Variable stars in the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626)
We present a new search for variable stars in the Galactic globular cluster
M28 (NGC 6626). The search is based on a series of BVI images obtained with the
SMARTS Consortium's 1.3m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory,
Chile. The search was carried out using the ISIS v2.2 image subtraction
package. We find a total of 25 variable stars in the field of the cluster, 9
being new discoveries. Of the newly found variables, 1 is an ab-type RR Lyrae
star, 6 are c-type RR Lyrae, and 2 are long-period/semi-regular variables. V22,
previously classified as a type II Cepheid, appears as a bona-fide RRc in our
data. In turn, V20, previously classified as an ab-type RR Lyrae, could not be
properly phased with any reasonable period. The properties of the ab-type RR
Lyrae stars in M28 appear most consistent with an Oosterhoff-intermediate
classification, which is unusual for bona-fide Galactic globulars clusters.
However, the cluster's c-type variables do not clearly support such an
Oosterhoff type, and a hybrid Oosterhoff I/II system is accordingly another
possibility, thus raising the intriguing possibility of multiple populations
being present in M28. Coordinates, periods, and light curves in differential
fluxes are provided for all the detected variables.Comment: A&A, in pres
ALMA observations of the Red Rectangle, a preliminary analysis
We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB
objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary
nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously.
We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and
12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary
object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date.
These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex
structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find
a low-velocity outflow that occupies more or less the region placed between the
disk and the optical X-shaped nebula. From our observations and preliminary
modeling of the data, we confirm the previously known properties of the disk
and obtain a first description of the structure, dynamics, and physical
conditions of the outflow.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Effect of Strain on Interactions of Σ3{111} Silicon Grain Boundary with Oxygen Impurities from First Principles
The interaction of grain boundaries (GBs) with inherent defects and/or impurity elements in multicrystalline silicon plays a decisive role in their electrical behavior. Strain, depending on the types of GBs and defects, plays an important role in these systems. Herein, the correlation between the structural and electronic properties of Σ3{111} Si-GB in the presence of interstitial oxygen impurities is studied from the first-principles framework, considering the global and local model of strain. It is observed that the distribution of strain along with the number of impurity atoms modifies the energetics of the material. However, the electronic properties of the considered Si-GBs are not particularly affected by the strain and by the oxygen impurities, unless a very high local distortion induces additional structural defects
The VVV Survey RR Lyrae Population in the Galactic Center Region

A large sample of 960 RR Lyrae of type ab (RRab) stars were discovered. A catalog is presented featuring the positions, magnitudes, colors, periods, and amplitudes for the sample, in addition to estimated reddenings, distances, and metallicities, and measured individual relative proper motions. We use the reddening-corrected Wesenheit magnitudes, defined as WKs Ks 0.428 J Ks = - ( - ), in order to isolate bona fide RRL belonging to the Galaxy Center, finding that 30 RRab are foreground/background objects. We measure a range of extinctions from AKs 0.19 = to 1.75 mag for the RRab in this region, finding that large extinction is the main cause of the sample incompleteness. The mean period is P =0.5446±0.0025 days, yielding a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] =-1.30±0.01 (ς = 0.33) dex for the RRab sample in the Galactic Center region. The median distance for the sample is D =8.05±0.02 kpc. We measure the RRab surface density using the less reddened region sampled here, finding a density of 1000 RRab/sq deg at a projected Galactocentric distance RG =1.6 deg. Under simple assumptions, this implies a large total mass (M>109Me) for the old and metal-poor population contained inside RG. We also measure accurate relative proper motions, from which we derive tangential velocity dispersions of ςVl =125.0 and ςVb =124.1 km s-1 along the Galactic longitude and latitude coordinates, respectively. The fact that these quantities are similar indicate that the bulk rotation of the RRab population is negligible, and implies that this population is supported by velocity dispersion. In summary, there are two main conclusions of this study. First, the population as a whole is no different from the outer bulge RRab, predominantly a metal-poor component that is shifted with respect to the Oosterhoff type I population defined by the globular clusters in the halo. Second, the RRab sample, as representative of the old and metal-poor stellar population in the region, has high velocity dispersions and zero rotation, suggesting a formation via dissipational collapse. ©2018. Peru-China international trade and its effect on inclusive economic growth in Peru 2000-2019
From 2000 to 2019, trade between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Peru grew at an average annual rate of 22%, however, income and wealth inequality in Peru remained the same. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of trade between Peru and China on the inclusive economic growth of Peru from 2000 to 2019. The method used was the correlation of variables, and a linear regression between Peru and China trade and several indicators of inclusive economic growth in the Peruvian economy was performed using the Ordinary Least Squares model. The results suggest that there is sufficient statistical evidence to support that inclusive economic growth may depend on increased trade between Peru and China; the study show that if trade growth between Peru and China fluctuates by 10.3 per capita in the Economically Active Population (EAP). Moreover, for every 1% increase in trade between Peru and China, GDP per capita increases by 0.1057% and labor productivity increases by 0.0681740%. The variables poverty, vulnerable employment, GINI index and life expectancy at birth were not significant factors
Echelle long-slit optical spectroscopy of evolved stars
We present echelle long-slit optical spectra of a sample of objects evolving
off the AGB, most of them in the pre-planetary nebula (pPN) phase, obtained
with the ESI and MIKE spectrographs at Keck-II and Magellan-I, respectively.
