    Interference between postural control and mental task performance in patients with vestibular disorder and healthy controls

    Objectives: To determine whether interference between postural control and mental task performance in patients with balance system impairment and healthy subjects is due to general capacity limitations, motor control interference, competition for spatial processing resources, or a combination of these. Method: Postural stability was assessed in 48 patients with vestibular disorder and 24 healthy controls while they were standing with eyes closed on (a) a stable and (b) a moving platform. Mental task performance was measured by accuracy and reaction time on mental tasks, comprising high and low load, spatial and non-spatial tasks. Interference between balancing and performing mental tasks was assessed by comparing baseline (single task) levels of sway and mental task performance with levels while concurrently balancing and carrying out mental tasks. Results: As the balancing task increased in difficulty, reaction times on both low load mental tasks grew progressively longer and accuracy on both high load tasks declined in patients and controls. Postural sway was essentially unaffected by mental activity in patients and controls. Conclusions: It is unlikely that dual task interference between balancing and mental activity is due to competition for spatial processing resources, as levels of interference were similar in patients with vestibular disorder and healthy controls, and were also similar for spatial and nonspatial tasks. Moreover, the finding that accuracy declined on the high load tasks when balancing cannot be attributed to motor control interference, as no motor control processing is involved in maintaining accuracy of responses. Therefore, interference between mental activity and postural control can be attributed principally to general capacity limitations, and is hence proportional to the attentional demands of both tasks

This includes a presentation of the results of a recent survey focusing on pedagogical practices and multimedia use among ancient Mediterranean studies professionals and an overview of the benefits and challenges of incorporating rich-format media and digital resources into learner-centred curricula. The article also provides a summary of methodological approaches that can enhance learning retention and promote authentic and deep learning, with the goal of empowering students to think critically about the ancient past and their modern world

    Women, men and coronary heart disease: a review of the qualitative literature

    Aim. This paper presents a review of the qualitative literature which examines the experiences of patients with coronary heart disease. The paper also assesses whether the experiences of both female and male patients are reflected in the literature and summarizes key themes. Background. Understanding patients' experiences of their illness is important for coronary heart disease prevention and education. Qualitative methods are particularly suited to eliciting patients' detailed understandings and perceptions of illness. As much previous research has been 'gender neutral', this review pays particular attention to gender. Methods. Published papers from 60 qualitative studies were identified for the review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PREMEDLINE, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science using keywords related to coronary heart disease. Findings. Early qualitative studies of patients with coronary heart disease were conducted almost exclusively with men, and tended to generalize from 'male' experience to 'human' experience. By the late 1990s this pattern had changed, with the majority of studies including women and many being conducted with solely female samples. However, many studies that include both male and female coronary heart disease patients still do not have a specific gender focus. Key themes in the literature include interpreting symptoms and seeking help, belief about coronary 'candidates' and relationships with health professionals. The influence of social roles is important: many female patients have difficulties reconciling family responsibilities and medical advice, while male patients worry about being absent from work. Conclusions. There is a need for studies that compare the experiences of men and women. There is also an urgent need for work that takes masculinity and gender roles into account when exploring the experiences of men with coronary heart disease

    Explosion Flame Acceleration over Obstacles: Effects of Separation Distance for a Range of Scales

    The influence of obstacle separation distance on explosion flame acceleration was studied for 10% methane-air mixtures using two 20% blockage obstacles with variable number and width of bars (variable obstacle length scale) were investigated in a 162 mm diameter 4.5 m long tube with ignition on the centre of the closed end and flame propagation towards the open end. The spacing between the obstacles was varied from 0.25 m to 2.75 m. It was observed that the maximum overpressure and flame speed increased with the reduction in number of flat-bars (i.e. with increasing obstacle length scale). A maximum overpressure of 129 kPa at 2.25 m obstacle spacing was achieved with 1-flat-bar obstacles, followed by 118 kPa and 110 kPa for 2 and 4-flat-bars respectively at 1.25 m and 0.5 m obstacle separation. Turbulent to laminar burning velocity ratios downstream of the second obstacle at the optimum spacing for maximum interaction were in the range of 62-122. These are the magnitudes of flame acceleration required to explain overpressures in vapour cloud explosions in the presence of obstacles. It is worth appreciating that two obstacles of lower blockages but spaced optimally could generate higher explosion severity in terms of overpressure, flame speed and turbulence level similar to real gas explosion incidents

    Interface superconductivity in the eutectic Sr2RuO4-Ru: 3-K phase of Sr2RuO4

    The eutectic system Sr2RuO4-Ru is referred to as the 3-K phase of the spin-triplet supeconductor Sr2RuO4 because of its enhanced superconducting transition temperature Tc of ~3 K. We have investigated the field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram of the 3-K phase for fields parallel and perpendicular to the ab-plane of Sr2RuO4, using out-of-plane resistivity measurements. We have found an upturn curvature in the Hc2(T) curve for H // c, and a rather gradual temperature dependence of Hc2 close to Tc for both H // ab and H // c. We have also investigated the dependence of Hc2 on the angle between the field and the ab-plane at several temperatures. Fitting the Ginzburg-Landau effective-mass model apparently fails to reproduce the angle dependence, particularly near H // c and at low temperatures. We propose that all of these charecteric features can be explained, at least in a qualitative fashion, on the basis of a theory by Sigrist and Monien that assumes surface superconductivity with a two-component order parameter occurring at the interface between Sr2RuO4 and Ru inclusions. This provides evidence of the chiral state postulated for the 1.5-K phase by several experiments.Comment: 7 pages and 5 figs; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Extracting Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from the Time-like Pion Form-factor

