First person – Juan Garrido-Maraver

First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Biology Open, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Juan Garrido-Maraver is first author on 'Forcing contacts between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum extends lifespan in a Drosophila model of Alzheimer's disease', published in BiO. Juan conducted the research described in this article while a postdoctoral scientist in L. Miguel Martins's lab at the MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Cambridge, Leicester, UK. He is now a postdoctoral scientist in the lab of Alvaro A. Type III Secretion Effectors with Arginine N-Glycosyltransferase Activity

Type III secretion systems are used by many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens to inject proteins, known as effectors, into the cytosol of host cells. These virulence factors interfere with a diverse array of host signal transduction pathways and cellular processes. Many effectors have catalytic activities to promote post-translational modifications of host proteins. This review focuses on a family of effectors with glycosyltransferase activity that catalyze addition of N-acetyl-d-glucosamine to specific arginine residues in target proteins, leading to reduced NF-κB pathway activation and impaired host cell death. This family includes NleB from Citrobacter rodentium, NleB1 and NleB2 from enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, and SseK1, SseK2, and SseK3 from Salmonella enterica. First, we place these effectors in the general framework of the glycosyltransferase superfamily and in the particular context of the role of glycosylation in bacterial pathogenesis. Strategy and Coherence of a Program of Regional Development: A Methodology for synergy evaluation

The main purpose of this paper is to present a methodological proposal to value the synergy in programmes of regional development, regarding either their objectives or their performances. First, the main aspects of the methodology used to evaluate individually the synergy of the objectives (performances) are set out by using a Delphi technique. This technique allows to build a matrix of weights, according to the degree of synergy for every objective (performance). Then, hierarchical clusters are applied in the data processing. This technique leads to a ranking of objectives which shows the strategic value of the programme subject to evaluation. The methodological analysis shows also an application of the Community Support Framework ( 1994-1999) for the Spanish Objective 1 regions.

Linkibility between care and selfhood in §§. 39-42 of Being and Time: Heidegger and the selfhood of Dasein

Este artículo de investigación, desde los límites intrínsecos de los §§. 39-42 de la obra Ser y Tiempo, busca tematizar la mismidad del Dasein, en tanto saber de un sí-mismo no cósico que es correlato de la existencialidad y la facticidad de este ente, desde el modo de aparecer del existenciario cuidado, precisamente aquel encargado de dotar de unidad o totalidad estructural a los momentos constitutivos del ser-en-el-mundo como tal. Este análisis es ejercido con el fin de potenciar una posible vinculación entre cuidado y mismidad, donde, según parece, la mismidad se constituye como condición necesaria y suficiente del cuidado, responsable no solo de favorecer su unidad temática, sino el tránsito de la impropiedad a la propiedad existencial.From the intrinsic limits of §§. 39-42 of the work Being and Time, this research paper seeks to thematize the Selfhood of Dasein understood as a non-thingness wisdom of self, the which is correlative of the existentiality and facticity of this entity. This searching is carried out from the mode of appearing of existential Care, precisely this existential word is responsible for endowing of unit and / or structural totality to the constitutive moments of the being-in-the-world as such. This analysis also is exercised in order to enhance a possible link between Care and Selfhood, where, as it seems, the Selfhood is constituted as a neccesary and sufficient condition of Care. En este artículo se presenta el análisis de diversas perspectivas que abordan las pautas y criterios para el análisis y evaluación de materiales curriculares. Con sus aspectos diferenciales todas esas propuestas vienen a demostrar la importancia sustantiva que los materiales educativos adquieren en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje y cómo uno de los roles docentes ha de focalizarse en las competencias necesarias y suficientes para saber valorar con fundamentos estos instrumentos protagonistas de la acción pedagógica.The analysis of diverse perspectives which broad different standards and criteria of the analysis and evaluation of curricular material is exposed in this article. These proposals, with their distinguishing aspects, demonstrate the substantive importance that educational materials acquire in teaching and learning processes, and how one of the teaching roles must focus on the necessary and sufficient competences in order to know to value, with appropriate basis, these principal pedagogic action tools
