    Near threshold Lambda and Sigma production in pp collisions

    A model calculation for the reactions pppΛK+pp\to p\Lambda K^+ and ppNΣKpp\to N\Sigma K near their thresholds is presented. It is argued that the experimentally observed strong suppression of Σ0\Sigma^0 production compared to Λ\Lambda production at the same excess energy could be due to a destructive interference between the π\pi and KK exchange contributions in the reaction pppΣ0K+pp\to p\Sigma^0 K^+.     Partial Densities of States, Scattering Matrices, and Green's Functions

    The response of an arbitrary scattering problem to quasi-static perturbations in the scattering potential is naturally expressed in terms of a set of local partial densities of states and a set of sensitivities each associated with one element of the scattering matrix. We define the local partial densities of states and the sensitivities in terms of functional derivatives of the scattering matrix and discuss their relation to the Green's function. Certain combinations of the local partial densities of states represent the injectivity of a scattering channel into the system and the emissivity into a scattering channel. It is shown that the injectivities and emissivities are simply related to the absolute square of the scattering wave-function. We discuss also the connection of the partial densities of states and the sensitivities to characteristic times. We apply these concepts to a delta-barrier and to the local Larmor clock.Comment: 13 pages (revtex), 4 figure

    Fluctuations of the correlation dimension at metal-insulator transitions

    We investigate numerically the inverse participation ratio, P2P_2, of the 3D Anderson model and of the power-law random banded matrix (PRBM) model at criticality. We found that the variance of lnP2\ln P_2 scales with system size LL as σ2(L)=σ2()ALD2/2d\sigma^2(L)=\sigma^2(\infty)-A L^{-D_2/2d}, being D2D_2 the correlation dimension and dd the system dimension. Therefore the concept of a correlation dimension is well defined in the two models considered. The 3D Anderson transition and the PRBM transition for b=0.3b=0.3 (see the text for the definition of bb) are fairly similar with respect to all critical magnitudes studied.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, 4 eps figures, to be published in Phys.     Dimensional effects in photoelectron spectra of Ag deposits on GaAs(110) surfaces

    It is shown that the peak structure observed in angle-resolved photoelectron spectra of metallic deposits can only be unambiguously associated to single electronic states if the deposit has a two dimensional character (finite along one spatial direction). In one and zero dimensions the density of states shows peaks related to bunches of single electron states (the finer structure associated to the latter may not always be experimentally resolved). The characteristics of the peak structure strongly depend on the band dispersion in the energy region where they appear. Results for the density of states and photoemission yield for Ag crystallites on GaAs(110) are presented and compared with experimental photoelectron spectra.Comment: Uuencoded gz-compressed postcript file including text and three figures; Send comments to [email protected]

    Are there functional consequences of a reduction in selenium intake in UK subjects?

    Dietary Se levels in the UK have fallen over the last 20 years and recent surveys indicate that average Se intakes are 30-40 microg/d, which is well below the current UK reference nutrient intake for adult men (75 microg/d) or women (60 microg/d). Functional consequences of this decline have not been recognised, although epidemiological data suggest it may contribute to increased risk of infections and incidence of some cancers. Previous data have indicated that biochemical changes in Se-dependent proteins occur in otherwise healthy UK subjects given small Se supplements. The current studies have focused on the effect of small Se supplements on the immune response since there is evidence of specific interactions between Se intake and viral replication, and since the potential anti-cancer effects of Se may be mediated by non-antioxidant effects of Se such as changes in immune function. Data indicate that subjects given small Se supplements (50 or 100 microg Se/d) have changes in the activity of Se-dependent enzymes and evidence of improved immune function and clearance of an administered live attenuated virus in the form of poliovirus vaccine. Responses of individual subjects to Se supplements are variable, and current work is evaluating potential explanations for this variability, including genetic variability and pre-existing Se status