    We extract the G-parity-violating branching ratio Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from the effective rho-omega mixing matrix element Pi_{rho omega}(s), determined from e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^- data. The omega->pi^+ pi^- partial width can be determined either from the time-like pion form factor or through the constraint that the mixed physical propagator D_{rho omega}^{mu nu}(s) possesses no poles. The two procedures are inequivalent in practice, and we show why the first is preferred, to find finally Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) = 1.9 +/- 0.3%.Comment: 12 pages (published version

    The UDF05 follow-up of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. I. The faint-end slope of the Lyman Break Galaxy Population at z ~ 5

    We present the UDF05 HST program, which consists of three disjoint fields—NICP12, NICP34, plus the HUDF—with deep ACS (F606W, F775W, and F850LP) and NICMOS (F110W and F160W) imaging. Here we use the ACS data for the NICP12 and HUDF fields to implement a (V − i) − (i − z) selection criterion that allows us to identify a sample of 101 (133) z ~ 5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) down to z850 = 28.5 (29.25) mag in NICP12 (HUDF). We construct the rest-frame 1400 Å LBG luminosity function (LF) over the range M1400 = [ − 21.4, − 17.1] , i.e. down to ~0.04L* at z ~ 5, and use Subaru Deep Field results (Yoshida et al. 2006) to constrain our LF at the bright end (M1400 ≄ − 22.2). We show that (1) different assumptions regarding the LBG SED distribution, dust properties, and intergalactic absorption result in a 25% variation in the number density of LBGs at z ~ 5; (2) under consistent assumptions for dust properties and intergalactic absorption, the HUDF is ~30% underdense in z ~ 5 LBGs relative to the NICP12 field, a variation which is well explained by cosmic variance; and (3) the faint-end slope of the LF does not depend on the input parameters, and has a value of α ~ − 1.6, similar to the faint-end slope of the LF of z ~ 3 and z ~ 6 LBGs. Our study therefore supports no variation in the faint end of the LBG LF over the whole redshift range z ~ 3 to z ~ 6. Based on a comparison with semianalytical models, we speculate that the z ~ 5 LBGs might have a top-heavy IMF

    A new variational approach to the stability of gravitational systems

    We consider the three dimensional gravitational Vlasov Poisson system which describes the mechanical state of a stellar system subject to its own gravity. A well-known conjecture in astrophysics is that the steady state solutions which are nonincreasing functions of their microscopic energy are nonlinearly stable by the flow. This was proved at the linear level by several authors based on the pioneering work by Antonov in 1961. Since then, standard variational techniques based on concentration compactness methods as introduced by P.-L. Lions in 1983 have led to the nonlinear stability of subclasses of stationary solutions of ground state type. In this paper, inspired by pioneering works from the physics litterature (Lynden-Bell 94, Wiechen-Ziegler-Schindler MNRAS 88, Aly MNRAS 89), we use the monotonicity of the Hamiltonian under generalized symmetric rearrangement transformations to prove that non increasing steady solutions are local minimizer of the Hamiltonian under equimeasurable constraints, and extract compactness from suitable minimizing sequences. This implies the nonlinear stability of nonincreasing anisotropic steady states under radially symmetric perturbations

    Search for Λc+→pK+π−\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^- and Ds+→K+K+π−D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^- Using Genetic Programming Event Selection

    We apply a genetic programming technique to search for the double Cabibbo suppressed decays Λc+→pK+π−\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^- and Ds+→K+K+π−D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^-. We normalize these decays to their Cabibbo favored partners and find BR(\text{BR}(\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^+ \pi^-)/BR()/\text{BR}(\Lambda_c^+ \to p K^- \pi^+)=(0.05±0.26±0.02)) = (0.05 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.02)% and BR(\text{BR}(D_s^+ \to K^+ K^+ \pi^-)/BR()/\text{BR}(D_s^+ \to K^+ K^- \pi^+)=(0.52±0.17±0.11)) = (0.52\pm 0.17\pm 0.11)% where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Expressed as 90% confidence levels (CL), we find <0.46< 0.46 % and <0.78 < 0.78% respectively. This is the first successful use of genetic programming in a high energy physics data analysis.Comment: 10 page

    Measurement of the D+ and Ds+ decays into K+K-K+

    We present the first clear observation of the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay D+ --> K-K+K+ and the first observation of the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay Ds+ --> K-K+K+. These signals have been obtained by analyzing the high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles of the FOCUS(E831) experiment at Fermilab. We measure the following relative branching ratios: Gamma(D+ --> K-K+K+)/Gamma(D+ --> K-pi+pi+) = (9.49 +/- 2.17(statistical) +/- 0.22(systematic))x10^-4 and Gamma(Ds+ --> K-K+K+)/Gamma(Ds+ --> K-K+pi+) = (8.95 +/- 2.12(statistical) +2.24(syst.) -2.31(syst.))x10^-3.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
