress levels (measured by corticosterone in feathers) varied by stage and sex and higher stress in molt correlated with decreasing fat reserves during winter. However, higher stress in winter correlated with increasing fat reserves during winter, and later departure for spring migration. Thus, it appears stress hormones and fat interact in complex ways across the annual cycle. A complete grasp of the full annual cycle, and not just the breeding season, is critical for conservation as the world is experiencing a drastic decline in “common” migratory birds, like the white-throated sparrow. No embargoAcademic Major: Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlif
