Intact sublimation of silicon nanocrystals evidenced via HREM imaging and EELS in a dedicated STEM
Silicon nano crystals (NCs) have attracted considerable interest for possible uses in optoelectronics 1 As the particle size decreases the properties of NCs become increasingly sensitive to the surface termination. 2, 3 Monolayer chemistries 4-10 have been exploited to control the physicochemical properties. NCs are often prepared by vapour-phase deposition techniques; using these they can be conveniently analysed via gas phase analysis techniques, such as mass spectrometry. This cannot be employed, however, if NCs are not synthesized in the gas phase. Here we present a STEM study of undecyl-capped SiNCs, evaporated intact upon heating in ultrahigh vacuum at 200°C and collected on a variety of solid substrates, including carbon-coated TEM grids. The BF- and HAADF lattice images confirm that the particles have a crystalline core with Si-lattice spacings. The presence of Si in the core is also confirmed by Si-L edge EELS, which reveals furthermore the presence of a surface oxide. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd
A note on a third order curvature invariant in static spacetimes
We consider here the third order curvature invariant
in static spacetimes
for which is conformally flat. We evaluate
explicitly the invariant for the -dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou multi
black-holes solution, confirming that does indeed vanish on the event
horizons of such black-holes. Our calculations show, however, that solely the
vanishing of is not sufficient to locate an event horizon in
non-spherically symmetric spacetimes. We discuss also some tidal effects

Tunable dipolar magnetism in high-spin molecular clusters
We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system
is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule,
with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D=-0.02K, is the magnetic
unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals whilst
preserving both spin ground-state and anisotropy. For every configuration,
molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing
interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic
behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at

Ivory Coast microtektite strewn field: description and relation to the Jaramillo geomagnetic event
During the present study the Ivory Coast microtektite layer was found in cores from five equatorial Atlantic sites, bringing the total number of Ivory Coast microtektite-bearing cores to eleven. The strewn field appears to be restricted to between 9°N and 12°S latitude. There is a general increase in the concentration of microtektites towards the Bosumtwi crater, which is generally thought to be the source of the Ivory Coast tektites. The relationship between the onset of the Jaramillo subchron and the Ivory Coast microtektite layer has been investigated in six cores. A plot of the difference in depth between the base of the Jaramillo subchron and the microtektite layer versus sediment accumulation rate was used to determine the average post-depositional remanent magnetization (PDRM) acquisition depth and the age difference between the onset of the Jaramillo subchron and the deposition of the microtektites. Assuming that the PDRM acquisition depth does not vary with sediment accumulation rate, we find that the average PDRM acquisition depth is 7 cm and that the microtektites were deposited approximately 8 ky after the onset of the Jaramillo subchron. This indicates that the impact responsible for the Ivory Coast tektites and microtektites could not be causally related to the geomagnetic reversal at the base of the Jaramillo subchron
Design, data management, and population baseline characteristics of the PERFORM magnetic resonance imaging project
Quantitative information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may substantiate clinical findings and provide additional insight into the mechanism of clinical interventions in therapeutic stroke trials. The PERFORM study is exploring the efficacy of terutroban versus aspirin for secondary prevention in patients with a history of ischemic stroke. We report on the design of an exploratory longitudinal MRI follow-up study that was performed in a subgroup of the PERFORM trial. An international multi-centre longitudinal follow-up MRI study was designed for different MR systems employing safety and efficacy readouts: new T2 lesions, new DWI lesions, whole brain volume change, hippocampal volume change, changes in tissue microstructure as depicted by mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy, vessel patency on MR angiography, and the presence of and development of new microbleeds. A total of 1,056 patients (men and women ≥55years) were included. The data analysis included 3D reformation, image registration of different contrasts, tissue segmentation, and automated lesion detection. This large international multi-centre study demonstrates how new MRI readouts can be used to provide key information on the evolution of cerebral tissue lesions and within the macrovasculature after atherothrombotic stroke in a large sample of patient
Massive Schwinger model and its confining aspects on curved space-time
Using a covariant method to regularize the composite operators, we obtain the
bosonized action of the massive Schwinger model on a classical curved
background. Using the solution of the bosonic effective action, the energy of
two static external charges with finite and large distance separation on a
static curved space-time is obtained. The confining behavior of this model is

