Chirality in Bare and Passivated Gold Nanoclusters
Chiral structures have been found as the lowest-energy isomers of bare
(Au and Au_{28}(SCH_{16}_{38}(SCH_{3})_{24}) gold nanoclusters. The degree of chirality existing in
the chiral clusters was calculated using the Hausdorff chirality measure. We
found that the index of chirality is higher in the passivated clusters and
decreases with the cluster size. These results are consistent with the observed
chiroptical activity recently reported for glutahione-passivated gold
nanoclusters, and provide theoretical support for the existence of chirality in

The Second INTEGRAL AGN Catalogue
The INTEGRAL mission provides a large data set for studying the hard X-ray
properties of AGN and allows testing of the unified scheme for AGN. We present
analysis of INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI, JEM-X, and OMC data for 199 AGN supposedly
detected by INTEGRAL above 20 keV. The data analysed here allow a significant
spectral extraction on 148 objects and an optical variability study of 57 AGN.
The slopes of the hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert~2 galaxies are
found to be consistent within the uncertainties, whereas higher cut-off
energies and lower luminosities are measured for the more absorbed / type 2
AGN. The intermediate Seyfert 1.5 objects exhibit hard X-ray spectra consistent
with those of Seyfert 1. When applying a Compton reflection model, the
underlying continua appear the same in Seyfert 1 and 2 with photon index 2, and
the reflection strength is about R = 1, when assuming different inclination
angles. A significant correlation is found between the hard X-ray and optical
luminosity and the mass of the central black hole in the sense that the more
luminous objects appear to be more massive. There is also a general trend
toward the absorbed sources and type 2 AGN having lower Eddington ratios. The
black holemass appears to form a fundamental plane together with the optical
and X-ray luminosity of the form Lv being proportional to Lx^0.6 M^0.2, similar
to that found between radio luminosity Lr, Lx, and M. The unified model for
Seyfert galaxies seems to hold, showing in hard X-rays that the central engine
is the same in Seyfert 1 and 2, but seen under different inclination angles and

Elemental (im-)miscibility determines phase formation of multinary nanoparticles co-sputtered in ionic liquids
Non-equilibrium synthesis methods allow to alloy bulk-immiscible elements into multinary nanoparticles, which broadens the design space for new materials.Whereas sputtering onto solid substrates can combine immiscible elements into thin film solid solutions, this is not clear for sputtering of nanoparticles in ionicliquids. Thus, the suitability of sputtering in ionic liquids for producing nanoparticles of immiscible elements is investigated by co-sputtering the systems Au-Cu (miscible), Au-Ru and Cu-Ru (both immiscible), and Au-Cu-Ru on the surface of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Bmim][(Tf)2N]. The sputtered nanoparticles were analyzed to obtain (i) knowledge concerning the general formation process ofnanoparticles when sputtering onto ionic liquid surfaces and (ii) information, if alloy nanoparticles of immiscible elements can be synthesized as well as (iii)evidence if the Hume-Rothery rules for solid solubility are valid for sputtered nanoparticles. Accompanying atomistic simulations using density-functional theoryfor clusters of different size and ordering confirm that the miscibility of Au-Cu and the immiscibility of Au-Ru and Cu-Ru govern the thermodynamic stabilityof the nanoparticles. Morphosedimentary and phytogeography reconstruction of the middle section of the river Jarama (Madrid, Spain) during the second half of the Holocene.
[Abstract] Two sites located on the alluvial plain of the Jarama River, near Madrid, Spain, have been studied using geological, palynological and xylological techniques. Uniquely for this region, numerous wood subfossils of Alnus and Ulmus have been found together with an strobile of Pinus halepensis. This has allowed the stablishment of a coherent radiocarbon chronology, which demonstrates that these sedimentary environments began to develop during the mid Holocene. The dated sediments, which also contains appreciable amounts of pollen, have been deposited upon older palaeosols which has in turn developed directly on the geological substrate. Palynological analyses of these levels have provided valuable insights into the floristic composition of the communities associated with the different biotopes present in the area. Tracing the long bar with red-clump giants
Over the last decade a series of results have lent support to the hypothesis
of the existence of a long thin bar in the Milky Way with a half-length of 4.5
kpc and a position angle of around 45 deg. This is apparently a very different
structure from the triaxial bulge of the Galaxy.
In this paper, we analyse the stellar distribution in the inner 4 kpc of the
Galaxy to see if there is clear evidence for two triaxial or barlike
structures, or whether there is only one. By using the red-clump population as
a tracer of the structure of the inner Galaxy we determine the apparent
morphology of the inner Galaxy. Star counts from 2MASS are used to provide
additional support for this analysis.
We show that there are two very different large-scale triaxial structures
coexisting in the inner Galaxy: a long thin stellar bar constrained to the
Galactic plane (|b|<2 deg) with a position angle of 43.1 +- 1.8 deg, and a
distinct triaxial bulge that extends to at least |b|<7.5 deg with a position
angle of 12.6 +- 3.2 deg. The scale height of the bar source distribution is
around 100 pc, whereas for the bulge the value of this parameter is five times