The total wavelength range covered with ESI (MIKE) is ~3900 to 10900 A (~3600
to 7200A). In this paper, we focus our analysis mainly on the Halpha profiles.
Prominent Halpha emission is detected in half of the objects, most of which
show broad Halpha wings (up to ~4000 km/s). In the majority of the
Halpha-emission sources, fast, post-AGB winds are revealed by P-Cygni profiles.
In ~37% of the objects Halpha is observed in absorption. In almost all cases,
the absorption profile is partially filled with emission, leading to complex,
structured profiles that are interpreted as an indication of incipient post-AGB
mass-loss. All sources in which Halpha is seen mainly in absorption have F-G
type central stars, whereas sources with intense Halpha emission span a larger
range of spectral types from O to G. Shocks may be an important excitation
agent of the close stellar surroundings for objects with late type central
stars. Sources with pure emission or P Cygni Halpha profiles have larger J-K
color excess than objects with Halpha mainly in absorption, which suggests the
presence of warm dust near the star in the former. The two classes of profile
sources also segregate in the IRAS color-color diagram in a way that intense
Halpha-emitters have dust grains with a larger range of temperatures.

Epidemiología de las fracturas de la extremidad proximal del fémur en asturias
Hemos realizado un estudio epidemiológico de las fracturas de fémur proximal
en personas mayores de 50 años, atendidas en nuestro Hospital durante los años 1990-92.
Se valoraron un total de 355 casos. En el período estudiado se observó que las fracturas más
numerosas fueron la cervicales, no encontrando diferencias significativas en los ingresos según
el período estacional. La edad media de presentación fue de 81 años. La tasa de incidencia
fue muy semejante a las otras provincias españolas y menor que la encontrada en los países
del Norte de Europa, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos.We have performed an epidemiologic study on the incidence of proximal femoral
fractures in patients older than 50 years, all reviewed in our Hospital from 1990 to 1992.
We included 355 patients. Femoral neek fractures were the most frequent lesions. No significant
differences in the hospital admissions were found during all the year's seasons. The mean
age of presentation was 81 years. The incidence rate was similar to the rest of Spain, and less
than in North Europe, England and United States
Mechanical, antibacterial and bond strength properties of nano-titanium-enriched glass ionomer cement
The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has become a significant area of research in Dentistry. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the physical, antibacterial activity and bond strength properties of conventional base, core build and restorative of glass ionomer cement (GIC) compared to GIC supplemented with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowder at 3% and 5% (w/w). Material and Methods Vickers microhardness was estimated with diamond indenter. Compressive and flexural strengths were analyzed in a universal testing machine. Specimens were bonded to enamel and dentine, and tested for shear bond strength in a universal testing machine. Specimens were incubated with S. mutans suspension for evaluating antibacterial activity. Surface analysis of restorative conventional and modified GIC was performed with SEM and EDS. The analyses were carried out with Kolmogorov-Smirnov, ANOVA (post-hoc), Tukey test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann Whitney. Results Conventional GIC and GIC modified with TiO2 nanopowder for the base/liner cement and core build showed no differences for mechanical, antibacterial, and shear bond properties (p>0.05). In contrast, the supplementation of TiO2 NPs to restorative GIC significantly improved Vickers microhardness (p<0.05), flexural and compressive strength (p<0.05), and antibacterial activity (p<0.001), without interfering with adhesion to enamel and dentin. Conclusion GIC supplemented with TiO2 NPs (FX-II) is a promising material for restoration because of its potential antibacterial activity and durable restoration to withstand the mastication force