Submerged in the mainstream? A case study of an immigrant learner in a New Zealand primary classroom
Immigrant children from diverse language backgrounds face not only linguistic challenges when enrolled in mainstream English-medium classrooms, but also difficulties adjusting to an unfamiliar learning community. The culture of primary school classrooms in New Zealand typically reflects conventions across three dimensions: interactional, instructional task performance and cognitive-academic development. All three dimensions are underpinned by the culturally specific discourse conventions involved in language socialisation. New learners may be helped by classmates or their teacher to understand and successfully use these conventions, but left on their own they may sink rather than swim. This is a case study of one Taiwanese 11-year old boy, 'John', who entered a New Zealand primary classroom midway through the school year. John's basic conversational ability was sound, but he did not possess the interactive classroom skills needed to operate in the new culture of learning. Selected from a wider study of the classroom, transcript data from audio-recorded excerpts of John's interactions over several months with his teacher and classmates are interpreted from perspectives derived from sociocultural and language socialisation theories. The article concludes with a brief consideration of the extent to which John constructed, or was constrained from constructing meaningful learning experiences, and suggestions for further research and reflection
A real-time articulatory visual feedback approach with target presentation for second language pronunciation learning
International audienceArticulatory information can support learning or remediating pronunciation of a second language (L2). This paper describes an electromagnetic articulometer-based visual-feedback approach using an articulatory target presented in real-time to facilitate L2 pronunciation learning. This approach trains learners to adjust articulatory positions to match targets for a L2 vowel estimated from productions of vowels that overlap in both L1 and L2. Training of Japanese learners for the American English vowel /ae/ that included visual training improved its pronunciation regardless of whether audio training was also included. Articulatory visual feedback is shown to be an effective method for facilitating L2 pronunciation learning
Mice with genetically altered glucocorticoid receptor expression show altered sensitivity for stress-induced depressive reactions
Altered glucocorticoid receptor (GR) signaling is a postulated mechanism for the pathogenesis of major depression. To mimic the human situation of altered GR function claimed for depression, we generated mouse strains that underexpress or overexpress GR, but maintain the regulatory genetic context controlling the GR gene. To achieve this goal, we used the following: (1) GR-heterozygous mutant mice (GR+/-) with a 50% GR gene dose reduction, and (2) mice overexpressing GR by a yeast artificial chromosome resulting in a twofold gene dose elevation. GR+/- mice exhibit normal baseline behaviors but demonstrate increased helplessness after stress exposure, a behavioral correlate of depression in mice. Similar to depressed patients, GR+/- mice have a disinhibited hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system and a pathological dexamethasone/corticotropin-releasing hormone test. Thus, they represent a murine depression model with good face and construct validity. Overexpression of GR in mice evokes reduced helplessness after stress exposure, and an enhanced HPA system feedback regulation. Therefore, they may represent a model for a stress-resistant strain. These mouse models can now be used to study biological changes underlying the pathogenesis of depressive disorders. As a first potential molecular correlate for such changes, we identified a downregulation of BDNF protein content in the hippocampus of GR+/- mice, which is in agreement with the so-called neurotrophin hypothesis of depression
Analysis of pairwise comparison matrices: an empirical research
Pairwise comparison (PC) matrices are used in multi-attribute decision problems (MADM) in order to express the preferences of the decision maker. Our research focused on testing various characteristics of PC matrices. In a controlled experiment with university students (N = 227) we have obtained 454 PC matrices. The cases have been divided into 18 subgroups according to the key factors to be analyzed. Our team conducted experiments with matrices of different size given from different types of MADM problems. Additionally, the matrix elements have been obtained by different questioning procedures differing in the order of the questions. Results are organized to answer five research questions. Three of them are directly connected to the inconsistency of a PC matrix. Various types of inconsistency indices have been applied. We have found that the type of the problem and the size of the matrix had impact on the inconsistency of the PC matrix. However, we have not found any impact of the questioning order. Incomplete PC matrices played an important role in our research. The decision makers behavioral consistency was as well analyzed in case of incomplete matrices using indicators measuring the deviation from the final order of alternatives and from the final score vector
