During an archaeological investigation in the northwest of Autun, near the Augustan rampart, a fragment of a statuary group was found in the intersection of two ancient streets. Resting on the road surface, it seems to have been abandoned during Late Antiquity or the high Middle Ages. It consists of a cuirassed figure likely represented from behind. It was a gigantomachy carved in the round (on three sides), the principal side was damaged by the fracture of the cut arkose (the local geological beds are unable to provide the height needed for this group). On the drapery, we can see the head of a snake coiled in an aggressive attitude, with its fangs bared. Several interpretations are available to us : the snake is the end of a giantâ s legs or it is the lucky snake of Minerva, who would be our armored goddess. The lateral fissure (to the right) reveals the path of the cuirassâs festoons and tear along the entire height could easily match the removal of a shield that would have added an element of stability. Finally, the last item on the left is a kind of disarticulated muscular torso of a giant, perhaps Alcyoneus, who was dismembered by Minerva
International audienceDuring the excavations of CarrĂ© Jaude 2 in Clermont-Ferrand, a building, identified as a schola, has been partially uncovered adjacent to a vast public square. Built in the middle of the 2nd century AD, it was burnt down, during the 3rd quarter of the 3rd century. A series of service rooms located to the south of richly decorated public latrines, with an ornamental basin, are mainly devoted to activities such as cooking: a main kitchen, equipped with two tiled ovens and a rectangular stonework construction which could be a raised hob; a room equipped with a flat tiled hearth and manhole access to a drain; another room with a hydraulic concrete floor probably contained a water tank; a utility room contained a large stone mortar set into the floor; a storeroom for stocking foodstuffs and crockery. The interpretation of this archaeological complex is also documented by a religious inscription uncovered in the demolition layers of one of the rooms and the analysis of the finds and the plant and animal remains.
International audienceIn 2011, an archaeological evaluation was carried out in the centre of the Roman city of Augustodunum (Autun) on a plot of over 1 ha. This operation afforded the opportunity to explore parts of two insulae along the main street, the so-called cardo maximus, an area that has benefited from recent advances in knowledge. The first insula hosts a high-status domus strongly resembling those of "Balbius Iassus" and the "Ătui dâOr", excavated in the vicinity in the 1970s; the second, addressed in this paper, contains the remains of a vast monumental complex covering approximately 900 m2. Most probably built at the beginning of the 2nd c. on the ruins of earlier houses, it was thoroughly restructured at the end of the 3rd c. or the beginning of the 4th and seems to have been abandoned then partly dismantled from the start of the 5th c. To judge by its plan and its situation within a residential area located in the immediate vicinity of the monumental centre, the building of the beginning of the late-antique period exhibits the functional and topographical features of a schola of exceptional size. Comparison with literary sources would seem to indicate that the remains are those of the scholae Maenianae, known from a speech delivered in AD 298 by Eumenius, a local notable, in the presence of the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis. Only further excavation and the discovery of an inscription could definitively prove this initial hypothesis. The discovery of such a vast complex, whatever function is assigned to it, vividly illustrates the importance of the monumental equipment of Autun under the Early Empire as well as the restoration work that took place in the city at the turn of the 300s.Un diagnostic dâarchĂ©ologie prĂ©ventive a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ© en 2011 dans le centre de la ville antique dâAugustodunum sur une parcelle de plus dâun hectare.
Maternal outcomes and risk factors for COVID-19 severity among pregnant women.
Pregnant women may be at higher risk of severe complications associated with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which may lead to obstetrical complications. We performed a case control study comparing pregnant women with severe coronavirus disease 19 (cases) to pregnant women with a milder form (controls) enrolled in the COVI-Preg international registry cohort between March 24 and July 26, 2020. Risk factors for severity, obstetrical and immediate neonatal outcomes were assessed. A total of 926 pregnant women with a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 were included, among which 92 (9.9%) presented with severe COVID-19 disease. Risk factors for severe maternal outcomes were pulmonary comorbidities [aOR 4.3, 95% CI 1.9-9.5], hypertensive disorders [aOR 2.7, 95% CI 1.0-7.0] and diabetes [aOR2.2, 95% CI 1.1-4.5]. Pregnant women with severe maternal outcomes were at higher risk of caesarean section [70.7% (nâ=â53/75)], preterm delivery [62.7% (nâ=â32/51)] and newborns requiring admission to the neonatal intensive care unit [41.3% (nâ=â31/75)]. In this study, several risk factors for developing severe complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection among pregnant women were identified including pulmonary comorbidities, hypertensive disorders and diabetes. Obstetrical and neonatal outcomes appear to be influenced by the severity of maternal disease
Identification of genetic variants associated with Huntington's disease progression: a genome-wide association study
Background Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure. Methods We generated a progression score on the basis of principal component analysis of prospectively acquired longitudinal changes in motor, cognitive, and imaging measures in the 218 indivduals in the TRACK-HD cohort of Huntington's disease gene mutation carriers (data collected 2008â11). We generated a parallel progression score using data from 1773 previously genotyped participants from the European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY study of Huntington's disease mutation carriers (data collected 2003â13). We did a genome-wide association analyses in terms of progression for 216 TRACK-HD participants and 1773 REGISTRY participants, then a meta-analysis of these results was undertaken. Findings Longitudinal motor, cognitive, and imaging scores were correlated with each other in TRACK-HD participants, justifying use of a single, cross-domain measure of disease progression in both studies. The TRACK-HD and REGISTRY progression measures were correlated with each other (r=0·674), and with age at onset (TRACK-HD, r=0·315; REGISTRY, r=0·234). The meta-analysis of progression in TRACK-HD and REGISTRY gave a genome-wide significant signal (p=1·12 Ă 10â10) on chromosome 5 spanning three genes: MSH3, DHFR, and MTRNR2L2. The genes in this locus were associated with progression in TRACK-HD (MSH3 p=2·94 Ă 10â8 DHFR p=8·37 Ă 10â7 MTRNR2L2 p=2·15 Ă 10â9) and to a lesser extent in REGISTRY (MSH3 p=9·36 Ă 10â4 DHFR p=8·45 Ă 10â4 MTRNR2L2 p=1·20 Ă 10â3). The lead single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TRACK-HD (rs557874766) was genome-wide significant in the meta-analysis (p=1·58 Ă 10â8), and encodes an aminoacid change (Pro67Ala) in MSH3. In TRACK-HD, each copy of the minor allele at this SNP was associated with a 0·4 units per year (95% CI 0·16â0·66) reduction in the rate of change of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) Total Motor Score, and a reduction of 0·12 units per year (95% CI 0·06â0·18) in the rate of change of UHDRS Total Functional Capacity score. These associations remained significant after adjusting for age of onset. Interpretation The multidomain progression measure in TRACK-HD was associated with a functional variant that was genome-wide significant in our meta-analysis. The association in only 216 participants implies that the progression measure is a sensitive reflection of disease burden, that the effect size at this locus is large, or both. Knockout of Msh3 reduces somatic expansion in Huntington's disease mouse models, suggesting this mechanism as an area for future therapeutic investigation