This paper is the second part of Garzon et al. (1997: ApJ 491, L31) in which
we presented an outline of the analysis of 60 spectra from a follow-up program
to the Two Micron Galactic Survey (TMGS) project in the l=27 deg., b=0 deg.
area. In this second part, we present a more detailed explanation of the
analysis as well a library of the spectra for more complete information for
each of the 60 stars, and further discussions on the implications for the
structure of the Galaxy.
This region contains a prominent excess in the flux distribution and star
counts previously observed in several spectral ranges, notably in the TMGS.
More than 50% of the spectra of the stars detected with m_K<5.0 mag, within a
very high confidence level, correspond to stars of luminosity class I, and a
significant proportion of the remainder are very late giants which must also be
rapidly evolving. We make the case, using all the available evidence, that we
are observing a region at the nearer end of the Galactic bar, where the Scutum
spiral arm breaks away, and that this is powerful evidence for the presence of
the bar. Alternative explanations do not give nearly such a satisfactory
account of the observations.
The space localization of one and, a fortiori, of both ends of the bar allows
us to infer a position angle for the bar of around 75 deg. with respect to the
Sun-Galactic centre line. The angle is different from that given by other
authors for the bar and this, we think, is because they refer to the triaxial

El modelo v.s.p. en lechuga batavia lactuca sativa var. capitata l. y respuesta de dos variedades a las aplicaciones de compuestos orgánicos
En el Corregimiento Pavitas, municipio de La Cumbre, en la Finca Santafé, a 1.480 msnm en un suelo de la Asociación Pavas (Aeric Tropaquept) se probó el modelo vaso-sustrato-planta (VSP), en la producción de plántulas de lechuga Batavia L. sativa var. capitata y el efecto en la producción de los compuestos orgánicos, cachaza, lombricompuesto, gallinaza y bovinaza, incorporados al suelo. Los 22 tratamientos con cuatro repeticiones, repartidos en dos variedades (Great Lake 118 y Pacific) correspondieron a dosis (5, 10, 15 t/ha) de las enmiendas orgánicas aplicadas al suelo 15 días antes del trasplante y un tratamiento con el sustrato cachaza-carbonilla. El manejo de las plántulas permitió obtener excelentes resultados en cuanto a calidad, arraigo inmediato y gran uniformidad en la población. La mezcla cachaza-carbonilla superó ampliamente en rendimiento y calidad de las cabezas a los demás tratamientos. Great Lake 118 produjo el doble de lechugas que la siembra en el suelo. Entre las enmiendas orgánicas se obtuvieron muy buenos resultados con 5 t/ha de gallinaza. Great Lake 118 se comportó mejor que Pacifico Además, los tratamientos mejoraron las características químicas del suelo, especialmente el contenido de materia orgánica, potasio, fósforo, magnesio y zinc.An investigation was realized in the region of Pavitas, municipality of La Cumbre, Santa Fe farm, 1480 meters above sea level in a soil of Pavas Association (Aeric Tropaquept) to prove the plastic cup-sustrate-plant model in the production of Batavia lecttuce Lactuca sativa var. capitata, and the effects of the organic matter filter cake press, cattle manure, poultry manure and earthworm soil, incorporated in the soil. Twenty two (22) treatments and fours repetitions were applied with each of the two varieties (Great lakes 118 and Pacific), the treatments corresponded to 5, 10, 15 t/ha of the organic matter which were applied to the soil fifteen days before transplantations occured. The results showed an excellent plant vigour and quality after the transplantation. It was also observed a good plant poblation and uniformity. The sustrate filter cake press mixed with botton fly ash presented better results in the field than the other treatments, having the highest crop yield and the best quality. The Great Lakes 118 with this treatment doubled the production of the treatment with soil. With the organic sustrates, the poultry manure 5 t/ha projected better results. The work showed the good behavior of the varity Great Lakes 118 compared to the Pacific. This treatments also improved the chemical caracteristics of the soil, especially increased the organic matter, potassium, phosporus, manganesum and zinc
The long Galactic bar as seen by UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey
Over the last decade there have been a series of results supporting the
hypothesis of the existence of a long thin bar in the Milky Way with a
half-length of 4.5 kpc and a position angle of around 45 deg. This is
apparently a very different structure from the triaxial bulge of the Galaxy,
which is thicker and shorter and dominates the star counts at |l|<10 deg. In
this paper, we analyse the stellar distribution in the inner Galaxy to see if
there is clear evidence for two triaxial or bar-like structures in the Milky
Way.
By using the red-clump population as a tracer of Galactic structure, we
determine the apparent morphology of the inner Galaxy. Deeper and higher
spatial resolution NIR photometry from the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey allows
us to use in-plane data even at the innermost Galactic longitudes, a region
where the source confusion is a dominant effect that makes it impossible to use
other NIR databases such as 2MASS or TCS-CAIN. We show that results previously
obtained with using the red-clump giants are confirmed with the in-plane data
from UKIDSS GPS. There are two different structures coexisting in the inner
Galactic plane: one with a position angle of 23.60+-2.19 deg that can be traced
from the Galactic Centre up to l=10 deg (the Galactic bulge), and other with a
larger position angle of 42.44+-2.14 deg, that ends around l=28 deg (the long
