    Multifactor Inequality: Substitution Effects for Income Sources in Mexico

    Income is a poor indicator of welfare and should be use only as a as component of welfare. Wealth provides another dimension of well-being. We use the Kullback-Leibler Information Criterion (KLIC, hereafter) as a measure of the discrepancy between two attributes. This will allow economists and researchers to understand the kind of relationship that the attributes hold. The applications deals with an unusual analysis of income factors in which we treat them as different attributes.     Topological signature for periodic motion recognition

    In this paper, we present an algorithm that computes the topological signature for a given periodic motion sequence. Such signature consists of a vector obtained by persistent homology which captures the topological and geometric changes of the object that models the motion. Two topological signatures are compared simply by the angle between the corresponding vectors. With respect to gait recognition, we have tested our method using only the lowest fourth part of the body's silhouette. In this way, the impact of variations in the upper part of the body, which are very frequent in real scenarios, decreases considerably. We have also tested our method using other periodic motions such as running or jumping. Finally, we formally prove that our method is robust to small perturbations in the input data and does not depend on the number of periods contained in the periodic motion sequence.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1707.0698

    RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation as a tool to investigate plant miRNA processing interference by regulatory proteins of diverse origin

    Background: Due to the nature of viral RNA genomes, RNA viruses depend on many RNA-binding proteins (RBP) of viral and host origin for replication, dissemination and evasion of host RNA degradation pathways. Some viruses interfere with the microRNA (miRNA) pathway to generate better fitness. The development of an adjusted, reliable and sensitive ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay is needed to study the interaction between RBP of different origin (including viral origin) and miRNA precursors. The method could be further applied to transiently expressed heterologous proteins in different plant species. Results: Here we describe a modified RIP assay applied to nuclear epitope-tagged proteins of heterologous origin and transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. The assay includes a combination of optimized steps as well as the careful selection of control samples and rigorous data analysis. It has proven efficient to detect and quantify miRNA processing intermediates associated with regulatory proteins. Conclusions: The RIP method described here provides a reliable tool to study the interaction of RBPs, such as transiently expressed regulatory proteins with lowly represented host RNA, as is the case of miRNA precursors. This modified method was efficiently adjusted to recover nuclear proteins and reduce unspecific background. The purification scheme optimized here for GFP-tagged proteins can be applied to a wide array of RBPs. The subsequent application of next-generation sequencing technologies will permit to sequence and characterize all RNA species bound in vivo by a given RBP.Fil: Marmisollé, Facundo Ernesto.     In-situ Hydraulic Properties of Alluvial Streambeds in Three Streams in Shelby County, Tennessee, USA

    Streambed hydraulic conductivity and thickness are key parameters in determining water exchange between groundwater and surface water (GW/SW). Streambed in-situ measurements were conducted for the three streams that transverse Shelby County, Tennessee: the Wolf River, Loosahatchie River, and Nonconnah Creek. Slug tests provided estimations of horizontal hydraulic conductivity (Kr) at depths of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 m. Grain size analyses on core samples extracted to a depth of 2.7 m allowed to characterize the sediment material of the streambeds. Scour devices were designed and installed to estimate the mobile streambed thickness. The Wolf and Loosahatchie streambed sediment is characterized as relatively homogenous, composed mainly of sand with intermittent clay lenses; with (Kr) ranging from 50 to 190 m/d, and a maximum scouring depth of 40 cm and 85 cm, respectively. Nonconnah Creek has notably different characteristics with higher Kr (\u3e200 m/d) at the shallowest depth due to gravel, and an abrupt decrease with depth (\u3c1m/d) due to an extensive clay layer located at around 1 m deep; minimal to no scour was observed. The new data of this investigation provides additional constraints on GW/SW flow models

    In an effort to center the voices of Afro-Latinx college students and their Blackness, I am centering their excellence and persistence in higher education spaces. Through using the theoretical frameworks of self-authorship and “Blackimiento”, and within a critical and cultural lens, I implore that the validation and uplifting of these students is a priority for all student affairs professionals who are looking to create inclusive environments where students are encouraged to have their identities manifest holistically during their college process
