Measurements of scattering observables for the break-up reaction
High-precision measurements of the scattering observables such as cross
sections and analyzing powers for the proton-deuteron elastic and break-up
reactions have been performed at KVI in the last two decades and elsewhere to
investigate various aspects of the three-nucleon force (3NF) effects
simultaneously. In 2006 an experiment was performed to study these effects in
break-up reaction at 135 MeV with the detection system, Big
Instrument for Nuclear polarization Analysis, BINA. BINA covers almost the
entire kinematical phase space of the break-up reaction. The results are
interpreted with the help of state-of-the-art Faddeev calculations and are
partly presented in this contribution.Comment: Proceedings of 19th International IUPAP Conference on Few-Body

First analysis of anisotropic flow with Lee--Yang zeroes
We report on the first analysis of directed and elliptic flow with the new
method of Lee--Yang zeroes. Experimental data are presented for Ru+Ru reactions
at 1.69 AGeV measured with the FOPI detector at SIS/GSI. The results obtained
with several methods, based on the event-plane reconstruction, on Lee--Yang
zeroes, and on multi-particle cumulants (up to 5th order) applied for the first
time at SIS energies, are compared. They show conclusive evidence that
azimuthal correlations between nucleons and composite particles at this energy
are largely dominated by anisotropic flow.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C Rapid Co
Excitation function of elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions and the nuclear matter equation of state
We present measurements of the excitation function of elliptic flow at
midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at beam energies from 0.09 to 1.49 GeV per
nucleon. For the integral flow, we discuss the interplay between collective
expansion and spectator shadowing for three centrality classes. A complete
excitation function of transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow is
presented for the first time in this energy range, revealing a rapid change
with incident energy below 0.4 AGeV, followed by an almost perfect scaling at
the higher energies. The equation of state of compressed nuclear matter is
addressed through comparisons to microscopic transport model calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 4 eps figures, submitted for publication. Data files will

Determination of energy-dependent neutron backgrounds using shadow bars
Understanding the neutron background is essential for determining the neutron
yield from nuclear reactions. In the analysis presented here, the shadow bars
are placed in front of neutron detectors to determine the energy dependent
neutron background fractions. The measurement of neutron spectra with and
without shadow bars is important to determine the neutron background more
accurately. The neutron background, along with its sources and systematic
uncertainties, are explored with a focus on the impact of background models and
their dependence on neutron energy.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure
Elastic proton-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies
Observables in elastic proton-deuteron scattering are sensitive probes of the
nucleon-nucleon interaction and three-nucleon force effects. The present
experimental data base for this reaction is large, but contains a large
discrepancy between data sets for the differential cross section taken at 135
MeV/nucleon by two experimental research groups. This paper reviews the
background of this problem and presents new data taken at KVI. Differential
cross sections and analyzing powers for the and
reactions at 135 MeV/nucleon and 65 MeV/nucleon,
respectively, have been measured. The data differ significantly from previous
measurements and consistently follow the energy dependence as expected from an
interpolation of published data taken over a large range at intermediate
energies.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Proton-proton bremsstrahlung towards the elastic limit at 190 MeV incident beam energy
AbstractA series of nucleonânucleon bremsstrahlung (NNÎł) experiments at 190 MeV incident beam energy have been performed at KVI in order to gain more insight into the dynamics governing the bremsstrahlung reaction. After initial measurements wherein the bremsstrahlung process was studied far away from the elastic limit, a new study was used to probe the process nearer to the elastic limit by measuring at lower photon energies. Measured cross sections and analyzing powers are compared with the predictions of a microscopic model and those of two soft-photon models. The theoretical calculations overestimate the data by up to â30%, for some kinematics
Pionic fusion in light-ion systems
The role of pions in the nuclear interaction has been studied in pionic fusion experiments using the AGOR accelerator facility at KVI. Pionic fusion is a highly coherent process in which two nuclei fuse to a united nucleus and the available centre-of-mass (C.M.) energy is emitted through the pion channel. The examined reactions were He-4(He-3,pi(0))Be-7 and Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* and both reactions were performed at C.M. energies about 10 MeV above the coherent pion production threshold. Here, the experimental results for the Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* reaction will be presented and discussed. In order to provide sensitivity to the full dynamics and relevant processes involved in the pionic fusion reaction, almost the full angular distribution of neutral pions has been determined. In a phenomenological analysis, the contributions of Legendre polynomials to reproduce the behaviour of the angular distribution have been studied. The results of this analysis confirm the importance of the clustering correlations for the Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* reaction. The mass dependence of the pionic fusion reaction is in agreement with the results of the existing models extrapolated to this reaction. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Observation of a correlated free four-neutron system
A long-standing question in nuclear physics is whether chargeless nuclear systems can exist. To our knowledge, only neutron stars represent near-pure neutron systems, where neutrons are squeezed together by the gravitational force to very high densities. The experimental search for isolated multi-neutron systems has been an ongoing quest for several decades(1), with a particular focus on the four-neutron system called the tetraneutron, resulting in only a few indications of its existence so far(2-4), leaving the tetraneutron an elusive nuclear system for six decades. Here we report on the observation of a resonance-like structure near threshold in the four-neutron system that is consistent with a quasi-bound tetraneutron state existing for a very short time. The measured energy and width of this state provide a key benchmark for our understanding of the nuclear force. The use of an experimental approach based on a knockout reaction at large momentum transfer with a radioactive high-energy He-8 beam was key
