Dream Come True or True Nightmare? The Effect of Creating Educational Opportunity for Undocumented Youth

    Get PDF
This Comment analyzes the Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors ( DREAM ) Act, which is proposed legislation that provides undocumented immigrant youth an opportunity to achieve higher education and legal status. Part I of this Comment describes the legislative history, specific provisions, and need for the DREAM Act. Part II demonstrates how state laws are insufficient to overcome some of the barriers that undocumented youth face in attempting to achieve higher education, and how the DREAM Act will help overcome those barriers. Part III of this Comment recommends that Congress should seriously consider the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the special needs of undocumented children upon assessing the DREAM Act in the 109th Congress. Part IV demonstrates that the DREAM Act does not encourage illegal immigration, it is not too costly to implement, it rewards hard work, and its passage will benefit society as a whole

The use of Twitter on fashion brands. A comparison between luxury and low-cost brands

In this paper, we made a comparative analysis about the dialogical capacity of luxury fashion brands and low-cost brands in the social network Twitter. For this, we used a quantitative methodology and conducted a content analysis of 1,135 tweets published by H&M, Zara, Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss. We observed that there is no consensus among brands to address their audiences, and while low-cost brands make the greatest effort to maintain a dialogue, luxury brands receive more interactions.Ciencias de la Comunicació

Enhanced CO2 Methanation by New Microstructured Reactor Concept and Design

    Get PDF
A novel multichannel minireactor with channel internal diameter in the range of millimeters has been conceptually designed and constructed. Its configuration confers to the new concept reactor some features and advantages compared to conventional fixed-bed reactors g.e. better mass-transfer, avoid hot-spots formation, increased performance (10–20%). Consequently, this new reactor concept is ideal to be applied to exothermic reactions such as the Sabatier reaction that demands continuous removal of the heat produced to avoid hot-spot formation and the sintering of the catalyst. Thanks to its configuration, this reactor could control effectively the heat generated by the reaction and several tests were carried out to validate the reactor features. The results obtained demonstrate that the catalysts activity in the reaction is improved with the application of the novel reactor respect the conventional fixed- and fluidized-bed ones and neither catalyst sintering, nor pressure drop was appreciated during the catalytic tests. At the best reaction conditions, Tecnalia’s multichannel minireactor can handle 820 Nm3/h of CO2 per square meter of channel section showing the enormous potential of the new reactor concept. The authors gratefully acknowledge the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) funding under the project RENOVAGAS (RTC-2014-2975-3). Genes of different catabolic pathways are coordinately regulated by Dal81 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Yeast can use a wide variety of nitrogen compounds. However, the ability to synthesize enzymes and permeases for catabolism of poor nitrogen sources is limited in the presence of a rich one. This general mechanism of transcriptional control is called nitrogen catabolite repression. Poor nitrogen sources, such as leucine, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and allantoin, enable growth after the synthesis of pathway-specific catabolic enzymes and permeases. This synthesis occurs only under conditions of nitrogen limitation and in the presence of a pathway-specific signal. In this work we studied the temporal order in the induction of AGP1, BAP2, UGA4, and DAL7, genes that are involved in the catabolism and use of leucine, GABA, and allantoin, three poor nitrogen sources. We found that when these amino acids are available, cells will express AGP1 and BAP2 in the first place, then DAL7, and at last UGA4. Dal81, a general positive regulator of genes involved in nitrogen utilization related to the metabolisms of GABA, leucine, and allantoin, plays a central role in this coordinated regulation.Fil: Palavecino Ruiz, Marcos Daniel. (2011). Redescubriendo a Joanna Quinn. POTENTIAL GAINS FROM COOPERATION FOR VESSELS AND COUNTRIES

    Get PDF
In this paper, we consider a model in which fishing boats or firms share the stock of fish in a fishing ground. The catches made by each firm reduce the stock available for the rest of the firms, which directly affects their profits. We aim to quantify in a static framework the gain in welfare obtained by the firms if they decide to cooperate in order to attain an individually rational efficient outcome. One of the main results is that, both the incentives for the firms to cooperate and the minimum level of catches which permits any gain in welfare decrease as real wage increases. On the other hand, the greater the asymmetry among boats of firms, the more difficult it will be to reach any cooperative agreement.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Carbon capture and storage:Making fossil fuels great again?

    Get PDF
At present, Carbon Capture and Storage, in which CO2 is captured from flue gasses and stored in geological formations, is one of the technologies to reduce CO2 emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels. Are there some good arguments to continue to invest in fossil fuels, a technology of yesterday
